Tune-In Radio now plays in the background on iOS4 :)

I just had to try this out for the sake of experiencing background audio. I now remember why I stopped listening to the radio years ago. Even the good channels are terrible compared to an iPod with 21 gigabytes of music or a Pandora / Last.fm type app.

I agree, radio sucks in general, but public radio has some good shows and local news is sometimes useful (especially during a hurricane when you have no power at home like during Ike a few years ago). I can also listen to local news from back home (Canada) while I"m in Texas.

I haven't seen any game updates that actually use 4.0 APIs. Canabalt, for example, just got an update to make it launch, which it hadn't done since the betas.

Ambience is updated with background audio and task completion.

iBooks is now live. Go find it in the App Store.

I was upset to see Angry Birds update but with no save state.....

Wordpress just updated today as well.

Ambiance, my favorite studying app, is now iOS4 ready with background playback and a bunch of other features. Much needed!

I posted links and info about 2 of my new apps that just went "ready for sale," Web2Txt and TrackMyPhone. Another app is also 4.0-ready. An update to CurrentTemperature will now automatically change the zip code it uses for temperature based on significant location changes in the background on iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.

I'll be posting promo codes for all 3 apps later tonight.

radioBox is multitasking enabled. Plays in the background. However the audio controls still control the ipod app.

Has any sort of chat app that supports google talk been updated for iOS4 yet?

Trillian appears to be working just fine on iOS4, been using it for the past 2 days without any issues. It hasn't been specifically updated for iOS4 but it's working just fine regardless.

Not a whole lot a chat app can do with multi-tasking. The developer has made hints that they'll be adding task completion for sending messages and i'd have to guess probably for file transfers too. But otherwise not much you can really do.

People keep saying that chat apps don't really need multitasking. What about the need to keep the app open and have it continuously check for new msgs? Am I missing something here. I want to be able to carry on a chat without having to keep the app active.

Most good IM apps use push notifications. So you don't need to have the app open all the time to receive IMs, since your connection is maintained on the chat apps server. Multitasking doesn't really benefit IM programs. My guess is the most they will use of the new API is to save state so they can return where they left off (even though most already do this).

Maybe I'm the only one but fast app switching would be what I want for IM's. I use Trillian, and sure it works great with iOS4, but its annoying having to wait for it to re-connect to the server every time before I can read the messages I already have on the phone. Even if it just suspended and picked up where it was, but then had to wait the 10 seconds to connect to the server in the background before sending a reply message would be great. I hate having to leave the app to do something else, only to get a message 10 seconds later and having to wait the 15-20 seconds for it to get by the "resuming..." screen.

Keeping the connection with the server is not allowed in the new multitasking api. There is no way around reconnecting to the server. Apple included a lot of limitations and seemingly made it so IM apps specifically couldn't work with the api.

You can do that just fine now. 90% of my conversations involve responding then waiting for a response for 30-60 seconds. So I really don't mind push notifications. I have no real desire to carry on full fledged conversations from my phone in real time either. If I wanted to do that I'd get on my computer where I can type faster and do other things at the same time.

Apple laid the ground rules for multitasking. They make a lot of sense. They clearly say what can and cannot be done via multi-tasking. IM apps are best used with Push Notifications. It's better that way.

If you want crap to continually run in the background, check out Android. Trust me, the grass isn't greener. I have a Nexus One and it's a pile of trash in the software department. Meebo stays connected for about an hour or so then somehow gets killed by the system and I receive zero messages.

Either way, I'm quite happy with the way Trillian works. The next update will make it even better with task completion when sending messages. Can't wait.

Thanks, I think I figured out why I was confused. Whenever I closed fring it logged me out of my chat session, it was a glitch in the software not a feature, I always assumed that it was a multitasking issue.

I stand corrected...Thanks!

As an update, Spotify tweeted saying that they were "working on" iOS4 compatibility but no ETA atm. :( Disappointing, I remember a tweet celebrating multitasking the day of the Apple keynote so I thought they'd be faster with it. This is the one app I'll really miss Backgrounder on.

Um~~I hope i don't bother any of u :(
Our app is iOS 4.0 ONLY
Mosaic Emoji Messenger

It is NOT one of those simple emoji enablers overflowing in AppStore
Instead, it allows you to DRAW the emoji and send it thought SMS :)

I'm not getting as many updates as I'd like. Only three apps on my phone are 4.0 ready and I haven't gotten one single update today, although I'm not sure what hours the reviewers in Cupertino work.
