Look guys if there is even anything next week (as Apple has already released an updated beta for iPhone 16s) it won’t be until Tuesday at the earliest, however I’m growing more and more doubtful for next week. Hopefully I’m wrong as this beta is growing more and more buggy by the day.
Does everyone forget this? (from 18.1 beta 3 SDK notes)
  • Updating from iOS & iPadOS 18 beta 5 to iOS & iPadOS 18.1 beta 1 is not currently supported and will be available in a future iOS & iPadOS 18.1 beta. (133235636)
I suspect that the current build that ships with iPhone 16's probably fails for the updating to beta 4 unless you install the revised beta 3 first. Why else would they release that right before the next beta 4 is due.

I'm curious.. now that the phone is landing on Sept 20, how many of us will go back to the stable channel? I'm debating it, but THIS year the beta channels have so much more to offer (early AI features)

Conventionally, I'm in the stable channel on my Apple platform until the new iOS/Mac/Watch/TV betas land.. but this year, it's kinda different

I have already gone back to the public release channel after installing the RC and plan to stay on it until the next summer, as usual.

As my iPhone 15 is not AI-compatible, no need to rush.

Stable channel on my iPhone 16 PM 1TB and on the beta on the 512GB version.

It is possible those who have iPhone 16s on developer beta see iOS 18.2 beta 1 in the near future. All other iPhone users could see iOS 18.1 public beta this week! As I suspect many would want Apple intelligence on their phones asap.

There is a lot going on at Apple for iOS by the sounds of it:

• 18.1 build for AI iphones
• 18.1 build for non AI iphones
• And an 18.1 build that updates from old iphones and for iPhone 16’s

🥶

Do you mean an 18.2 beta before 18.1 sees public release? I suppose that’s possible but seems unlikely.

At some point they have to offer universal, just a question of when, rather then separate beta cycles for each for months. This 18.1 running into Oct, and 18.0 out mid sept is strange. What does it take to get back onboard a multiple platform OS from Apple that recognizes suitable hardware?

Until iOS 12, both iPhone and iPad use the same release with minor adjustments/modifications depending on the device... Since iOS 13 and introduction of iPadOS 13, iPhone and iPad now have dedicated releases depending on the type of device... Now in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, not only iPhone and iPad have separate releases but there will also be Apple Intelligence on-device and remote request [iPhone 15 Pro and newer vs iPhone 15 and older]

For me it makes no sense to have 18.1 and 18.2 betas running together, as this would confuse a lot of people.

I guess they will release a unified iOS 18.1 at some point with downloadable AI bits for supporting devices.

A separate beta for iPhone 16 is just a one-off thing to allow current, pre-iPhone 16 18.1 testers to carry on.

Remember 18.0 public beta was out, and 18.1 beta for developers was out for iPhone 15s at the same time. With this in mind, we could see iOS 18.1 public beta and have iOS 18.2 developer beta out at the same time.

My guess when iOS 18.1 public beta comes, (dev beta 4), we will see iOS 18.2 developer beta for iPhone 15s and 16s.Which could be as soon as the week of the 23rd.

Each device gets its own release essentially. And it’s been that way for years as devices have had different cameras, sensors, capabilities, etc. So nothing new there.

The 18.0/18.1 thing was anomalous, I believe. I suspect the 18.1 beta was probably more for PR purposes than actual testing purposes (though testing was a helpful byproduct). Apple needed to demonstrate that Apple Intelligence wasn’t just so much vaporware.

From here, I think we’ll see betas resume their normal cadence together.

I agree with @Pearsey: I don’t think we’re going to see overlapping betas again. See my response just above to @winxmac, also.

It’s a lovely thought to have all these betas out in the wild, but they only got 18.1 out of the box to get that AI testing feedback back and so devs can get to grips integrating it into their apps early on - it’s a big integration getting that to work flawlessly.

They also want/need to get 18.1 out very soon as the 16s will be in people hands with no AI being available yet. It was such a big topic at the event and it’s all over iPhone 16s marketing they can’t afford to keep the foot off the gas or that’s just very bad PR for a tech company.

Once that’s released I’m sure that week, a couple of days after, we will see 18.2 beta. And I’m really looking forward to that for the Mail App redesign.

That’s just what makes sense in my head, see what happens hey.

Gurman only had this for Sunday morning to offer
Apple’s new AirPods hearing-aid feature and other health capabilities made up for an otherwise dull iPhone 16 launch.
Apple Inc.’s iPhone 16 launch was mostly about refining the device’s nuts and bolts, rather than introducing exciting overhauls or new features.
The iPhone 16 will be missing some key features when it debuts. Though Apple said several times that the iPhone 16 is the first model “built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence,” the first versions won’t even include the AI system out of the box. (There’s also the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro line will run Apple Intelligence too.)
As I’ve been warning for several weeks, Apple Intelligence won’t be arriving until October. That means early iPhone 16 buyers will need a software update to take advantage of the new iPhone's biggest selling point.
Beyond the initial Apple Intelligence features, users will need even more software updates down the road. There will be one in December to add AI-generated emoji known as Genmoji, as well as the Image Playground capabilities and ChatGPT integration.
And if you want the new Siri digital assistant to actually be useful, you’ll have to wait until a software update around next March. Apple Intelligence aside, there are some other features coming later as well, including a two-stage shutter in the Camera Control button that will lock focus and exposure. A Google Lens rival called Visual Intelligence — also tied to the Camera Control button — is still on the way too.

if its december for the image and chat GPT stuff I’ll probably go to 18.1 stable asap. Whats the best way to do that - wait for an RC developer beta then flip to the public channel, or move over to public beta and it won’t serve me a new version until Beta 4 equivalent (I’m on dev Beta 3)

I think the purpose of iOS 18.1 betas was to get the AI bits “out there” as soon as possible. Once iOS 18.1 PB is out, what would the purpose of this 18.2 beta be then?

We could speculate, of course, that it would be a strictly developer beta, but what’s the point, considering anybody subscribed to a beta channel can download both developer and public betas.

This does not seem to make much sense.

@gwhizkids You think I should pretty good to go tomorrow? I'm making the jump from 17.6.1 to 18. I know they say this is one of Iphones biggest updates but it sounds like there won't be a bevy of features on the initial update. You think it's a good chance it goes pretty smooth? I'll be backing up my phone obviously

Yes. I think you will be fine. And I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the new features you will see even without Apple Intelligence.

Good luck!

I think this is the right way of thinking about the AI rollout. 18.1 public beta for all the new iPhone 16 buyers, so they can experience a glimpse of the AI features they touted at the keynote but simultaneously start testing the almost full featured AI rollout with 18.2 developer beta. I think that one will have to have a longer testing period (09-12/2024). The .3 release and beta will be a maintenance release with .4 starting testing in january 2025 and releasing in march 2025 with Siri 2.0

I'm just waiting for iOS 19 or 20, when they remove it again because the hype is gone and nobody wants to see those awful images or read those texts. And everyone is still complaining about Siri.
