There is the plight of all of us beta testers. You hope what you get is what you want, and recently its more hype then substance, still if it just works and you can experience the joys of being with family and friends this holiday season along with lots of good food and entertaining each other that is all you really need. Merry Christmas! :)

If only the local suburbs looked this good!

Merry Christmas to you as well! 👍🏻🎄

For you minor release lovers out there, cause to rejoice!

This could be a nice Christmas present for all of us minor update nerds! 🤓

I wonder if it is possible that we get an update this week or next week. It isn’t normal for them to do so during the holiday period. But like other items, they had a lot of direction changes during the 18 cycle. So maybe we get this curve ball as well.

This week? It’s Sunday so there’s no chance of getting an update.

When is the next business day in the US after the holidays?

I thought apple was on break now till after the new year?

usually when we get rumors about a new release its been released in like the same week

see iOS 18.0.1 for example..

was reported coming soon then was actually released like 1 day later..

wouldn't surprise me then if it shows up tomorrow Monday before Christmas

I’m not from the US so not really familiar with official holidays. Is it correct that they still work tomorrow on Monday and the 25th is when the holiday starts? Then I’d say it’s very likely we will see 18.2.1 on Monday. Otherwise I say first week of January.

Yeah, Christmas is officially on the 25th, and most businesses also take Christmas Eve off as well, which is the 24th. So I think Monday could be a possibility if they’re looking to release an update. A release so close to Christmas wouldn’t be usual, but it is possible, especially if 18.2.1 addresses some security vulnerabilities, and/or bugs that has a far reaching impact. I suspect in this case it would be more about security, as 18.2 seems very stable, and while some have run into bugs on 18.2, they don’t seem to be very widespread among non-beta testers. 👍🏻

Most of Apple is off until the New Year. Retail ops obviously continue as do urgent technical operations. A minor release is almost always an urgent matter, so it will get addressed regardless of the general company-wide holiday schedule.

If they found an urgent matter a vulnerability, wouldn’t that also be present in 18.3? We have seen urgent small security updates to betas recently in 18.0 beta, so maybe they could do that for both 18.2 and 18.3 beta.

Apple employees (campus, not retail) have several weeks of vacation to use each year, so even with priority given a security patch, launching it on a Monday and then the next two holiday days 24th, 25th with poor support in case of something unexpected wouldn't be wise at all from a support perspective. So week of the Jan 6th would be more likely.

It’s a good point, but a beta is always a beta and their content might have other priorities I would imagine, and also not aimed for most users. Easy for us to forget. Vulnerabilities might just be released through official releases before part of betas.

On the other hand though, if they found a significant vulnerability that they’re working to address, I think they would roll out a patch update as quickly as possible, regardless of the holidays or vacations. I’m sure they have to have some staff on hand at all times for critical security patches. And a critical security fix is the only reason I could think of for an imminent 18.2.1 release.

Exactly this.

Also remember that Apple’s engineering team is not all US based. Some are in countries that don’t celebrate Christmas.

Security patches are often research extensively, not spur of the moment solutions. A lot of patching occurs well after it's been reported, but deployment risk is not trivial. Its not like this late after 18.2 has been released that Apple would do something on a poor support week.

From the software side I think Apple is mostly USA based. They have locations in multiple states and here in Silicon Valley they have many buildings, in multiple cites close by and up the bay. From a manufacturing engineering perspective that are setup in a lot of countries. But given the AI example of closing Siri staff work at San Diego to have that work occur in Austin Texas shows Apple likes to have centralized teams that can do it all for everyone in the world, not teams that can't be managed locally.

But at this point if they are releasing 18.2.1 this close to Christmas, I would think it’s a major vulnerability. I know betas are expected to have issues, but if there is a major vulnerability, I would think they would need both to have the update.

Exactly, I would think the same if an 18.2.1 is indeed imminent. Otherwise, I think they’d wait ‘till after holiday break.

Same. I mean like gwhizkids always says, these updates were in a roadmap a long time ago. If they find some major problem, they will push it out as fast as possible to both 18.2 and 18.3. If it’s just a small problem, it will wait until after the holidays most likely.

Whoever posted the link to the homepage article about 18.2.1, it said late December to early January. Didn’t say anything about it being before Christmas. Not saying it can’t happen, but highly unlikely.
