surely there will be a beta 8 next week, which will be another "a" build and to wait for the RC version that will be released after the iphone 15 launch event.

Agree. Both iOS 16.0 and 15.0 released 2 'a' builds before RC.
Thanks to your handy website link I was looking for... iOS 16 from last year is below:

Beta 7: 20A5356a
Beta 8:20A5358a
RC: 20A362
Final: 20A362

In summary, RC was only 6 builds newer than Beta 7, which isn't that many build jumps. Basically, beta 7 was pretty darn close to final.

But then 16.0.1 came out on iPhone 14 launch day at 20A371 (which you could argue is the "real" iOS 16 launch), which was 9 builds newer than Final.

Yeah. They kind of hit a wall with builds when they have to load it on the phones being assembled.

to add to this, last year beta 8 was released on the Monday before labor day, but only for iOS, watch/tv/etc didn't get a beta 8.

Yeah, it’s possible it will be today. Personally, I’m leaning more towards tomorrow, particularly if the event is 9/12 (which is when we’ll see the Release Candidate). It seems unlikely that they’ll run beta 8 for 2 weeks but it is possible.

I was hoping today, if only to fix the issues with Apple Music. I assume these are related to the current beta as they started last week (Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong)

Maybe a beta 9 next week ?

Internally Apple must be close to a release version if they are to start loading it onto phones ready for shipping.

there have been times when there was a launch day update, but that is rare

I am reasonably sure that Apple is already past the release day version and is loading it on phones, which are already being assembled.

Beta 7 was an "a" build. That kind of quality passing, might be good enough for Apple to get that onto new devices.

Then, buy the time they arrive in peoples hands, an update will be required to the official release... Something like that anyway.

That’s my thinking too. The build we get for Beta 8 this week, will have been done internally last week or so, and I reckon that’s the build they use for RC & put on the phones. Am sure that’s kinda what happened before, but I could be misremembering and got the lurgy, so not got the energy to go back and fact check myself

That’s how it works many years. Then you get 17.0.1 either phone release day or the following day or two.

And regarding the “a” build: the software that is ready on “start of production day” is what is going on the phones regardless of whether it’s an “a” build or a “z” build. Nothing stops the start of production.

But they have this whole process down to a science (that is the genius of Tim Cook: logistics). It will always be an “a” build going into the new phones because they planned it that way. None of this is by chance or coincidence, regardless of how it appears to those of us peering in through the keyhole.

Looks good. Feels good. Let’s roll on beta 8 today. Whoop, whoop 😍
