So by close of 2015 the devices that support this will be:

iPad Air 2
iPad Air 3
iPad Mini 4
iPhone 6S (Maybe)
iPhone 6S+
Devices that support full split-view yes.

Add the original air, mini 2 and mini 3 for slide-over and PiP

Not to mention that this also allows video to be played in the background and while on the lock screen...

Ooh cool I didn't know that. I have a jailbroken Air 2 and there's a tweak I have installed for YouTube that allows background audio so I'm glad it's coming to stock iOS.

Cool thanks!
So if you hit the Play button, does the keyboard and slide-over go away?
Yes, unfortunately. I can't say it's the same on iPad Air 2, but I'm assuming it is since SlideOver acts kind of like Control Center (in full screen apps, there's even the little arrow that makes you slide twice), thus pausing other activities.
What also does not work is having PIP and accessing the Videos app using SlideOver. Tried that, black screen. :)

Having split screen on my Note2 I can say that I rarely used it. I think some people might find usage in it, but its one of those features that's nice to have, but not always really practical. I don't think many people will use it after the "newness" of it wears off.

Still no multi-user account or "kid" mode though...sigh.

I was hoping to see that but still lacking in iOS9. Hopefully in iOS9.1 then :(

Picture in picture and slide over is available in iPad Air and latest minis though. They might be enough for some people. Others might want the full split screen, then they'll need air 2.

I love to get the PIP and Slide over on my iPad mini2. Ofcourse i would also love to get full split screen but if it's not available for my mini2 (because of processor, RAM probably) then it can't but still odd to get Slide over and PIP then.

Also doesn't the 70:30 slide over feature still keep both apps open side by side? Is the only difference with split screen the fact that it's 50:50?

It's not only a matter as of size. The 70/30 seems to be partly interactive (only one of the two is actively working). See also the explanation from lint2015.

People seem to be confused by the Slide Over multitasking (supported on all iPads), and the proper Split View multitasking (only supported on iPad Air 2).

In Slide Over multitasking, the secondary app swipes in to cover 30% of the screen, but the primary app is not resized automatically. Instead, the app is dimmed and behaves the same as if you switched to the secondary app completely on iOS 8 - you can't interact with the primary app while it's dimmed.

In Split View multitasking, you can have two apps side-by-by side in either 50:50 or 70:30 split (there was a rumour of 75:25 split too, but I don't think that made it in). This is proper multitasking mode and the 70:30 split in this mode is completely different to the one in Slide Over - both apps are active and the larger app is resized to 70% of the screen, not partially obscured and dimmed.

Thanks for the explanation. I also thought it seemed that the older iPad Air and iPad mini 2,3 also got full interactive features with Slide Over and PIP but it seems it doesn't which is a shame but probably has to do with the lack of RAM and processing power then.

So on my mini 2 I can open a video into PiP and it will play while you interact with the main app. You can then pull the slide over out and interact with an app in the side while the video continues.

You can't interact with both the app in slide over and the main application at the same time though.

On the air 2 you can open up a video into PiP, then pull an app out into slide over and have the video going with two live apps running.

From the looks of it you can get the 70:30 view and PiP on the air, mini 2 and mini 3.

The Air 2 gets the full split screen.
Are you sure? I though you couldn't get any split screen at all on anything other than air 2?

In the keynote they made it look like you can drag things over in slide over.

Can you drag and drop in slide over without split screen? For example can you drag a photo into an email?

I'm also curious - how would others use their new multitasking split screen?

Hmm let's ask e.g this user or this one if he can check if that is possible with Slide over on e.g. iPad Air or iPad mini2.

I'm also curious - how would others use their new multitasking split screen?

I would use e.g. WhatsApp/iMessage (30%) next to e.g. browser (70%), e-mail.
I wish the video also kept playing with Slide Over or PIP but according to this post that isn't the case unfortunately :(. But looking at this post the video keeps playing in PIP modus? What is it?

But looking at the Apple iOS9 preview site PIP has the option to continue playing the video and still work in a different app (e.g. E-mail) "While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display. Tap to open a second app, and your video continues to play — even while you use the other app. So keep watching your favorite TV show while you reply to the email that just came in."

It seems 'Slide Over' doesn't have this option.
