seeing as we're now only 3 weeks away from the end of april - do you think apple will even do pre-orders?

US pre-orders started march 12th for delivery/launch 3 weeks later...

it's gonna be a tight squeeze maybe?

Of course, that's assuming that there is a pre-order option in the UK.

An announcement about iPad availability at the event tonight is entirely plausible. I'm just looking at last year's 3.0 sneak peek video, and before they get into the meat of the the software stuff they talk about how many countries the iPhone is now in.

Given that the iPhone OS is just as much a part of the iPad as it is the IPhone now, why wouldn't they do a bit of trumpeting about the success of the Pad's launch and where/when it will be available next?

What makes you think they will bother will pre-orders. Or perhaps the late April date is actually a pre-order date, not an available date.

Like I said, I really can't see it happening but hope that it does.

On a side-note, looking around the internet over the past few days, at unboxing & other vids etc., why are people making such a big deal about the iPad's tendency to get grimy and icky with fingerprints etc.?

I understand that the screen and its coating are made of the same wonderful stuff the iPhone screens are made of. My iPhone screen can get very dirty but a few wipes later and it literally looks as good as the day I got it. (I do mean literally as in literally, there.)

Is there something so different about the iPad's screen?

Oh for god's sake, I just want one. We'll soon be writing disturbing iPad-related fan-fiction at this rate.

I'm one of those despicable UK (non-)waiters who took the plunge on eBay, but that was only yesterday and I won't believe in the iPad until I get it in my hands. Even then, what I really want is a UK 3GS model. I'll end up using the eBay one for jailbreaking, assuming it's not an empty box stuffed with newspaper, of course.

I'm thinking no mention at the event, then about a week later we'll hear that it will be released "somtime in May".

I agree regarding tonight's event; it's an iPhone OS event so no need to mention the iPad.

Let's not get too pessimistic; we do still have three weeks left in April for Apple to meet their deadline.

Personally I don't think we will see a delay, or if we do it will be a few days. Major product launches for big companies have to be organised months in advance and cannot be fiddled with at short notice. I have no doubt that the UK stock is already either en-route (by sea) or about to be...

I will honestly be gutted if we can't pre-order or reserve iPads before release, who wins when it's a scrum and half the crowd go home empty handed? Seriously, who wins?! Nobody, it sucks all round.

I win. 'Cause I'll be carrying a very large cricket bat and won't be going home empty handed...

Seriously though. I still can't believe we've not got a confirmed date and price yet for the UK. I hate to say it. But I think things are looking shaky for the end of April.

AHRHGHGHH

I dont care if i have to wait another month to buy it .... i just want to know how much i have to pay for it

Same.

I can honestly see the UK launch slipping to mid May, which is fine by me. I just want to know a price. Right now I'm super hyped for the iPad, genuinly think it looks quality and really do want one, but I'm not prepared to have my pants pulled down over the price. I'd like a 32GB 3G model and in my head have a price point I'd like to see it retail at, but if the eventual price goes above that then I won't be buying one.

My entire purchasing decision (and therefore my hype for the device) rests on the price point. Apple could save me alot of hassle and getting myself worked up by either announcing a price that I'm willing to pay, or announce one that I'm not and price me out of it. Right now though I'm in limbo.. wanting to buy one, wanting to buy into the hype but not at an unreasonable cost.

Wise words. There is a danger in further delay for Apple though. The hyper keen early adopters will Bundlebox or eBay, so the UK launch would fizzle out like the dampest of squibs.

You'll still buy one if it goes over that price.

As for the cost/availablility, it will be this weekend :)

If in 4 hours and 43 minutes there is no mention of the EU release date, I think we can safely say an April release is pretty unlikely.

I have a question, why are people looking at eBay to import early? have any of you looked at using a Mail/Parcel Forwarder in the US and using the address you get from them to order/pre-order your iPad? might work out to be cheaper IMO.

Agreed.

My local Apple store is in the Arndale shopping centre (Manchester), so I often wonder how they handle queues that have formed early - I'm guessing you'd have to queue outside one of the multiple entrances to Arndale and wait for security to open the doors, at which point it'd be a mad scramble to get to the actual store. I'm not the fragile type and am pretty athletic but I've no desire to get involved with that - I'd end up chinning somebody in the rush :)

Much prefer to order my 32gb 3G online, even if it involves a couple extra days of drumming my fingers.

agreed. I think we are looking at mid to late May.

Why all the negativity, does everyone think that Apple can't get their ducks in a row in 2 weeks? I think we'll hear an announcement today, Jobs likes to give his round-ups at these events and OS 4.0 will surely make its way onto the iPad come June/July as it gives them their second/third round of media coverage which will only boost sales.

A securing news is the fact that in the US, the apple stores keep getting ipad replenishments. So there at least are no production problems and there is a steady stream of import. Hopefully, they can pick up production enough to get enough ipads for europe in 3 weeks.

What time is the event?

and where can we see/ hear about it, other than twitter feeds???

:apple:Mike

Can imagine the scenes there, the security at the Arndale are incompetent enough at the best of times :p
