If I'm not mistaken, developer account is $99 US per year?

Does it auto renew?

I'm not a developer, any other benefits apart from being able to jump on the betas straight away?

It does Autorenew and probably not much benefit other than early downloads unless you want to participate in developer forums, have access to Xcode, that sort of thing.

Just a quick heads-up for non-US folks: Daylight Saving Time just kicked in on Sunday morning, so Apple is now operating on Pacific Daylight Time (UTC - 7) ā€” for some of you, releases will be one hour earlier than you're used to.

Cheers mate, public beta route has been working well for me, haven't bricked a device yet. ?

I'll wait and see what apple has been cooking up for iOS 16 come WWDC, might sign up after WWDC.

The developer membership is also required to test and distribute apps on devices ā€” the developer certificates required to run an app on anything but the simulator can only be generated by users with a paid membership.

In my opinion, paying $100 to just get developer betas is a bit excessive for its purpose, but Iā€™m not one to tell someone off about buying in excess.

Some of the developer betas for new OS versions tend to be bare bones. They normally wonā€™t brick your phone, but theyā€™ll knock out some semi-critical items (like early iOS 13 betas and doing something weird to the dealer and iMessage app). Thatā€™s why the first betas normally come with a notice that they shouldnā€™t be deployed on any phone under than for the purpose of testing their current apps on initial OS proposed platform. Just keep this in mind if you decide to move forward.

Thatā€™s really the only time when itā€™s a distinct benefit. You get the developer preview a good three weeks before the public beta comes out.

But, as noted, that does have some potential downsides. iOS 13 was awful for me early on for navigation. Neither google nor Apple Maps could keep a GPS fix. Per the device, I was doing some serious cross country driving (including being submerged) when in fact I was in an interstate Highway minding my own business.

As to bricking your device, you have equal odds of doing it on the public and the developer betas since they are the same software 99.999% of the time.

I know the risk of jumping on early, holding off for now, doubt weā€™ll get anything groundbreaking once WWDC rolls around.

Plus Iā€™ve given apple enough money recently. ?

Shhh, some of us havenā€™t seen it yet. ??

MJ has spidey on a tight leash.

Doesnā€™t give anything anyway. Donā€™t worry. It was just a general feeling around spidey these days. We need a dark, gritty, hard version to be made now. Proper kick ass, awesome gadgets, great fight scenes, strong story lineā€¦ this wet, always moaning and crying spidey does nothing for me, personally. Tom Hardey gone twisted and bad as Venom taking out his rage on NYC.

Anywayā€¦ feelings are mixed to seeing iOS 15.5 b1 this week I see. Personally, LOVING, 15.4. Performance, battery and experience is snappy, steady and happy.

Hopefully we donā€™t go backwards with 15.5.

15.4 is smoother than the bangers and mashed potatoes I had for dinner tonight. ?

Dare I say it, ProMotion 2.0 is off the hook. ?

If only google would fix this stupid YouTube app. ?ā€ā™‚ļø Having buffering issues, ruled out my WiFi as being the problem, itā€™s also happening on 4G.

Not having these buffering issues on my Mac, only iPhone and iPad.

I have a theory: the Apple event was supposed to have occurred later in March but for some reason was accelerated to March 8. Consequently, 15.4 also was accelerated to meet the release dates of the new devices.

Think about it: doesnā€™t March 8th seem earlier than normal for a Spring event?* Didnā€™t the 15.4 beta period feel a bit more rushed than normal?

If this is accurate, then I am going to hazard a guess that we wonā€™t be seeing 15.5 for a week or more.

Or weā€™ll see it at 1pm today.

*Per Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Apple_Inc._media_events), this is the earliest event since the March event in 2015 (which was held on March 9). The only earlier event was March 2, 2011, where the iPad 2 was announced by a terminally ill Steve Jobs.

Considering we're still about 3 months from seeing iOS 16 b1 and we still have yet to see the Drivers License in Wallet features, I'd speculate that not only do we see 15.5, but maybe even a 15.6 for when WWDC2022 rolls around. Betas tend to go on for about 1Ā½ months at most? I'm sure there might be a few 15.x.x point updates mixed in, but does a 3 month beta period for 15.5 sound realistic?

I already said it before, apple has already broken the taboo of having many subversions within the current iOS, so I think we can easily reach iOS 15.6 or 15.7 without problems, I don't see them using iOS 15.5 in beta for so long.
