Can’t believe the bug causing poor audio quality with voice recordings made/sent via the Messages app STILL hasn’t been fixed. It’s been around since iOS 17.5!

There’s a pretty simple workaround for it, but it’s still annoying to have to do the workaround every time you want to send an audio recording. To their credit, Apple has been making all kinds of great little improvements when it comes to the audio recordings in the Messages app, but apparently the actual sound quality of the recordings isn’t a priority.

Ever since beta 18.2 beta1 , image “clean up” after x amount of times of usage in one image crashes editing and closes photos. Ain’t tested it on this version yet.

Updated via IPSW on my 16PM and hoping for slightly better battery life than the RC's, which while not disastrous, were worse than 18.1.1 for me.

I was already hesitant to install RC2 as RC1 was doing so well on my phone.

I should have stuck with my decision, as the only impact of RC2 was to turn Bluetooth on and trash my control centre layout when I removed the "remote control" button which appeared by magic.

So, I'm skipping today's update*. Doesn't seem worth the effort (iOS and MacOS) especially when in a few days' time I'll be installing 18.3 beta 1 anyway.

*I thought the whole point of an RC release was to test what hits the public. Seems Apple doesn't follow that logic any more.

The App Store home page has been updated. Probably not related to the iOS 18.2 release, but still.

I've been trying to reproduce this with 3 different phones since it was first reported but never managed. Am I listening to it wrong? Or does it simply not happen to everyone? Do you have a link to some recording someone maybe made, on Youtube or elsewhere?

Everyone I know is experiencing this same bug, but I suppose it may not affect all users…

Again, to be very clear: this bug only pertains to audio recordings that were made and sent via the Messages app. The iOS Voice Memos app is perfectly fine.

Here’s a very simple way to check:

• In the Messages app, start recording a voice message as normal and speak for 10 seconds or so.

• Then temporarily stop the recording by tapping the red “stop” button.

• Then tap the little timestamp to the left of the blue “send” button to restart the recording and speak for another 10 seconds or so.

• Stop the recording again by tapping the red “stop” button.

You don’t need to actually send what you’ve recorded… there’s a “play” button on the far left that’ll allow you to preview what you’ve recorded before sending it. You should find that the first 10 seconds of your audio message sounds ok, but that the second 10 seconds of the message sounds noticeably better with much improved quality.

Never judge battery performance in the hours or even the first few days after an iOS update. The phone is doing all sorts of things post-update that are eating battery life.
Also there's the fact that that Apple is telling us that with the "Update finishing in background" message in the battery settings. That returned for me with the release. Not sure I looked after RC2 but it clearly says that "battery life and thermal performance will improve once finished". This message seems to stay for a day or two.

Good point. I’m not seeing that now but it might have been there earlier this afternoon.

Anyone else not seeing Genmoji show up? I got Image Playground working but can’t activate Genmoji in messages.

It sounded like I was supposed to be able to open the emoji search and type in the emoji to generate but I got nothing.

How did you install the IPSW? I am wondering if Apple Devices is still bricking apple devices upon updates or if it’s been fixed
