When Tim Cook say 29 hour playback battery life what does he really mean?

Most probably this (for iPhone 14 Pro):

So, basically, your advice would be not to install any software updates, missing on all the new features, bug fixes and security updates? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I would rather plug my iPhone in every now and again…

So, basically, your advice would be to strawman posts you disagree with and imply disingenuously that people are prescribing advice instead of simply making observations?

I've owned a launch day 12Pro, 13PM and when I traded them up they always would be at 99% or 98% battery health

I have had my 14Pro since December and it's already at 92%

I suspect it means: 1) A brand new phone, 2) Turning off everything on it besides the 1 app you use to say listen to you audio on device. No Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no cell service, no always on display, everything off other than that one on device app. I would bet you could get those numbers or better, but you’d have to totally gimp your iPhone. 😉

Reflecting back on the battery life of an iPhone.

Regarding the video: Running a beta on your iPhone means that Apple is constantly running background processes (Running your battery down) and turning off the always on display on your iPhones and Apple Watches really help to extend battery life (Do you honestly need them, especially if you have an Apple Watch?). Sure it may be less fun, but for me knowing my battery will be there for me when I need it is more important/less stressful. 🤷

My battery health drained from 87% to 81% since beta 1, and it's been stuck on 81% for a couple weeks. They don't want me to get a free battery replacement lol

My launch day 14 Pro Max is still at 100% battery health. My 13 Pro Max was down to 85% by the same time last year. I could only put this down to three potential things: 1. I only went into the iOS beta at DB4 this year so the rough bits had been tested out (I thank you for your service!), 2. I switched from wireless to MagSafe charging - which controls the heat and manages the charge, 3. There’s a mix of good and bad batteries and I was just lucky this time.
I suspect it’s #3 and we obsess about things we can’t fix. I’d imagine the majority of people on these forums update their phones so regularly it doesn’t matter. I’d just budget for a battery replacement if I was on a longer upgrade cycle.

Forgot to mention that optimized battery charging never worked a single time for me during beta 3, while it was fine during beta 1 and 2.

Looking forward to the new beta this week.
Optimized battery charging finally started working again on the first night on beta 5. It never worked under betas 3 and 4.

Any reports on battery usage of beta 5 on a 14 Pro Max? I'm tempted to jump the gun but I wonder how battery life is by now. How many hours are you getting out of it? And how much worse is it than 16.6?

Battery usage on any beta will always be much worse than the release software. On a beta Apple is running lots of background processes that are removed when it’s released to the public. 👍🏻

It sucks. I don’t know why I punish myself installing these betas

I did public betas for 5 years for FOMO, but doing all the reporting is a lot of work. That and putting up with features not working, battery drain, I finally stopped. I’m now happy to wait for the public release software, which I install right away. It suits me at this point in my life. 😉

I am well aware of that. The thing is, I was on the iOS 16 betas and they were really great, as far as battery usage is concerned. I am asking because I'm hearing reports that iOS 17 betas seem to be much worse than other betas.

A bit of additional usage because of logging and background processes is expected. A massive impact (as in "I can't reach the end of the day with a single charge on a Pro Max") is quite unheard of in betas before iOS 17.

I’m guessing that all the new features (which are a lot for an iPhone software update) is the difference between betas for iOS 17 vs 16… 😉

How could possibly remember the battery usage of betas you ran a year ago for sure?
Anytime someone throws a hyperbole I just assume they’ve forgotten the bad stuff and paint a picture rosier than it was. Not unless you have your experiences journaled.

Down to 91% health here on my 14 pro. Dev beta 5. 30 minutes on screen time dropped my battery 30% so far this morning. Getting rough but only a month and change to upgrade.
