A big reason why the ipad isn't good to use without a case is because the edges on the ipad are razor sharp. You can easily cut yourself and not sure why anyone would want to use it without a case. Very uncomfortable to use without a case as the edges dig into your hands. Apple needs to fix this.
“Razor sharp“? “Easily cut yourself”? If this were true there would have been endless media coverage and Apple would be facing multiple product injury lawsuits.

Tone down the drama, Elmer FUD!

This is the same guy who claimed the Magic Keyboard case magnets were so strong some people had to use a hammer to get their iPad free... lol.

Typing this on a razer sharp 14PM and thankfully haven't cut my fingers yet.

The front lip of my work-provided MBP 15" is uncomfortably sharp. But I think that's the only Apple product I've felt that about.

While there is a fair amount of overlap between devices, here how it breakdowns for me:

Primary Uses
  • iPhone: Communication, Navigation, and Camera
  • iPad: Reading and Markups
  • MacBook: Productivity Apps (MS Office/iWork) and Multi-tasking
I am an average consumer level user that tends to buy base configurations (e.g. iPad 10, M2 MBA). I see little reason to use my iPad as a laptop replacement. There is not much advantage to me. I paid $1050 for the M2 MBA and $420 for the iPad 10. A 12.9 in iPad Pro with 256GB storage and Magic Keyboard would cost about the same.....maybe more. Of course, everyone's needs are different. For example, I am not an artist or creative, so my iPad is really a secondary device.

Very good point. I paid $800 for my m1 MBA and $400 for my iPad mini 6, a 12.9 with a Magic Keyboard would be more cash and not as versatile. But depending on use case a 12.9 cellular with smart keyboard might be more practical.

I am one of those weird ones. When we go anywhere for more than a night I have my 2 phones, our 3 tablets, our two laptops etc. Ha ha. Never know what I want to fart around with. If I have to write, I want everything with me.

I've been thinking on this question again and realize that my original "no, not for me" answer isn't correct. The reasons I gave were really an answer to why my 12.9 iPad Pro can't be my only computing device, not whether it could supplant my laptop as my mobile platform. I'd now say that it could replace my laptop as my mobile platform, but I'd still need another computer - be it laptop or desktop - for some functions it can't handle (e.g., format disks, rip DVDs, update USB connected devices, etc.).

my iPad can't replace my laptop yet: It's just not flexible enough.
This is one of the biggest hesitancy’s on my end about getting just an iPad for a “computer” - how limited the magic keyboard is on viewing options.

I will especially miss folding the case over on top of itself, like I currently can do with my Air 2 Logitech keyfolio. Having said that, I also think it’ll be fun to use the iPad unprotected when I take it off the stand.

I sold my M1 iMac and M1 MacBook Pro awhile back and now use my M1 12.9” iPad Pro as my only personal computing device. It could almost replace my work-issued MacBook Pro, but would make Teams and Zoom meetings more cumbersome. And I am a Product Manager, and the product I manage is a web-based platform that is only compatible with Chrome and Edge, so I can’t do any acceptance testing on my iPad.

From what I am understanding, the issues with Chrome and Edge will be ending in the near future. Apple has allowed Chromium native on iOS, or will be soon. We will have full edge on iOS soon, and I cannot wait. Full ad blocking capability.

If you are referring to the EU imposing sideloading, that won't come before the fall and rumors also say that maybe limited to Europe, with Apple blocking the possibility ouside Europe.

They're probably referring to the fact that Google and Mozilla are working on fully fledged browsers for iPad that would break the current rules, leading the rumour mill to believe the current rules forcing third party browsers to use Webkit (ie Safari reskins) might be lifted for the next iPadOS.

If true, gamechanger for some of the most annoying iPad quirks for me. Yet, still a software parity question which is more a question of the developers.
That one feature where users can stream multiple audio sources simultaneously is going to receive a huge applause from the audience.

And I think the web cam support is addressing those who purchased the Apple Studio Display and cannot use it with the iPad.

I just bought the Logitech touch keyboard for my 10th gen iPad. I am typing on it right now. Makes my iPad much more useful. I love the keyboard for typing and the stand makes for a useful tool as well when we are in places with no tv in the night time we can watch tv without holding onto our iPads. All in all a great product.

Hmm, as stage manager matures, and if the next iPhone does sport usb-c, it makes a case for the iPhone to also support external monitor support.

Crap...did I just describe Dex for iOS? o_O
Yes! I recently did an experiment for a month trying to turn my iPhone into my only device. The short of it—external monitor support through the lightning cable (requiring transcoding of output) stinks. I could sorta get it all to work with an Apple TV attached to the monitor, but with issues. USB-C to a monitor will, hopefully, be a better experience!
