Probably because they will be doing the press release for the Mac hardware this afternoon.

Edit: I see the new iMacs have already been announced. As a result Its probably because they were announced along with Apple Intelligence that Apple did not want to have a time lag and so released it early so that people would not think that it was unavailable.
Makes sense

I was on the RC and then turned off beta updates, kinda glad there is a new build so now I am 100% on a public non beta build. There’s a small part of me in the back of my head that questions if the RC is really the same as a public release, so it’s nice to not have to worry about it now.

The new iMacs were unveiled with an Apple event-like video that talked about Apple Intelligence and mentioned that it's available today. The release timing was more than likely synced with that.

I checked and there it was; now running 18.1. Must say the update was shockingly quick--around five minutes not only to DL the 1.8GB file(s) but then the install/restart took way faster than I'd have imagined. Must have mostly to do with my new iPhone 16 Pro's processor. Amazing.

Who here has any tips on testing the new AI feature(s)? For fun, I mean.

Any speculation about when we might receive the 18.2 B2 update? I’ve heard some rumors from a few people who believe that the full release version of 18.1 has resolved some battery issues. I’m curious if we might see a similar fix (if it’s genuine) in B2.

I’ve been experiencing dreadful battery life since the day I got my 16 Pro. Even with only 3 hours of screen time and 6 hours of idle time, the battery drops to 43%. There are no hardware problems, and I’ve reached out to Apple support multiple times, but they haven’t provided any answers. It would be fantastic if we finally have a solution to this issue.

Had little issue on mine after everything settled down, but for what it’s worth I think they’re saving all the other battery optimizations for the 18.2 RCs and beyond.

Most likely next week for beta 2 of iOS 18.2…

Thanks for the info! My battery issue seems more serious than the usual “battery drain after an update” complaints—it’s a genuine problem. I’ve opened a case with Apple in the feedback app, so hopefully, they’re looking into it.

Fingers crossed that Beta 2 of 18.2 includes some of the improvements we saw with 18.1!

No problem! Hoping this gets sorted out. 🤞

I hope in beta 2 they fix the support for third party app stores on dev accounts. I am anxious to try them.

Thank you! I’m curious—why do you think true battery optimization won’t come until the 18.2 RC? Is that when Apple typically refines things, especially for AI features? Is that where the real progress usually starts?

Apologies for all the questions! I’m still learning how Apple handles updates, and of course, the year I dive in is when things seem more unpredictable than usual.

I know some people might say I shouldn’t expect good battery life on betas, but I’ve genuinely tried everything else. Downloading 18.2 Beta 1 felt like my last option.

What you are describing is about 18 hours of battery life with fairly significant use. Add to that a much more resource hungry Apple Intelligence feature-set and I’d say it sounds like things are just about where they should be.

We have zero benchmark data for how Apple optimizes things power-consumption-wise for AI. If you noticed, the very first AI iOS release was…today. If you want good battery life, you should never get on a beta.

No worries! No such thing as too many questions 😜 we’re all learning something.

First off I really can’t recommend getting a beta, granted I’m running 18.2 but in your case it might break more than it’d fix. Betas are just iffy like that.

My understanding is it’s supposed better as a version progresses to RC/general release status, but who knows with this rollout! Can’t speak on the 18.1 betas as I’ve gotten them on my old phone that didn’t support Apple Intelligence, but anecdotally it seems to me that whatever battery optimizations there are in the final release, could’ve been added in no matter which beta or RC of said version was being developed. At least the ones we got before Apple Intelligence dropped.

The other thing, again anecdotally, is 18.2 didn’t feel as big a mess as the first betas for 18.0. If you do decide to get on the train, all the caveats apply, but again can’t recommend you to do so in good conscience
