It would be nice to get your fill through the iWork Suite though.

No argument from me, it would be lovely if iWorks actually...ya know...worked!

I mean, when I bought Pages, i expected there to be some limitations due to the size of the device, but after using the iWorks suite for a little while I'm just so frustrated all the mountain of things that it can't do. Forget importing from MS Word, iPages doesn't even have full support for the desktop version of Pages!

I love my iPad, but pages is nothing but a gigantic disappointment.

I think you're right on with those predictions. Only question is...when will it be released.

I really want to get the iPad now but I know that a new one is right around the corner. Here are my predictions of what the iPad 2 is going to be like.

1. Facetime-The new iPad has almost 100% of having a front camera of Facetime

2. 1.5-2.0 GHz A4 or A5 Processor-The 1 GHz has great speed but with iOS 4 and a 2GHz Andriod Phone on the horizon the iPad 2 is going to need a speed boost.

3. 512 MB-1 GB of RAM-With multitasking coming to the iPad this fall and all the new apps to come in the future (including iOS 5) Also the iPhone 4 has 512 MB of ram so it only makes sense to have the iPad following in it's footsteps.

4. Retina Screen-Obviously Apple couldn't put 326ppi into the iPad, I think Apple will go to 1336X1080 for a 1080p resolution.

5. Gyroscope- There is a slot for one on the current iPad it only makes sense for it to be on the iPad 2.

6. Same design but lighter- It iPad design now is good and I like it but I wish it could be lighter.

7. Double the Storage- Apple will drop the 16 GB and introduce a 128GB model.

8. No price drops and a few minor tweaks

What do you think the iPad 2 is going to be like?
Comment Below!

Right around the corner? Lets say April 2011 AT EARLIEST...

1. Yes, I'd agree that's very likely.
2. Wow, umm, how about no? The heat would be ridiculous, and the 1Ghz chip running a mobile OS is perfectly fine, you don't need anymore. It doesn't need a speed boost.
3. 512MB MAXIMUM. They wouldn't jeopardise their iPhone 5 sales/specs being released by giving more than that.
4. 1080p? Good luck with that.. You'd be paying about $500 more.
5. Yes, I presume it will also be in the upcoming iPod Touch refresh.
6. Probably same design.. Lighter? doubt it.
7. 128GB is unlikely, it's a bit high to ask for.
8. Yeah, as normal.

2048 x 1536, are you nuts?!

I don't get how so many people can seriously expect the 'retina technology' from the iPhone 4 to be implemented in the iPad within one generation. 4x the resolution? Are you nuts? That would make it 2048 x 1536!

Not only would such a high resolution be a nightmare for developers (they're only just getting to grips with designing icons etc. for the current screen), it would seriously raise the computing power needed for 3D games and graphics. iPad-specific apps must run in native resolution, including 3D games, or they'll look like garbage. A game like N.O.V.A. HD or Mirror's Edge would suffer a huge frame rate hit because the hardware wouldn't be able to handle a game at such a high resolution.

So put a more powerful chip in, you say? Design cost and production cost. You'd need a far more powerful chipset. Not gonna happen in one generation.

The A4 chip can only run the iPhone 4 with its retina display so well because its resolution is less than that of the iPad. I doubt the A4 would perform as well with considerably more pixels to power. Carrying this same 'technology' (it's not really a new tech, but rather just a really high pixel density) to the iPad simply isn't feasible. Not for a few years, anyway.

The LCD manufacturers only just managed to get this super-high density into a smartphone screen. It'll be a long time before they crack it for anything larger. Also bear in mind that the iPhone didn't see a resolution increase until its forth generation. I can't see the iPad getting a similar upgrade until... 3rd generation at the earliest.

Anyway, rant over. It just pains me that so many people have high hopes for this 'retina display' to make it into the iPad so quickly.

Although the specs are inevitable and will keep getting better over the years, I doubt many of which you listed will be here next year. Anyhow, I'm not trying to be rude here but you would have probably saved a lot of time in searching iPad 2 predictions than creating a new thread - many like these already exist and have many user inputs as well.

6. Same design but lighter- It iPad design now is good and I like it but I wish it could be lighter.

This item, combined with all the others is hilarious. Double the storage, add a camera, add a gyroscope, but make it weigh less!!!!!!!!!

Honestly i don't see the iPad 2 coming before 2012. Even if Apple could bring it to market, it would be unfair to first adopters to obsolete them so quickly. But no doubt many fanbois would buy a new iPad every week if that's how often they came out.
iPhone and iPod get updated every year. Macs every 7 months to a year

if there is no viable iPad alternative in the near future, I don't see how apple would even have a need to do a refresh until competition gets stiffer.

When I said 1080p I meant 1336X1080.
Not much of a bump over 1024X768

Actually, it's nearly double the number of pixels:

1336x1080 = 1,442,880
1024x768 = 786,432

As others have noted on this and other threads, there will be significant consequences in cost, weight, operating temperature, and battery life for that. I also can't imagine a display with specs like that available in quantity anytime soon, for any price.

Not to rant on this, and I'm certainly not singling you out (this comes up all the time) but seriously - my iPhone 4 and my lame, sorry-a**, already obsolete iPad are sitting side by side, and EVERYTHING on my iPad is easier to read than ANYTHING on my iPhone. Why are we even talking about this?

Zero, zero, zero benefit to doubling iPad screen res any time soon, and downsides out the wazoo. My prediction: no no no no way, not even in 2012.

Whew! I feel much better now, thanks.

I know. wasn't it so frustrating to find this out. Understand it wouldn't be a full version, but it can't even import basic word docs correctly.

I am in a predicament
A few people have suggesting that I should get the current iPad.
The iPad 2 is 9 months away and I am actually considering to get it now.
What do you think?

For the 10 year olds here hoping for Retina Display on the iPad, educate yourselves. Read this:

Given:

RAM and Processor upgrades
Gyroscope
Storage bump (128gb)
Camera (front facing only)

And with Mac OS 10.7 please. I'm really tired of having no useful desktop or customisation. Also slightly thinner black borders and definitely lighter. Oh, also please stop those bloody fingerprints!

I think Apple will release an iPad "1.5" laster this Fall that will have a front facing camera(maybe), 512MB of RAM, and get the iOS 4.0 update. The the real "next gen" version to be out next spring.

Why would it be Unfair? Technology moves on, and anyone who gets upset after buying an ipad today and seeing a new model 12 months from now is an idiot.

You buy it today if it meets your needs today, and even if 2011 a new model comes out so what.

I'll wait for the iPad 63 with '3D Holographic Pure Retina x360 Display' that transforms into a maid robot that can piggy back you to the pub with it's scramjet engine feet.

It's just around the corner.

On the screen res front.

I could see the screen res staying the same, perhaps till iPad v3

Anything others than doubling the screen res from 1024x768 to 2048x1536 would wreck almost all apps out there now and all the ones that are going to be written over the next 12+ months.

Doubling the res would allow all apps to look fine by just pixel doubling them.

Due to the way LCD's scale (which is VERY badly) anything else would result in all past iPad apps either running in a small window on screen, or looking terrible due to their bitmapped graphics. (Games and Apps)

As 2048x1536 would be a lot of pixels to shift about (for a game) I think we may need to wait for something like a 2Ghz CPU and meatier GPU before this will happen, and for that to come together, could be (wild stab in the dark) another 2 to 3+ years.
