I hardly make phone calls and I would be happy if I could uninstall the phone app 😉😂
Seriously — me too. It may be called a “phone,” but we are way past the point of looking at it as a “phone.” The “phone” component is just another app, and most certainly not the most used app. I guarantee you TikTok gets more use for millions of people than the phone app. Maybe it should just be called a TikTok-Block.

Is anyone getting occasional random restarts during use? It’s happened both on 17.0.3 and just now on 17.1 beta 3

I’ll be using my 15pm something like safari let’s say and then the touchscreen starts to be unresponsive. I may be able to go out of safari and force close it then restart but it’ll still be unresponsive and then a minute later the screen shuts off and I get a springboard reset. Blank screen, Apple logo, back to lockscreen.

Has happened maybe half a dozen times at least this past week. Few times with safari just now with Netflix.

I have done one software reinstall through my Mac but I did still restore from a backup. Not sure if I want to start from a clean device or if this is a bug others are experiencing. Or maybe something just with my phone

I have a 15PM on 17.0.3 and I am not experiencing that. But I did with the 14PM at some point, and it was an app that was a defective local database. Whenever I would run it, I would get a restart after about 5 minutes.

Try to see if you're using any specific app in the 5 minutes previous to the restart. That might be the culprit.

Still running fabulously on third-gen SE. No random nocturnal shutdowns and no random restarts in use. There is, however, a rather annoying initial keyboard input delay when typing which really shouldn’t be there (don’t remember such a thing on my 13 mini or on any other model, for that matter) so hopefully that gets remedied soon.

weather and calendar floating widgets are still blanks. sometimes the calling disrupts the phone call automatically.

so it's happened mostly with safari and once with netflix just before i made the post. if there's a local corrupt database etc. what do you suggest i do, uninstall the app and reinstall?

They did something with iOS17 - the music is not as loud as before. I usually listen at 75% to 80% volume but now I listen at 100% both on Apple Music and Youtube Music. It seems fine as before with iPadOS 17. Is this fixed in this beta? 🥺

Your hearing got worse after listening at that high volume that you now need to listen at 100% for the same result?

Without joking: see if Sound Check is enabled, if yes, turn it off..

I would do the following:

  • delete Netflix
  • clear the Safari cache (Settings -> Safari -> clear website history and data)
  • reboot the iPhone
  • reinstall Netflix

Just followed your steps thanks for the clear instructions.

Hopefully that resolves it!

Can any of you on iOS 17.1 beta clarify whether the bug where the Phone and/or Contacts app takes up a large amount of space has been fixed?

After I have added Call Posters to my contacts (iOS 17.0.3), the phone app takes up 2.3GB at the time of writing. The problem is every time I open a contact in the phone app, the memory usage increases.

The call posters I have assigned to several of my contacts take up a total of 10MB - so it is not because I have transferred "4K high resolution, pro" pictures which take up 100MB per piece.

I can read on Reddit that several people are experiencing this problem. Some find, like me, that it is the Phone app that takes up a lot of space, others find that it is the Contact app.

BTW. I don't experience any problems on iPadOS, which is probably because iPadOS doesn't support Call Posters yet.

I also made a thread about it here:

Have just tried creating several contact posters, because I don’t use this feature. It looks like the issue is still present. At the same time I’m not really sure, if we can consider it as the issue, maybe it’s supposed to take some space

Thanks for checking it, and unfortunately the Phone app still behaves like this in iOS 17.1.

I'm almost certain it's a bug. The phone app takes up (as I remember) 10-20MB normally? If I then add Contact Posters, in my case the pictures that I have added take up a total of 10MB, then the Phone app with content should take up 30-40MB - how can it be 2.3GB? Do you have an idea?

My phone app uses 4MB of space, with contact posters off (I hope—useless/annoying feature IMO).

Agree with you. I have no idea, honestly

I am sure it is a bug. I have contact posters (two) and my phone app is 25.3 MB in size.

Okay 4MB sounds about right. The phone app takes up almost nothing normally. This also confirms to me that it is the Contact Posters that cause the problem. Calculation is not my greatest strength, but if the app takes up 4MB and I add 32 images which take up a total of 10MB, then it can never be 2.3GB. I have always had contact pictures on all my contacts, but after iOS 17, all the pictures have been upscaled to full screen, so it looks completely wrong when I receive a call. That's why I start using Contact Posters so that I can see the real picture, in a smaller size, when I receive a call. First world problems, I know. But agree - the function is annoying, It was better before.

@17fox
Nor do I. I hope Apple realizes this. It's a bit of a shame to use all 128GB just to display a funny picture when you receive a call.

@gwhizkids
Try closing the Settings app completely. Then try going into the Phone app and open the contacts that have Contact Poster - try opening and closing several times. Then try going back to Settings / General / iPhone Storage and check - if you have the same problem as me, the Phone app should start taking up more space.

128 GB could actually be more or less okay. Imagine people with 64 gigs phones. It’s crazy 🥲

Those with a 64GB iPhone have to choose between one call poster, or one -insert a long movie in the highest quality-, if it continues like this. Think Different, well that's what you need now.

Not really. Only went up to 27.3 MB.
