for me, it should be closer, but so many years of muscle memory still confuses me
I now realise what the fuss is about, Apple has completely changed the phone interface when you're on a call, and has placed the hang up button on the right.

Hopefully Apple revises this before the final release, a lot of people don't seem terribly happy about it - alternatively, hopefully we all get used to it and it's no big deal. :)

What would you say if I told you that the first 16 beta was better than the last 16.6 beta that I was on? 🤣
Well that would be a worry. I don't use the beta versions after the .0 has been released. You do have to wonder why the beta of 16.6 would be so unstable compared with 16.5, or even the initial 16.0 beta.

Aren't the changes meant to be relatively minor between point releases? Clearly not, depending on what new features are being delivered in that point release.

Maybe there's a lot of extra code in place to monitor changes and see what is happening on your iPhone. Either way that's the life of the beta tester.

It's why I'm reticent to jump on board the iOS 17 beta train on my main device. I don't mind running it on a secondary device, where it doesn't matter too much if there are issues, but if there are issues on my main device, it's a lot more annoying.

I've happily put up with it during previous iOS releases, but this year I just don't feel like doing it yet... Maybe PB4 next week, if we are finally now on weekly update cycles?

It’s reports like this that make me worried about taking the PB3 plunge on my primary device. I’ve been playing with the DBs on a secondary device, but my primary is still on iOS 16.6 for stability! :)

Don’t worry because of my story: I put my phone through a punishing regimen today. Dozens of high res photos, heavy navigation use, all in hot weather. Lots of screen on time.

I was very happy, that in beta 4, there was zero issues with keyboard vibrations. Now in beta 5, issues are back. OMG!
This is another great example of why, this year at least, I've become very wary of beta madness on my primary device. I do have the beta installed on a secondary device, where it can't do any harm to my daily activities.

I must sound like a broken record saying this, but the beta process seems rougher than I remember it from years gone by, although I do remember annoying bugs then, too - keyboard not appearing when doing searches, which forced me for a week or two or three to put the most often used apps on the front page...

Anyway let's hope the betas are indeed weekly now and next week's beta update fixes some of the problems people are experiencing with the new beta :)

Keyboard vibration issues was in iOS 16 also and not in beta, but in release versions!

I’m having the opposite experience with 17 betas.
Every year I’d jump on betas but the little bugs would get so annoying that I’d revert to prior iOS in a day or two.

With iOS 17 the only major issue I had was the wallpaper going black issue which was resolved by changing the region and back. Practically flawless build performance wise, no stutters or keyboard issues and all the apps work with the exception of Sonos which was broken in the last beta but an easy workaround.

Should just be in the middle. Universally works for left and right thumbs one handed.

But I’m sure they must of conducted a study to see how many people use this one hand in this situation and how many were left handed and gone with the majority.

I don’t think Apple with all its design teams and vice presidents just one day, Willy nilly, moved such a key button without any deep thought. 💭

Photos widget issue;will sometimes not display a pic or display one ultra zoomed in

Yes, the middle position made the most sense. If you're right handed, it makes sense, but if you're left handed, it's a pain, you need to use your other hand to hang up (or ask Siri to hang up for you), or put the phone down on a table or surface and then hang up...

Like you said, Apple must have good reasons for this, but honestly, this is what the beta process is for, just because it is changed now doesn't mean that change will make it all the way through...

Muscle memory also affects the other buttons, too, for speaker, mute, etc etc...

As Craig Federighi said, we live in an age of wonders!

I’m not saying this is one of those situations but do remember that sometimes these inexplicable things that crop up during the betas all of a sudden make sense when the new phones are introduced in September.

I forget what it was specifically last year but IIRC there was something that made no sense during the betas until the Dynamic Island was introduced. Then everyone went “Ah! That was it!”

Here, perhaps this change relates to the rumored new physical Action Button.

We shall see!

Hopefully someone here remembers what it was.

As for the changing of the buttons and positions of the phone app in the iPhone 17 betas... unless it is a folding phone... I can't see why the buttons would be moved to the bottom, and even then, a folding phone is usually used unfolded...

Anyway... as you said, we shall see! I thought I read Apple wasn't doing folding phones until 2025... but anything can happen when Apple is involved! :)

Never had this issue with iOS 16 betas. It’s definitely an issue with iOS 17

We saw it in previous betas. Some people weren’t experiencing it, whilst others were. No different this year, just that this year it’s affecting you, but didn’t last year. It affected me last year, but not this year. Such is beta life.

Once we get to RC, you’ll see it resolve, same as it did for most that had the issue last year.

I have no idea how Apple's WiFi engineers can be so utterly incompetent. This beta still has the issue where my iPhone 13 Mini refuses to roam between access points after being connected to an 802.11r-enabled network for at least 30 minutes. I've been reporting this issue for well over a year now. Apple did get back to me at one point and said that their engineers determined the issue to be caused by my specific access points and that I should contact the manufacturer. This turned out to not be true because I got help from a WiFi professional on Twitter that was able to reproduce the same issue on his enterprise level access points. I submitted another bug report in Feedback with links and screenshots to the Twitter thread, but Apple ignored it.
Under feedback, what does it say for Recent Similar Reports? If it's "None", you're not going to get a lot of focus from them. They'll consider it a one off and won't effort a resolution quickly, if at all. Why we always beg users to report issues to get focus from Apple. Sucks, but the needs of the many and such. :(

Anyone seeing CarPlay's new Shareplay icon in the top right corner (as described elsewhere), using a XS and BMW's wireless CarPlay? Not showing up for me and can't seem to find a reason for (Music -> Discoverable by Nearby Contacts is ON, can't find any reference of e.g. a restriction related to supported iPhones)...

Update Aug 11: a second (or third) hard reboot (trying to get rid of the automatic turning off of the flashlight) apparently did the trick:

Believe me when I say that betas are actually much more stable than the days of yore. iOS 7 betas were a dumpster fire.
