So what's the best way to feed this back to Apple? I also had DnD on 24/7 with only favourites allowed through, it was perfect. Screen not needlessly pinging on and off in your pocket all day but could catch up on everything when you checked. Now notifications just disappear into the abyss if your phone's unlocked, can't even receive calls!

Edit: I've managed to roll back to 14.8, but had to use an old backup from last week. Not sure why there were none newer than that but at least DnD works again.

They did carry over what was already setup for DND, either. I had to go through and select those notifications I had defined previously after the update. Didn't know this until notifications began coming through after I had gone to bed. Very frustrating!
Worked this out last night when I started seeing notifications come through on my watch when DND is supposed to be activated on all my devices. Then I checked my phone and it was notifications galore!

This has got to be the most ridiculous thread I have ever read.

Literally everybody complaining over a feature that they think is used by everybody just because it's used themselves.

I myself have never used DND like the way it's described in this article or comments, does that mean everybody uses it like me? No, so why the hell does there have to be an uprising about this?

Also... I gotta ask, how in the world does this usage make any sense?! You want to be in DND when it's locked, but then you unlock your phone and get notifications and then lock again and go back to DND? How often are you on your device between locks that you require this feature? If you are on your phone for seconds between locks this doesn't make any sense to me. If you are on your phone a lot, how can a swipe to control centre and a tap be so insane to toggle off DND that it breaks you as a person?

I understand that if someone has a use case and that is removed that it is upsetting, but you also have the option to not update your device. You even have the option now to roll back
I've never used it like it's described in the article but it didn't even carry over my settings from iOS 14. It basically never kicked in last night when it was supposed to so I carried on getting messages and notifications when I didn't want to.

what a croc of bologna! why would they remove this? I used it every night.

Not the only thing they got rid of…Siri’s volume is no longer adjustable in Maps while playing media (podcasts, music, etc.). Its only setting is LOUDLY overriding the media while giving a direction. Discovered this rather unpleasantly on a ride with my brother this morning. His phone is still on iOS 14 and we ended up just using his for directions. Really genuinely disappointing regression.
Were you connected to CarPlay or just using navigation on your phone screen? I’ll be quite annoyed if I’m unable to adjust the GPS voice guidance and music media volumes separately. My car does have them under settings to adjust them, which is separate from the CarPlay settings, so maybe it will not be an issue. I’m still on 14.8, staying on it for a while I think.

My phone is set to silent and no vibration, but not DND because I need to see iMessages and texts. My iPad Pro is on DND and low brightness when not in use just to prevent disturbance and battery wastage.

My iMac, however, rings through all the unsolicited calls, because I want to still see iMessage notifications. It irritates, interrupts, and often startles me when these calls come in.

Advertising and scammers have ruined EVERY medium & communication device. If I could remove one feature from my *phone* it would, be *receiving incoming phone calls*.

Screw the advertising industry!!!

I am legitimately curious what the actual use case for this setting would have been as I really don't get it despite trying to wrap my head around this for the last 15 minutes or so it took me to read all the comments hoping for an explanation.

Anyone care to enlighten me? 🤷‍♂️

Previously: I left DND on all the time because when my phone was not being used, I didn't about being alerted to every single notification the second it arrived. I just check my phone often enough and can see the notifications whenever. If I was actively using my phone, DND would still allow for alerts though, so if I'm in Safari and a message notification appeared, I got the banner or vibration or whatever. My phone was in this state 100% of the time, partially because I don't care about getting notifications ASAP, and partially because a majority of apps that I even get notifications from also have PC equivalents and I see those instantly while on my laptop.

Currently: DND silences all notifications, even while using the device, so in the above example, I could be using Safari and get a message from another app but not see the notification at all unless I went back to the homescreen and saw the badge icon. You can add a list of apps to be exempt from this, but they just sent notifications as normal, so again the above example, when the device is off and on my desk, I'll be alerted to every notification.

There are other use cases but that's mine. It might sound odd if you're one who wants notifications as they come in (this is probably most people to be fair), but if you only care about notifications when using the device, it was pretty convenient.

You will find all your notifications in notIfication center if you learn to use focus.
What is your problem? We all know how Focus Mode works. The article is explaining that an option to only mute notifications when locked was an option in iOS 14 and isn't anymore in iOS 15. You can explain all the features available in Focus Mode all you want, but this option simply isn't there anymore.

It's easy: when my phone is next to me on my desk I'm not annoyed with notifications (because I'm not using it), but I can see the notifications I missed by simply tapping the screen twice. When I am using the phone, I am using the phone so I do want to see the notifications. This was a simple option in iOS 14 DND that they removed.

I am confused. Which focus mode is the right one at night?. Sleep or DND?. I have a wake up alarm in my iPhone, should I use the Sleep focus over DND?. Which one is default at night for not disturbing as in IOS 14?. So complicated?, so many options that I feel like I must use them all at some times.

Thank you for explaining. Never in my life would I have thought about using DND to achieve what you have described. In fact, I have been doing the exact same thing for many years now without DND by simply flipping my phone face down over if I want it to leave me alone. Admittedly, it may not be as fancy a solution as DND but the result is the same: I don't get distracted by notifications. I find that to be a much simpler solution because once I do want to see my notifications again all I have to do is flip it back over.

You're right, except now your screen is pinging on & off all day draining your battery. Whether it's in your pocket, car glovebox, face down etc. it's a waste of energy.

I'm happy enough rolling back to 14.8 for now, hope they fix this soon.

i'm also noticing that when in 'dnd' the notifications are hidden from the lock screen, the used to just quietly be there for me when i would pick up my phone. now i need to swipe up for that. i'm more likely to wake up that way. :(

any way around this?

Purely on my phone; don’t have CarPlay. Not sure how things are gonna look on there, but for now, this is how it is on phones: Siri always speaks (read: yells), Siri only gives critical directions (not really sure what the criteria is for that?), and Siri never speaks.

Maybe Apple is attempting to “force” people into CarPlay, but given you either need to get your dashboard replaced, or…buy a new car (one that supports CarPlay at that), that’s pretty hard to force anyone into.

This just desperately needs to be fixed in 15.1. It is a full-on REGRESSION. (Apple devotees will surely understand my insistence on using this term.)

Thanks for replying. That was how things use to be for me too, had an older car, so I used my phone screen for navigation. Didn’t use Apple Maps often, mostly Waze or Google. The volume was the same level for navigation and music. My newer car supports CarPlay. The system has completely separate audio settings that allow me to set the volume for both. Or just adjust it while each is speaking or playing. Having Siri scream directions would be very annoying LOL

I am still on iOS 14.8, waiting for Apple to push out incrementally updates before I upgrade to 15. I learned that lesson long ago, even before the disaster that was 13.

In the Do Not Disturb options screen in Settings app, tap Lock Screen, then turn on Show On Lock Screen. I think that's what you're looking for.

I actually found a way around it, it’s super annoying and unnecessary, but you have to first for example if you want text messages to pop up while unlocked. You have to add the iMessage app to your focus, then from there go to your notification settings for iMessage, then turn off your sound for the app, and turn off Lock Screen notifications. Then if your phone is locked you won’t get notifications but when it’s unlocked you will still see them but never hear them. Like I said it sucks but you can fix it, just repeat for all the other apps you’d like notifications for :(

They also got rid of “deliver quietly” option after you’d long press a notification in the Notification Center. Very annoying.
If you swipe the notification to the left, click on options and select “mute for 1 hour/today”. Just found it, I wish Apple did a little explanation as to where the “deliver quietly” feature moved.

Got tired of that link. Apple is like a corrupt politician and only pays attention when there is enough media noise. Like the CSAM affair or the antenna gate or the bend-gate or the tab bar in Safari 15 and several other cases.
Not quite true.

I can’t remember what issue it was that I reported a few years ago, but it certainly was fixed in a later release of the software. It was something in Mail on the Mac.

And I’m 100% certain that it was never in the media.
