Oh come on, most people are only interested in what is on the screen of the device.

People are all going to have their different opinions but that statement isn't true.

Not everyone necessarily thinks the same way I do, nor do they necessarily think the same way you do.

Have you got any data to suggest more people use their iPads and iPhones without cases than those that do?

No need to get into the weeds like that. Even if most people use a case, you don't know that it's because they only care about the screen. They might prefer to use it without a case but be too risk averse. They might use it without a case if they had Apple Care or simply had more money. Who knows?

People do care about the details of their devices.

I'd imagine a big reason for cases is to prevent breaking the device for most, yes. Not everybody is a phone enthusiast though like we have on this site, and I think you'd be surprised how many users simply don't care too. Its obviously difficult to quantify either way, but some care and some don't.

Personally I use a case for 2 reasons.

1. I drop my devices more often than I should, I'm human it happens and I have young kids who knock things off the arms of chairs and sofa's.
2. I find without a case the devices are slippery and not exactly pleasant to hold too. I prefer a slim case to give it grip. In regards to the iPad a case doubles up as a stand which I use every single day. This also protects the screen if things are placed on top of it or when it is put into a bag.

I am not the sort of person that sits and marvels at the design of my iPad or iPhone, or cares if I am seen using it by others.

To show you how utterly useless the iPad is compared to a mac , I had to do a basic simple email but i wanted to copy the email and put it into a text message

I gave up after 5 minutes of back and forth , wouldn't let me paste the simple line , bizarre

I love the iPad for light gaming and surfing the net , tbh it's not much good at anything else

Disappointed in the potential of the hardware held back by garbage software and a pitiful OS

I think this (keyboard) case discussion is becoming a little sterile as everyone looks at it from their point of view and many just disregard that other have different uses of their devices and different life situations, and that's therefore just a matter of priorities, as I have said earlier.
I for instance use a silicon case on my phone, because I happen to drop it periodically from my pocket.
Instead I use my tablets naked at home as I don't drop them, I have no kids and pets at home, I find the grip perfectly fine and I want to enjoy fully the comfort of the device when I use them in my hands to read of to watch something.
I use the mini in bed, and it's fine for reading an ebook, but way too small for reading a Word or PDF document.
When I use my iPads on the go I use an Apple case (smart folio, smart keyboard or magic keyboard) as they are the lightest on the market but I have a laptop pocket on my backpacks so they are protected. If I ever bring them in a more "dangerous" environment (like a park, beach etc) I'll use extra protection, including the combo touch.

But for some people those more protective cases make more sense as:
- they are on the go all the time with their devices (I use a 2lbs laptop on the go most of the time)
- they have kids or pets at home
- they use the device on a stand most of the time and don't use it for reading etc.
- the worry that they could drop them would kill the pleasure of using the device
- they simply tend to drop their devices more often
- they want to put them in a normal backpack mixed with other stuff
- etc. etc. etc.

These are all valid reasons which change the priorities (and even just one of them is enough), and that's fine.... Just as wanting to enjoy the light weight at home is valid reason to prefer no case o just magnetic ones.

While I don't use a case for my phone or laptop, I think the iPad needs one most of the time even if purely for usability. If I'm not using it in the Magic Keyboard then it's going in the Smart Folio so it's gripper, and so I can stand it up. It's not a complete experience without one.

Unlikely, given he has a pro, he was probably referring to the Smart keyboard folio https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...ration-and-ipad-air-5th-generation-us-english

Yes that one. I did consider that keyboard too, really like the slimness but no backlit keys and rubber keys while holding the ridiculous price was a deal breaker.

I would rather just use a setup like this instead. Full size keyboards are still more comfortable to type on and mechanical boards are far better in every way. I'm actually considering going this route. I already have multiple stands for the ipad, so I would just get another slim mechanical keyboard and it's still cheaper than any overpriced keyboard case out there.

I absolutely agree that the Apple keyboards are overpriced and the reason why I have them all is because I have bought all of them either on sale or used.
I use the Smart Keyboard Folio sometimes when I know I might have to type but not much, and not in the dark, instead of the Smart Folio (no keyboard) or the MK.
I would never buy them at full price.
I got the Smart Keyboard Folio for $60, the Magic Keyboard for $100, the Logitech Combo for $100, and the Folio for $40.
I spent more for the 12.9 got the MK for $230 on sale, but still way less than the Apple price.

Wouldn’t you rather just have one keyboard to use and get used to over time? I always see keyboard covers on sale so I agree, buy them when on sale because they are all overpriced, just some more than others.

Okay, but you took this out of context and totally glossed over the reason I posted it in the first place. It wasn't about storage or price, but Tim's viewpoint or belief that the iPad Pro could replace a traditional computer for many people.
I wasn't glossing over anything. I was merely making a correction.

That's strange! It's really simple to copy the text of an email and paste it into Messages app.
Maybe you were trying to copy more than the body of the email?

Interesting! But what would you do when going out of home or traveling?

Maybe a subjective correction, because the fact is, the iPad has replaced a laptop for many people, just as he predicted. I am one of them.
I glad it has worked out for you that way (as it did my brother). I corrected your statement because I didn't want people thinking Apple still gives you a measly 32gb of storage for $1099!

I would do what I'm doing now, just leave my iPad in its case. I don't see a point in changing cases. Also I don't travel anymore because of coronavirus

This would be like, wouldn't you rather have 1 iPad or 1 laptop etc and use it for everything. I am a multi-device person, I am no minimalist. So I have many laptops and iPads of different sizes for different uses. And also several keyboard covers... I guess everyone is different on this...;)

I'm a multi-device person too. I just find changing keyboards all the time for one device to be too much work. And if one paid regular price for these keyboard cases, they would easily spend 1K just on keyboard cases. More than what most spend on their ipad.

That's the advantage of magnetic accessories, changing keyboards is no work at all....

And I suspect that's why Apple made them that way. Ease of swapping accessories means higher likelihood of people owning multiple copies of them. Notice how the Apple Watch has bands which are easily swappable, iPhone has magsafe which makes cases / wallet / charger easily swappable, iPad has smart / Magic Keyboard.
