Anyone having random slow faceID ? Most noticeably when attempting to use saved info/passwords in safari. Both private and non private mode. No tabs running in the background.

Everyone I know is experiencing this same bug, but I suppose it may not affect all users…

Again, to be very clear: this bug only pertains to audio recordings that were made and sent via the Messages app. The iOS Voice Memos app is perfectly fine.

Here’s a very simple way to check:

• In the Messages app, start recording a voice message as normal and speak for 10 seconds or so.

• Then temporarily stop the recording by tapping the red “stop” button.

• Then tap the little timestamp to the left of the blue “send” button to restart the recording and speak for another 10 seconds or so.

• Stop the recording again by tapping the red “stop” button.

You don’t need to actually send what you’ve recorded… there’s a “play” button on the far left that’ll allow you to preview what you’ve recorded before sending it. You should find that the first 10 seconds of your audio message sounds ok, but that the second 10 seconds of the message sounds noticeably better with much improved quality.

Okay, I managed to reproduce it! And I think I figured out the cause. It's switching microphones.

During the first recording, it uses the top microphone (the one at the top of the screen). During the second recording, it uses the bottom microphone (the one in the speaker grille). You can verify that yourself by tapping and blowing into either microphones during both recording phases.

This also means that once you know which microphone it's using, you can also speak directly into the correct one, to work around the bad quality.

Am I being overly pessimistic or is this thread (and reddit) already filled to the brim with complaints in all directions after not even one day of usage on 18.2 GM, that is different build than RC1 and 2. Not that complaints have never existed before, but this is quite a bit of oddities.

This is embarrassing stuff for Apple IMO, I don't think I've seen it this bad any time recently. Not confidence instilling for the company.

...For what it's worth, I maintain that 18.0 is a nice release even with its shortcomings for x.0 far from the worst of those kind. But it seems like they keep fumbling with follow up updates. Shocking stuff

I don't think that's unexpected. The majority of users do not install an RC, let alone a beta. The user base is way bigger for a final release, and there will also be more complaints.

For me, 18.2 is the best release so far, very stable, no real complaints.

Sorry , im not saying that people having issues with RC1 and 2. I agree, with RC and beta you roll the dice.

I'm saying, lots of people reporting immediately observable issues after installing 18.2 final from yesterday, which isn't even RC1 or 2 build.

I don't doubt that some people do have great experiences on 18.2 With their device, but I'm also seeing a tidal wave of continued grievances. anecdotally - not speaking from my own personal experience I haven't made the move.

You're right, in that sense, I observed that too. 18.2 is a big upgrade. It seems clear that there is some kind of change going on with Mail which is creating issues to some. Most complaints I see are either about that, or then the usual "battery drain even though I only installed the upgrade 7 minutes ago" issues.

After upgrading from iOS 17 to iOS 18.2, Apple decided to turn on, without user consent, In-App Web Browsing and Significant Locations in Location Services – System Services. I’m so tired of Apple’s spyware.

Very interesting find. I’ve submitted feedback to Apple on this issue several times and nothing ever comes of it, but I’ll try again.

The microphone switching theory is quite curious… just tried recording a message while speaking into the microphone at the top of the phone and it *did* sound better than usual. Although I do think the bottom microphone sounds better when I tested both back to back.

Yes, the bottom microphone has always sounded better, on most iPhone models so far. There are some video recording apps out there that allow you to switch microphones, it's quite interesting to test.

Now that I’m off the beta train, can someone remind me what the link is for the web version of the feedback app? No clue why I can never remember…

I had that on RC1-- seemed to stop after a few restarts. Maybe from indexing slowing things down?

iPHONE bug encountered - I have noticed numerous instances of the call count not updating correctly
