Why would we need iOS 14.8 if 15 is just over a month away? ?
Apple's already announced that they're going to continue supporting iOS 14 with Security & Bug Fixes while iOS 15 is out. So, they're going to need a new point release to follow through with that if/when there is a bug fix or security update needed...

I see a bunch of "Security Update 2022-001 for iOS 14.7.1"-style updates in our future...

Why not just continue adding incremental updates after 14.7.1, like 14.7.2, 14.7.3, etc.?

Maybe the new GPUs they announced for the mac pros? ?

Not getting my hopes up for anything exciting. ??

Because Apple abides to the rules of semantic versioning. New features, breaking SDK changes or kernel upgrades push the minor version. Patch level updates shouldn‘t change or add functionality, only fix existing things.
