Soon? Vision Pro will not be as popular as the iPad anytime soon especially with its price tag…however, I am on board with it being a laptop and iPad replacement. Heck, it has me rethinking about whether or not I should buy the rumored 14” iPad to be released in 2024 (or the OLED iPad Pro).
If there’s an Apple Vision Pro, I’m assuming there will be lesser featured, lower cost Apple Vision.

i brought my M2 MBA to the beach today after work. Never touched it once, only used my iPhone basically.

In fact, everybody used their iPhone or Android phone instead of a laptop or a tablet.

The iPhone is the real laptop replacement.

For work, a large external display is much better than a tiny little laptop display, so might as well better use a desktop for that.

iPhone is great at the beach not enough for me back at the hotel.

You'll change your mind after you're blown away by your first deeply immersive experience with a spreadsheet ...
I can imagine this guy next to me cackling manically to himself while wearing his Vision Pro, and I imagine he's watching some super-immersive content, but he's actually just getting his rocks off tinkering with Vlookup in 3D...

No issue with your post, but seeing a picture like this, doesn't it feel at least a bit silly that the ideal setup in 2023 would be two devices that look basically exactly the same? They look redundant, and the combined weight of them isn't anything you would ever shove in your bag.

This picture really sums up the state of Apple's iPad and laptop lineup at the moment. Confusing and annoying.

Surely it's high time for Apple to come up with a hybrid device.

If you can plug a single USB-C cable into your laptop and it turns into a desktop anyway, what's the point of a desktop?

Way more ports, much cheaper and no thermal throttling. In some stuff, my 13" Intel MBP 2020 (10nm) with 4 TB can beat my M2 MacBook Air when it starts thermal throttling.

The only advantage that laptops have is that you can bring it outside, but most people use their smartphone outside rather than a laptop.

Shut yo mouth, M series are so powerful they can make the earth spin the other way if all powered on at once. 🤣

My 14" MacBook Pro never throttles. Plus there are docking stations or monitors with just as many ports as a desktop.

But I doubt your 13" Intel MBP beats your M2 Air even when fully throttled. Even if it does, at that level of noise, is it worth it?

An advantage of laptops isn't just that you can take it outside (lol?), but that you can take them to places that don't have a good desk setup and get some work done. There are plenty of cases where I need to use this laptop to get some real work done, perhaps on the couch, various locations at work that aren't my desk, hotel rooms, cafes, you name it.

To then plug in one USB-C cable and it functions as a desktop is a no-brainer.

Ever used the M1 iMac? That thing is slower and 10 times louder (I'm not kidding, go run Cinebench on both side by side) than a 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro.

I toyed with the idea of going iPad + desktop, but there are too many situations at work and otherwise where I needed the laptop.

The only people who I see "work" in cafe's and stuff like that are students who are working like this because they have no choice.

Most people that use computers for work do it in an office with 1 or multiple external displays, not a tiny laptop screen.

Maybe you need to expand your horizons. There are plenty of people who do work from locations that aren't their main desks. And I guarantee you, they're doing work, not "work".

Don't forget writing the next great screenplay at starbucks every day...for the past 10 years. ha ha. I kid.

Haha, nah I work in IT. I wish I could downsize to an iPad or something like that, but I need a lot of windows open side by side, specialist software, and fairly often I've got to work at different locations for hours at a time with no desk setup. Anything less than the 14" would be pretty annoying.

100 percent. I agree with ya. I do like my new 10th gen iPad with Logitech keyboard though. It's a much better experience than I thought it would be. I am using my dell 14" 2 in 1 90 percent of the time I am mobile though.

100% agree. The solution would be for M1/M2 iPads to run Mac OS as an option + a second USB-C port.

This would make my MacBook Pro redundant.

I am a lawyer and have to work on daily basis outside my main office.
Although I much prefer my MBP, the lack of cellular conectivity forces me quite often to use the iPP 12,9 on the go.

that's another artificial limitation Apple puts on Macs to keep selling both Macbooks and iPads
