The highlighted word will be automatically entered if you just swipe the next word. So the only time you need to select a word using a tap is if the highlighted word isn't the one you want. And if the word you want isn't in the three options, simply backspace and try again.

So, the best way to type is to always look at the highlighted word and swipe without looking at the keyboard. Tap or backspace as required.

Aside: Another trick is to position the cursor at the end of a word and swipe to replace the previous word with a new one.

Yes.... But Swype predicts what the next word is and gets better as you use it more. The only way to see what the next word that is predicted is to click on the word of hit space. Of course I can just keep swiping, as I am doing now. I will say touchpal is very accurate and I am starting to like this more then the SWYPE keyboard.

One question, does it automatically add new words and can you edit ones that are a mistake?

I was being told that ai.type had a swipe feature.
It seem that it doesn't work on an iPad mini (2) on iOS8.1?

I see quite a lot of reviews about Swiftkey, Touchpal, Swype and Adaptxt but not much reviews on Path Input which i really like and doesn't need full access (like Adaptxt and Swiftkey) in order to work great.

I really like my Path Input app however unfortunately i'm using the iPhone app which i bought a while ago on iOS7 but the app isn't universal. So i need to buy the iPad version separately. I will use the iPhone app on my iPad mini now but the keys are a bit small. Path Input does support a lot of languages including Dutch. I hope Touchpal would soon also add Dutch language support so I could also try out that one.

Well for me the improvements are huge: Dutch language added!! :) I love it how SwiftKey seamlessly switches from Dutch to English without the press of a button! It seems to know, even within a sentence, that I want to use the words from a different language :)

How come that there is still no animation for the moment the 3rd party keyboard appears? It just appears out of nowhere. There is only an animation when it disappears.

SwiftKey just got updates. Any improvements guys?

One of the two landscape bugs have been fixed. The bug where if you type more lines than is visible, the bottom line is beyond the bottom edge of the text window has been fixed. When you reach the bottom of the text window, the text now scrolls up, so you can see the bottom line of text when typing in landscape.

The bug where the keyboard appears in the centre of the screen instead of the bottom has not been fixed. When you enter a text field, you are normally holding the phone in portrait and the portrait keyboard appears. When you rotate the screen to landscape, the landscape keyboard appears in the centre of the screen instead of the bottom. The only work around is to change keyboards while in landscape and change back to Swiftkey.

Gesture typing (like Swype) now works on the iPhone 5S. It works both in landscape and portrait.

I'm also trying out both Swiftkey and Adaptxt. Haven't updated the Swiftkey app yet. My clumsy fingers are still getting used to the swipe/glide feature.

TouchPal does automatically add words. I don't think that you can edit the list of custom words currently.

Of course TouchPal automatically predicts words as you type. Three such words appear above the keyboard and the centre one, in blue, is the one that will be typed when you A) start to type another word, B) press space, or C) tap the highlighted word itself.

But you don't see the next word it predicted until you press current word or press space unlike SWYPE

Swipe got an update. Awesome. New languages and ????? What a huge ripoff. Maybe on Android but on iOS - sad and expensive

It seems Swype finally updated their keyboard with a total of 21 languages (added 16 languages). It's a bit strange that you can't see it in the description in the App Store or their website which languages they added.
Hopefully they add that soon. I have seen on Twitter that e.g. Dutch has been added.

What do you mean with 'and ?????' and why is it a huge ripoff?

No new stuff apart from languages, no shortcuts, still slow and difficult to change languages fast. Others - for free - are way ahead. Some even are heading for update number 4. An app that charges for its use should have at least some support and be on top of features list

----------

And yes dutch has been added

SwiftKey has other bugs on the iPad Mini. If you flip from portrait to landscape and back to portrait, the keyboard will not be flush with the bottom of the screen. It is up a little from the bottom.

Thanks for the update in regards to the Swype keyboard.

I think i will stick with Path Input then. It works great and has had quite a few updates and works pretty great. I only hope that a universal app would be released instead of separate apps.

I now even use the Path Input iPhone app on my iPad mini2 which works (also for swiping, which isn't possible with Swiftkey on the iPad) pretty well although the keys are bit small.

After using TouchPal and SWYPE I am finding TouchPal better. The only issue is I don't know what words it adds ... Especially if something is incorrect and you cannot see custom dictionary. Also you have to select word you swiped or press space to see next word suggestion unlike other swipe keyboards

Please post photos of what you mean. I'm actually not clear what exactly you are talking about.

Look at the photo. I swiped "at" and until I press at or space you didn't see the word "the" ..

The Swype keyboard shows you the next word as soon as you swype.

iOS 8 Custom Keyboard Megathread

You click it and it brings up a whole list of them.

Works for me. In TouchPal in press and hold the smile face down. If you are referring to SWYPE, there is only one.

These should all get better with updates, as stated, Android apps have had a lot more time to mature...

I've given up. I tried swift key but every time I try it I am let down when it only works half the time.

I am not sure if the problem is with the app or the OS, but 3rd party keyboards are honestly screwing around with my iPhone. They sometimes don't cause the keyboard to appear when they should. For example, I swipe down to trigger spotlight, but the keyboard doesn't slide up as it should. I have to go into another app (like notes), change the active keyboard back to the stock Apple keyboard to fix this.

I find that when I am in keyboards like swiftkey, clips or text-expander, I can't change keyboards by holding down on the keyboard icon. Instead, I have to keep tapping on it until I cycle to the correct keyboard. Also, the keyboard isn't consistent; different keyboards show up at different times, which means more time wasted when I have to reselect the desired keyboard.

Because of this, I am sticking with the stock Apple keyboard for now. Which is a shame, because Swiftkey does seem more accurate and responsive overall, but I just can't stand the bugs.
