Yes, but if the Siri features had really been delayed all the way into iOS 19 or iOS 20 as some suggest, I would think Apple would release a public statement saying as much. Or they would at the very least change their site’s phrasing on their official page so that it wouldn’t be saying the features are coming in the “coming months”. Reading the statement everyone’s going nuts over, it seemed to me more like the Apple spokesperson was explaining why we didn’t already have those features, and that they’re anticipated releasing them in a later 18 update like 18.5, 18.6, 18.7 etc. But I will grant you that it’s vaguely stated, so one could interpret it in a way where 19 or 20 could be an option. But if they were seriously expecting that long of a wait, I would think they would make a public statement and such as I said. And they haven’t done any of those things. Also, this is literally just what one Apple spokesperson said in an interview, it’s not on the same level as a public statement from Apple…

For sure it is vague and probably deliberately so. They seem to be struggling to make progress on this and may not be certain about their timeline. Vagueness buys them a little a little deniability. Though I'm not sure that will offset the loss of confidence from the failure to deliver. This is embarrassing.

I think Gurman is saying the more conversational Siri that uses an in-house LLM is delayed past his initial speculation of 19.4 and won't be announced as part of iOS 19 because they fear they might not get it done in time. That stuff doesn't even exist yet. No announcement and no plans. Might be iOS 20. Might be never. Gurman is the only person saying anyone was even working on this project. Hard to say unannounced things are also delayed (see HomePad iPad thingy).

The Siri features that are delayed are the iOS 18 features announced last WWDC. Those are the ones that will probably end up in iOS 19. No way that stuff delays to iOS 20 without some major drama.

You could also say that they would put out a statement denying the reports that it’s delayed until next year if that wasn’t the case. I mean their stock is being absolutely crushed right now. I think the truth is Apple is trying to work on these features as quickly as they can, and not even they know when they will be ready. Which is concerning, to say the least.

I mean their stock is being absolutely crushed right now.
Some of that is also speculation on chips, since they announced an M3 Ultra and not an M4 Ultra. Some shaken faith in Apple's future with more than one investor, I'm sure. (And some of it is also the fact that we are in very unstable times with tariffs and an engineered recession, but I will avoid getting too political.)

One of the main things I’m hoping for with iOS and iPadOS 19 is the ability to pin folders, files, and such to the Home Screen. I already created Siri Shortcuts for pinning these things on the Home Screen, which I shared in a GitHub Repository (https://github.com/KalCadle/iPadOS-Home-Screen-Folders-Files-Icons), but a faster and more convenient way of doing that would be nice. Similar to the Add to Home Screen option for web pages in Safari accessible via the Share Sheet.

That sounds like it could be pretty cool. I wonder if iPadOS will get something similar to a hybrid of Dynamic Island and the macOS Menu Bar. Perhaps macOS will also adopt something more Dynamic Island-like as well. It will be really interesting to see what they do with iOS and iPadOS 19! 👍🏻

Hmm so is it gonna look like this

Hopefully not (at least not as the only option). Apple just had app developers rework their app icons to support dark mode, I don’t think they would just go on to make developers have to redesign their icons again just the next year. What I would rather they do is make an option for people to choose round or squircle icons as a customization/theming option, similar to dark mode icons. As an optional thing, it would appease both sides. Those who prefer the current squircle icons can stick with them. Those who want round icons could choose those. Everyone’s happy. And I think given Apple’s recent track record with dark mode and light mode icons, I think it’s likely Apple would give us options for icon shape rather than a forced change.

But add a translucent app dock behind that bottom row of app icons, and squircle icons, and I’m in! 👍🏻

I like round icons personally and most icons can be cropped, would not be a huge ask to devs imo. Not a big deal either way though, I would be surprised if they gave a choice between square and circle because unlike dark/light mode that would be a pretty big difference and Apple likes to keep things consistent; consistently between their product’s design is allegedly one of the main goals of the redesign.

I don’t like round icons because they can roll off your screen.

I sincerely hope they don’t ruin the look of iOS with circle icons. I’m not opposed to it as an option for those who like circle icons, but as the only option? That would be sad. It doesn’t even go well with widgets. Every comment section I see is very divided about the idea of circle icons, and perhaps I’m biased, but it seems like most people commenting tend to oppose the idea. So hopefully they wouldn’t make such a divisive and controversial change without providing an option to retain squircle icons for those who oppose it.

If Apple manages to make a bug-free operating system (which I realize is impossible), they can make the icons triangles for all I care.
I’d live through some bugs to retain the squircle icons. The squircle icons make iOS look distinct and make it look much better than Android. Circle icons would completely remove the literally iconic iOS aesthetic. And it would drag iOS down to the level of Android. I sincerely hope they wouldn’t make such a bad choice with no alternative option to keep squircle icons.

Well lucky for you it won’t ruin the look of iOS 😆.

What I care way more about than shape is the size. I use a 16 pro max and wish I could have smaller icons and more total per page.

And I am ready for a change, whether it’s circle icons or something else, or both. I hope we finally get some real changes in the design. People will complain no matter what, they should just do it, there will always be new bugs and apparently it’s already been delayed a year. So they should just do the redesign and ignore the naysayers in my opinion.

And bring back landscape home screen! 😡

Landscape Home Screen, sure.

Changes to the icon, sure. I’d like something like the neumorphic macOS icons. They could do different icon designs, I’m fine with that, I think some new designs would be nice. Especially the Mail app icon hasn’t changed since iOS 7 except for dark mode.

I just don’t want to be forced into circle modes. As I said, I’m fine with it as an option. But I just really don’t like the circle icon look. And many icons would need a total rework to work in a circle format. So I don’t think Apple’s going to make app developers rework their app icons all over again just a year after they introduced dark mode icons. Circle icons as an option could possibly work, but as the only option you would end up with tons of iOS app icons that wouldn’t look right on day one because they weren’t designed to be circle icons. Even with dark mode icons there are still icons that don’t support dark mode. So I think there’s good reason to think Apple would make it an optional thing if they do circle icons at all. And Gurman didn’t say they would switch to circle icons.

You are overestimating how difficult it would be, most look fine just from cropping the icon, that’s how the jailbreak tweak works. That said I would be surprised if Apple change to circle icons, probably won’t happen.

Cropping works for app icons like the ones you’re showing there, but I’m talking about several app icons that use the full squircle space for their design, or use enough of it that you’d end up with weird parts getting cut off. For example, I’m thinking of the Wallet app, Duolingo, Files, Contacts, Journal, Screens, and Apple’s recent Sports and Invites apps. Some of those could have their symbols scaled down and inserted, but others like Sports use the icon to represent a real-world squarish space, a football field. Invites uses the square to represent an invitation envelope. There’s so many third party app icons as well that utilize the shape for their icons. So I think several would have to modify their icons to work with that system if that’s the new default and only way of displaying icons. 👍🏻

I’m glad we agree about the likelihood, I’m really hoping we keep the squircle icons, even if we see some new designs for the icons. What I’d love to see is something similar to the neumorphic icons on macOS. If they wanted to add an icon picker and an icon shape customization tool, I would be happy with that as well. 👍🏻

I am interested in seeing what other changes they would make with the UI. It would be interesting to see if macOS gains some more iOS and iPadOS touches, like App Library to replace Launchpad, the new customizable Control Center, Dark Mode icons, and maybe macOS and iPadOS will get some kind of Dynamic Island/Menu Bar hybrid. Also it would be great to get landscape Home Screen on iPhones again, FaceID now works in landscape, most games only work in landscape, and it can be awkward leaving a landscaped game to have everything else in portrait. With Apple’s focus on gaming on the iPhone, I think landscape mode interactions on the iPhone would make a lot of sense.

Split View would also be nice, especially on larger iPhone models. I personally probably wouldn’t use it, but I know a lot of people request it, and it makes sense to me as an option. 👍🏻

Their roadblock will be getting Siri 2.0 to work within the parameters of their current on-device LLM. If they were to offload it to a server, even a PCC one they'd have no excuse not rolling it out to older devices which would remove their advertised upgrade path. This will never happen.

My guess is they are waiting for future iPhone models with more RAM to run them and it will not be an iOS19 feature but rather an iPhone 17 one (or whatever). But they've already advertised it to iPhone 16 buyers! Releasing it exclusively for the iPhone 17 or later will no doubt result in a few 'not as advertised' lawsuits.

Given the market apathy towards LLMs in general, I do wonder if they shouldn't just tank the whole idea and instead look at other areas of the OS or apps that might benefit from the current AI backend instead. Perhaps a presentation generator for Keynote or an 'Audio Playground' app to create alert tones or garageband loops from a hum or recording (and kill off the little-used Tone Store in the process). I imagine a sweet piece of marketing where a parent creates a Homekit alert using the cry from their newborn as the source or something 💕
