Starting with iOS7 I had trepidations about the "radical" design change JI wanted. I held my breath, loaded it and could find only one word to dequately describe it: Schizophrenic. The layout was unpolished, controls made no sense, buttons vs. icons vs. words (hidden buttons) to ... schizophrenic was a good term.

I had hoped iOS8 would fix this ... nope. Just a number of bugs and other features.

I had hoped iOS9 would fix iOS8 and the design ... just more bugs, a drop in performance, and other features.

Someone really needs to step forward and fix this. Even if it is so little as standardizing it.

Best modern mobile platform ... maybe for the patients at Menninger or the residents at the Homeless Mission.
They made the Music App so bad design wise that I had to pay $$$ to get a decently functional app for my music

It's not even just iOS 9 but their general new approaches to products and software...

iOS 9 was supposed to have major under the hood changes and is probably the most bug riddled OS I have seen. Considering they implemented a public beta program I figured they would have ironed everything out..

How people forget what iOS 8 and 7 were like in the early days.

iOS has pretty much sucked since 7.0 and every year since we have this sort of revisionist history with each version making it seem like the last one was incredibly perfect when it was honestly just as bad. The only versions of iOS that I genuinely miss are anything pre-iOS 7.

iOS 6.1 was the last really good version IMO

Would you really go back to iOS 6.1, though?

Hellz yeah! I really miss the music app from that version. Also the UI and performance were far superior to what we have now. If I could run iOS 6.1 on an iPhone 6/6S, that would be a dream come true!

I take it you don't use Safari, the built in mail app, control center, air drop, iCloud, or Siri?

iOS 6.1 had everything you mentioned save for control center and air drop. Let me rephrase what I said earlier: If I could have a version of iOS resembling 6.1 with most of the current features (save for Apple Music) and with similar performance running on an iPhone 6/6S, then that would be incredible!

iOS 6.1? Really? That's ancient history my friend!

Yeah, but everything has been improved between 6.1 and 9.2.

Good luck with that! Let's not forget the critical security updates baked into every succeeding iOS. I wouldn't run iOS 6.1 even if you paid me to do it!

It is, but that doesn't change that it was better in various aspects, in particular various ones that seem to be in contention once again for some people with iOS 9 (as they were for many with iOS 7).

Well, certainly not everything given all of the lag/stutter/responsiveness discussions that have been around ever since iOS 7.

Well I for one, have been very happy with the current iOS 9.x on all my devices. Without a doubt Apple is making continuous progress with every release. Even my iPad 2 is happily running iOS 9.2! Of course the better the device the better the result. in my case, everything from an iPhone 4s, 5, 5s to a couple of 6 are now happily running the latest 9.2. Yay!

Except I was just saying everything I listed was improved. Context matters.

But what you seem to forget is that we're not talking about 7 or 8 which were feature loaded releases with no promises of performance improvements. We are talking about 9, a release that is semi devoid of new features, but had significant promises in improved performance and stability.

And personally I do remember the early days of both 7 and 8... Well actually I remember the early days of 4,5,6,7,8 and of cause 9. 9 has been the worst out of all of them for me. I can cope with slow releases if there are a lot of new features. iOS 9 feels like iOS 6 in terms of feature, however, iOS 6 performed better than iOS 5 on my 3GS and a iPad 2.

Context does matter, but your post simply said "Yeah, but everything has been improved between 6.1 and 9.2." and didn't seem to tie to any particular items (even though you mentioned a few in an earlier post, it didn't seem that this comment was specifically connected to just those items, especially the way it was worded).

I meant everything was improved about those items. I couldn't go back if only for the improvements in the apps I use that are tied to the OS.

Also, I like the newer UI. iOS 6 looks so ancient.

And it seems like iOS 8 and/or 7 have been worse for many (and seemingly many more) others. Yes, on a pure essentially literal level of it, it's certainly unfortunate that Apple didn't fully live up to the marketing and that things in some cases for some people have gotten worse, but in the overall sense the release doesn't seem to be all that different then what the past few releases were like (again, even if it was supposed to be) and in some ways better as well as far as stability and functionality go for many. Again, it's not that it can't be better or shouldn't be better, it's more that it's not that shocking or surprising and generally not as bad as some make it out to be (and perhaps it's really that bad for someone, but that's really based on their own usage, devices, and experiences and doesn't mean that it translates like that to others).

I meant everything was improved about those items. I couldn't go back if only for the improvements in the apps I use that are tied to the OS.

But I'm sure you wouldn't mind the responsiveness that was there prior to iOS 7 (in the sense of it simply applying just that aspect of it to what iOS is now).
