How about doing the test again without the super fast jab at the screen icon and see what happens? Can't tell if that is a software bug or just the way you are attempting to engage the screen icons.
I can't because I have to to it with one hand if I want to record it. All you do it hold one finger so the apps in the app switcher is as far to the left as they can go and you tap the home screen once while keeping it held to the left.

Great! Maybe beta 2 even better! We can see the promised land!

I hope so!

By the way, is this new in 9.2? Never seen calendar event on proactive Siri (Reminder always there).

Edit: the calendar event now disappear. Guess it shows up because I previously edited the events. Too bad, I thought it would be persistent there until the event ends.

iPad Mini 2 — super huge improvement on app switcher (still stutter, but now acceptable). Spotlight stutters worser, but still better than occasional 3-5 second lag on 9.1.

BRB crying in happiness.
Yep, iPad mini 2 is now the little iPad that could instead of couldn't!

I still would like a smoother app switcher though but this is much more tolerable. Scrolling past home screen still stutters, clearing apps when blurred apps are in the background still stutters, and opening/closing switcher still suffers but not NEARLY as bad!

Spotlight is real nasty, it was the best I've ever seen it on this iPad with 9.0 oddly enough (except for that hesitation when swiping down quickly) but 9.1 made everything awful.

General app open/close sometimes has very small problems but I can see that being fixed.

Oh and anyone else notice how the bug in safari tab view is fixed? Before when you swiped across to close a tab, it would instantly disappear, but now it sweeps across the screen how it should. That bug has annoyed me for awhile now.

Honesty, I didn't expect the app switcher to be incrementally smoother (while could be better) by only one iteration (9.1 to 9.2b). This really makes me believe that future updates could bring surprises!

Yes, there's still stutters here and there—but not nearly as bad and I can now enjoy mini as it should be!

I dunno about you guys but I have trouble believing that Apple would ever smooth out scroll stutter/frame-rate issues that are completely botched ever since the release of iOS 9.0. Just scroll anywhere, go up & down and scroll longer, there isn't a single area in the OS that doesn't show stutter! And I'm talking about the new devices like the 6S!

They sorted all kinds of problems with iOS 7.1 compared to 7.0 and later versions of iOS 8 compared to 8.0, so it's hard to really say much one way or another at this point.

I didn't think there would be any improvements in performance in this beta either, but they're definitely there.

1) App Switcher used to slightly stutter when animating back from the top most app (i.e. launch app switcher and then immediately go back to previous app or home screen). This has been fixed.
2) Rotation bug (either stuck in portrait or need to do various forms of voodoo to get 6s+ to rotate on home screen). This has been fixed.
3) 3D Touch laggy on 6s+. This has been improved, although not quite as smooth as a 6s.
4) Spotlight, Notification Center and Control Center are pretty fluid now.

I'd expect the GM to have some pretty solid additional improvements.

Apps switcher is choppy as hell on Air 2 when re-entering apps. Has this been addressed at all? Its seriously under 10FPS right now unless you have only 3 apps open. Turning off transparency makes it better so once again these stupid effects are slowing things down.

Agreed, I've noticed turning on Reduce Transparency makes a major increase in frame rate and smoothness. But my question to you is: does the reduce transparency option mess up the white virtual keyboard for you? Because when I turned that feature on I can't tell if I made a key press or not.

Man, those icons shown here in spotlight search are disgustingly blurry compared to the icons we see on the home screen. Also look at the 'rounded' edges on that calendar icon. It looks like whoever was responsible for polishing iOS 9 didn't pick this up or didn't care enough to make it look crispy sharp.

Ah, yes—just notice it too. Calendar icon also changed in spotlight. Take a peek below.

Yeah, this was persistent through iOS 9 public beta and somehow made it to the final release. In the latest 9.2 it's still like this. C'mon Apple, I know you love to talk about how much detail goes into designing the hardware. But having blatant flaws like this in the software is equally bad as having flaws in the external industrial design - since Apple tells us that the seamless integration between hardware and software is crucial to a superior user experience.

It's impossible for iOS to be flawless, but is fixing obvious flaws like these too much to ask for?

Guess they forget to change the code from 1x (non-retina) to 2x (retina) icon. Also they should change the default calendar icon to this one to make it consistent.

--------------------------

I now believe this is bad coding issue. App switcher performance is similar with reduced transparency on and off.

Yup, I'm still not seeing 60 FPS in the app switcher on any of my iPads running iOS 9.1 or 9.2. Even with Reduce Transparency on. And I couldn't agree more about the calendar thing, they should make it so the calendar looks the same as the icon on the home screen (where date is shown) - instead of this lazily vague calendar icon with dots and crap.

Key takeaway is that the performance issue is solely coding fault, not that our hardware is obsolete.

Means? It's fix-able!

"Maybe they'll fix it in the next update." is what I told myself before I installed 9.0.1 and every update thereafter. And yet here we are...

I try to not get my hopes up now.

BTW: my brand new iPhone 6S Plus still can't even deliver 60 FPS animation for spotlight and app switcher. Despite being a 2015 flagship with a processor that's basically the fastest on the market for a smartphone.

I think Apple should have just used a slightly faster A9 custom made for the Plus iPhones to accommodate the extra resolution in order to maintain UI fluidity. Or maybe just stick a slightly under clocked A9X in there and call it a day. Either would have guaranteed smoothness on par with the non Plus iPhone 6S.
