What I found most odd is there appears to still be no option for in-store pickup on launch day. Frustrating as I usually pickup in store so I can save the sales tax.

Nice thing about my 1TB being delayed is I get the chance to see what WWDC brings to know if I should swap that down to 512GB and shave off $360.
I know. I've always preferred store pick-up for Apple products. TBH I use it as an excuse to buy something else ?haha. And today it was not available apart from some pick-up points across the city.

Yep and it deters you from returning the item as well, no?
Haha probably. I’ve returned engraved items at Apple before but figured if I’m spending $3,400CND on this thing (with the keyboard, AppleCare+ and stuff), I might as well make it look less appealing to steal…although, that’s probably wishful thinking anyway.

Anyone who wants to steal it can simply put a case over it and call it a day. “Look mom, got a new iPad!” At least they’ll forever have my name on it? Haha

You might be in for a disappointment using the Barclay Apple card. I did some looking into this as I have the Barclay card too and it is set to switch over to a regular credit card in the next week. Apple often doesn't charge a card until ship time, which for these iPads is after the Barclay card stops giving you 3% back on Apple purchases.

So for that reason I went ahead and got the new Apple Card and sure enough so far they've only charged me for the Apple Pencil 2 and not the iPad yet which isn't supposed to shop to me until June. So I am pretty certain I would have not gotten the 3% cash back on the iPad with the Barclay card.

Is Apple stocking these at the stores? I thought I read a post that said you wouldn't be able to buy it and pick it up from the store on launch day. I could be mistaken though...

12.9” Space Grey 5G 2TB ordered less than 5 minutes after ordering opening in the UK - delivery date 21-27 May.

I notice all the higher storage versions 1TB and 2TB are now back to late June delivery, but smaller storage versions are still in May delivery. Looks like most people are ordering the high storage versions

Space Gray 11" 256GB (Wi-Fi): May 21-27
Space Gray 12.9" 1TB (Wi-Fi): May 21-28

Shipping to North Carolina. Had a few issues adding iPads to my bag on desktop web so switched over to the iOS app after a few failures. Placed the order around 8:10 AM or so.

A big part of why I was upgrading was the 16 gigs of ram which only came on the 1 and 2tb versions. So maybe a lot of other people had the same idea? Also good chance that apple maybe produced fewer of those off the bat because usually they sell less of them. I suspect in prior generations the 128 and 256 models sold more because they were cheaper. I would have just gotten the 512 if not for the ram.

I seriously doubt it due to supply constraints and trying to reduce the number of people visiting the store due to Covid. I have a feeling the stores won’t have them until June-July.

Weird. Here in the states all have a late June-early July date on the 12.9 except the 2TB WiFi only models. Those are first week of June. Otherwise no May 12.9s left.

My thoughts as well, they produced less and demand was slightly higher than expected. As the 1TB model began to slip the next to go were the 512s and 128s. For a while, if you wanted an iPad in May, your options were 256 or 2TB.

This seems to be the case. It must be driven by the chip shortages and the reason why pre-orders are so far out from announcement and arrivals are so far out from actual hands on dates.

Normally, Apple would have two allocations (in simple terms and excluding stuff to resellers). They'd have the online order stream and the in store stream with each store getting allocation based on their predictions. Since there are shortages limiting to online only allows them to ensure they can prioritize these orders properly and end up with less stock slack (like a store having iPads in stock for a few days that aren't sold compared to online or other stores sold out). Could also be driven by COVID and not wanting 200 people long lines outside stores either.

I see it as due to the shortages as the "old" model was in place for AirTags.
