This was the biggest disappointment of iOS 17. Heck we have been asking for better keyboard and autocorrect for years. Hopefully AI makes that actually happen.
Admittedly on the iPhone I’m still on iOS 16, but for the past few weeks, I must correct some words pretty often. Sometimes, several times, as I go back, correct it, and it goes back to the nonsense typo. Even after three consecutive corrections.

As I said, I’m still on iOS 16 on the iPhone, but on my iPad I’m on iOS 17, and it’s the same mess.

I agree Siri is the key here. Making the AI built around that is the key to the future of AI for Apple. My only concern is what we have seen even in the WWDC presentation for Siri in Apple Intelligence wasn't that game changing as we are talking about. If that's Apple's goal, I hope they over this next year that is the work they put in. As you say, the writing tools are all fine, but not game changing.
As a lot of the pundits have said, it looks like Apple got painted into a corner and had to release this stuff a year earlier than they would have liked, maybe even 2 years (with iOS 20 looming). So it’s not as well baked as we might like. I respect them for knowing that and holding back the Siri stuff until next year. I could see it coming with 18.4. I could also see it being delayed until March / April or even WWDC 2025. I’d rather they do that and get it right.

Yep hasn't changed in years. We need an overhaul. If AI is that, I am all for it. And for the love of God please speed up the keyboard. The lag is just ridiculous.

100% agree I want it right, not half-baked. Like you said, Apple was backed into a corner, so this was get out what you can now and develop the rest over time. I stand by my statement somewhere on MR that iOS 19 and the iPhone 17 will be where we really start to see AI make a name for itself. iOS 20 is probably where it's matured to a point that it's solid and useful in a lot of ways.

All that to say, I am not mad a them for releasing what they have in this beta. It's just nothing game changing yet. Thats ok, we kind of figured that. Apple doesn't need to be first, they need to be better.

I am not getting the “Summarize” feature in my iPad Mail. Anyone else?

Edit: Nevermind. It’s showing up in individual messages and threads, but slowly.

They'll offer the two programs in parallel, and developers can opt-in to whichever one they prefer. It isn't stated anywhere that iOS 18 beta will no longer be offered to iPhone 15 Pro users.
We will likely find out for sure next week, when 18.0/15.0 beta 5 is posted — if it shows up for AI-capable devices (that aren't already running 18.1, of course), then that's pretty good confirmation that there will be parallel beta tracks (18.0/15.0 for the main public release without AI, 18.1/15.1 for October-ish release with beta-level AI functionality).

I don’t expect it to show up for devices already on 18.1, just as 17.6 is not showing for devices already running the 18.0 beta. But for devices still on the 18.0 beta, it will show up.

Yep, I added that caveat to the original post. (One would think that would be obvious, but long experience here and elsewhere has demonstrated otherwise.)

Interestingly, I’ve seen people sharing screenshots where the have some app icons not using a dark mode version, when I have the same app that is using dark mode and Vice Versa.

Like Telegram, mine is dark mode and my WhatsApp isn’t, but seen people’s screenshots whether they have it the other way round.

A weird inconsistency!

Not sure if this the case here, but I know I have notice if you use large icons you lose some of the dark mode icons. I know my bank app is dark mode on the normal icons, but if I go to large icons the icon is no longer dark. Otherwise, that is very odd that users would see inconsistency in dark mode icons.

With 18.0 I had all dark icons. Now, with 18.1 they are all back to "normal".

My guess is that they forked 18.1 off 2-3 weeks ago, so we are reverting back to the 18.0 beta 2/3 builds.

I have certain apps that are light on the Home Screen (when dark is enabled) but in search the same app is dark.

Interestingly, I have found that Apple’s writing tools will not work if you have the name of one of the two US Presidential candidates in the text selected. I get that they don’t want to get enmeshed in American politics, but by doing this, they just got themselves enmeshed in US politics.

Edit: On further investigation, the tools do work, but not without the following caveat:

In a call, there’s an icon on the top left of the screen, press that.

I tried it out... still needs work:
- transcript is hit & miss, especially on what the person you called is saying
- call recording quality is poor
- I was under the impression that the call recording would include the "this call will be recorded" notification in it. (I heard the prompt after activating call recording, but it was not on the recording itself.)_

Data integrity. Actually poor initial build data.
Another item to consider is cost. Ai is expensive. How are these companies going to cover the cost of Ai.

Was the same starting with one of the 18.x betas… I’ve got a feedback in (see attached) but currently they say “Unable to diagnose with current information” so I guess they don’t have a good way to track why it stopped working properly.
Sometimes it depends on how you write it. They've found a fix for it.

15 ProMax and AirPods Pro 2

Was using YouTube and listening to a Linkin Park list. The sound would shift, usually lower, between some songs and even during a song. Stopping play and restarting momentarily fixed the issue. I tried the same list on another device using Nothing 2 headphones without experiencing the same issue. Having listened to this list a number of times I was displeased at the sound level variations.

only issues ive really seen on my 15 Pro is the battery life has taken a small hit but its manageable, the CarPlay read back of my dictated text message responses are "slooooow" vs reading them when received and the microphone icon what should be in the search field sits over my first up top text message in the message app halfway through the line.

the only really annoying bug is the CarPlay Siri read back being slow, and doesn't sound like the natural quicker voice it was before or what it gives for text message read back of new messages.

Is it me, or are people becoming incredibly lazy? You want things summarized so you don't have to read. You want the computer to write things for you.

Come on, folks, reading and writing are basic human skills. We shouldn't be passing this stuff off to AI. It's going to make communications even more impersonal and robotic than they already are.
I have a friend that consistently sends me 8-15 texts at once. The majority of times, it’s about nothing. So yes, give me a summary. No I’m not lazy, but I do have a newborn. Besides, last I checked, I still have to read the summary… 😉
