Remember the days when mobile CPU's were seeing large improvements year on year, and new features only worked on newer phones. Well it's the same again but with NPU's rather than CPU's. The 15 Pro has 2x the performance of the 15 so while it might be frustrating it's not really surprising that features are going to be gated to newer chips.

On-device AI requires A14 NPU or faster because M1 is supported. This is a matter of 8GB RAM required.

It seems Apple is unable to unwilling to develop a nano model for 6GB iPhones.

Does anybody really think Apple is going to get the AI features to work perfectly right out of the box? I highly doubt it. Keep your old phone and wait for it to work decently (or change to an Android). I'm keeping my 12 mini until it dies which will hopefully be around the time of the iPhone 17 or 18.

I’m confused. One line says M1 and newer iPad pros will be able to do on device functionality, and a few lines later it says anything older than 5th gen IPP won’t support it? I have an M2 IPP but it’s 4th gen…? 16 gbs of ram, tho…
which is it, M1 or must be the Oled pro?

How did my 13 mini become obsolete so quickly?
Well firstly you bought the most underpowered version of your phones iteration... So right off the bat you were behind the 8 ball as opposed to if you had bought the 13 PM for example.

Secondly that's how technology works, especially with products that have a new iteration every year... in 2 or 3 years your current device becomes obsolete. especially if you purchase the entry level version of said product.

People make the mistake of thinking they are entitled to all future enhancements and updates, but in reality they aren't. You are just entitled to the features and enhancements available at the time you purchase your device. Any future updates are a perk that only some companies provide. but you're not entitled to it, you pay for the device in it's current form when you buy it.

...while anything older than the fifth-generation iPad Pro will not support on-device AI features in iPadOS 18.
I think you mean third-generation pro for an M1 chip?...

iOS should consume much less memory than MacOS.

Yes, but then iPhone 12 Pro/Max with A14 6GB RAM isn’t supported. Given M1 has the same NPU performance as A14, iPhone 12 Pro/Max should be supported.

Again, this suggests Apple is unable or unwilling to develop a 6GB nano model.

Ridiculous. We don't need anyone to tell us this.

If you are talking about not supporting "some" AI features, then the answer is ALL of them except iPhone 16 Pro/Max.

It has been the case with all iOS releases, that some extra features will not be announced until September that will be reserved for the newest hardware.

These, of course, include features that could run very well on the phones released the previous year or even two years ago.

Reference point is 12-inch model since that’s the true Pro.

Of course "older" iPhones won't support it, why would they make it compatible...

My 2 cents on AI is a quote from the interweb
"I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes"

We need more critical thinking not more aritificial intelligence.

And given that logic, just confused how the 15 Pro/Pro Max is supported yet the regular 15 isn't
