I thought RCS wasn't coming until IOS 18. On it's write up many sites said we'd see it later in the year
11/16/2023
"Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe the RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users," said an Apple spokesperson.
It doesn't define this as happening in the next OS, just as a iMessage update .

also this was stated
Apple offered no details on which iOS update might include RCS support. And it's unclear just how many generations of iPhone will support the communication standard.
IMHO it's worth doing this sooner to show DOJ/EU that this isn't an issue to examine.

I still have this hunch 17.5 beta 1 is coming tomorrow after a 9 AM Eastern iPad announcement. The whole no announcement tomorrow could be to find the leaker or throw off the leakers.

Normally I would agree with you but for the fact that the end of this week begins the Easter holidays. I don’t see an initial in store release on Good Friday.

There is no way - none - that a major feature like RCS shows up in 17.5.
Per wiki
On November 16, 2023, Apple announced Rich Communication Services (RCS) support coming to iOS the following year, to work as a fallback when iMessage is not available and the other user is also using RCS, although they followed up by confirming that the RCS messages will remain green. After the news broke, Google revealed that they will be working alongside Apple to implement RCS onto iOS and iMessage.
I wonder if some of the discussions recently with Google are not all AI based? ;)

Below is from the same day as Apple announcement.

“Everyone deserves to communicate with each other in ways that are modern and secure, no matter what phone they have. That’s why we have worked closely with the mobile industry to accelerate the adoption of RCS, and we’re happy to see Apple take their first step today by coming on board to embrace RCS. We welcome Apple’s participation in our ongoing work with GSMA to evolve RCS and make messaging more equitable and secure, and look forward to working with them to implement this on iOS in a way that works well for everyone.”

I agree…I speculate that Apple (as well as me) will give two s**ts about any updates this week or next due to the Easter holidays.

After downplaying and calling i insecure for years it will be hard to sell it as an headline feature of iso 18
I doubt it'll be a headline feature, it'll be one of many features in the massive update iOS 18 is rumored to be. I can see them kind of glossing over it like they did with USB-C on the iPhone 15.

At the same time don’t underestimate Apple’s ability to make it sound like the greatest thing ever and why hadn’t anyone else thought of it before?

“𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺, 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘺!”

I wouldn’t say that there is no way. Past updates later in an iOS release cycle have surprised us with some pretty impressive feature additions.

All or nearly all of which were advertised in advance. Apple Music probably being the most notable.

I don’t recall a single significant feature being introduced without explicit preannouncement by Apple later than the X.3 version of iOS.

Apple has said nothing about including RCS in iOS 17. So while there is a first time for everything (especially with Apple), I don’t see this happening.

And RCS has been preannounced, so it’s totally possible it could come in an iOS 17 update. Besides, I believe that in the case of several features such as mouse support on iPadOS, they were not preannounced. I don’t think it’s really something one can be too dogmatic about, because A. it depends on what your definition of a “significant feature” is, and B. it has not always worked out that way. Also, this year has seen an odd release cycle with 17.4 and everything going on in the EU, so it’s possible that since 17.4 was pretty uneventful for the world outside of the EU, 17.5 could have some more features like Game Mode, perhaps RCS, maybe a few other refinements and new features, etc. Maybe that’s part of why it’s taken so long for Apple to deliver a beta for iOS 17.5. With how messed up this release cycle has been since iOS 17.4, I wouldn’t be shocked if we get more in 17.5, they’ve at least had plenty of time to incorporate some new things since they decided to hold off on releasing betas for a few extra weeks beyond what they normally would. They should have released betas for iOS 17.5 a couple of weeks ago, but maybe something like major bugs in the integration of RCS caused delays.

I think they are waiting for the iPad release, but who knows when that will be, with wwdc announced today they wouldn’t do anything else

I really hope we get 17.5 this week. If we get stuck waiting another week, and then it’s a puny update with hardly anything new, that would really stink. I’m hopeful that 17.5 might add a few new things, since 17.4 was so uneventful.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Apple hasn’t said anything about new features for iOS.

Which points at no 17.5. There will be 17.4.x thou.
