Was I the only one watching the iPad announcement? Uncle Steve specifically said that the iPad would NOT be locked to any carrier, and that you can insert any old micro sim from any carrier for it to work.
AT&T are the preferred network, and iPad will have a way for you to buy 3G credit directly, but that's a convenience feature. Any 3G iPad will work with any 3G network provided you can get a microsim.

VAT is still charged on a gift. There is no way currently to avoid paying VAT on an imported item that is coming through a non-passenger port, short of lying about the value.

The only way would be to buy it through a VAT registered company - then you can claim the VAT back on the import. However, the item needs to be purchased using company funds.

Been sniffing round ebay trying to get an ipad at a good price having no luck some crazy prices floating around! Also feels like a fair amount of rip off merchants as well!
why people don't post real pics is beyond me?

Almost £200 for the upgrade to 3G???
what are you smoking???

Ive got to go with

WIFI

16gb- £350-400

32gb- £440-490

64gb- £530-580

3G/WIFI

16gb- £430-480

32gb- £520-570

64gb- £610-660

So an extra £80 for 3G

and about £90 between the models, maybe more, maybe less.
Just specualtion, but based on the US prices and the current exchange rate I think its plausible

:apple:Mike

Are going to here anything today for the uk and rest of the world ? Or is big Stevethe:apple: going to tell us about another magical thing from the world of :apple: that is that magical we are going to have to wait 3 months for it as the fairies have run out of magic dust.:rolleyes:

I think we will get some news today.

I feel like ripping my hair out. It's like having a cck shoved up the bum. I need my iPhone to make sure it's not my code. Hurry up Apple, process my flipping dev payment again.

Ripping hair out is like anal sex? Ok....

Somthing tells me that you are assuming a knowledge / feelings of an experience that you have never had.

Come back when you've had first hand or should that be first hole experience and make that analogy ( if u dare ;) )

As for topic at hand, I am now truly resigned to the belief that if we do not hear an announcement by Friday, the next time we hear anything it will be about a delay till the end of May.

Oh and the poster that said there was no accessible slot for the 3G model, I highly doubt that. If that were indeed the case then you can forget the 3G model from appearing until carrier contracts were signed this side of the Atlantic. As they appear not, and as they made it clear when they announced the ipad that it was Sim Free it's unlikely there is 'no' sim slot.

Getting worried now with the lack of news. When i phoned the apple "any questions" line the other day and asked the guy for a date he said "November" and then corrected himself apologised and said "he was tired" and then told me "end of April"! I laughed it off at the time but am now getting worried, maybe he knew something?

I'm sure it was a just slip of the tongue I hope :-(

Don't worry about it, the guys you speak to there won't know any more than we do. Always the same to make sure nothing gets leaked.

Im fearing the worst - expecting Jobs to mention a 'slight' delay for us guys here in the UK.

Applemike your prices look good - hope they are spot on near to your estimates (not over!).

I've had three emails today from eBay stating:

"We'd like to let you know that eBay has ended an item you were bidding on because the item appears to have been listed without the account holder's permission. We are now restoring the account to its original owner. For privacy reasons, we can't share any further details regarding this member's account."

I'd forgotten I'd even bid on these! They were all different sellers.

You forgot that you bid on three iPads? Did you want to buy three iPads?

Those emails seem to say "account was hijacked by a scammer; anyone paying for an iPad in these auctions would have lost their money". Maybe you should just wait until the iPad comes to the stores in Britain. Or if you know someone going to the USA ask them to buy one for you.

No I didn't want three iPads. lol I was outbid quite quickly so bid on another.

You bid on something. Then if you get outbid, you can either increase your bid or you bid on another item.

When they remove the auction they email all bidders whether you're winning or not. That's how eBay works. :)

Those emails seem to say "account was hijacked by a scammer; anyone paying for an iPad in these auctions would have lost their money".

Yup. That's exactly what they say. Never had this before and so getting three in a day suggests that iPads are a current hotspot for eBay fraud to me.

Just sharing so people can be aware and tread carefully.

What time are the Apple announcements usually, is it normally around 6pm GMT?

Here's hoping and praying for some news!!

I think sterling prices will play closer to the euro than dollar. They still will not be exact translations as they never are. Euro pricing will be exact copy of Dollar structure.

For example

€499 = £449. 16gb
€599 = £529. 32gb
€699 = £619. 64gb

Yep, unfortunately it seems people are so desperate to get an ipad on ebay that they are forgetting the basics and not researching the seller.

Purchased plenty of high value goods on ebay over the years, several £3k and £4k+ products... never had a problem.
'buy the seller, not the item' ;)

Having discovered warranty work was only available in US for an iPad bought there & then someone here was in formed it was an Apple-wide warranty I phoned Apple CS again (on the iPad line). Got stonewalled this time: If faulty no help from a UK store 'cos not released yet-what about after UK release-she said I don't know that would depend on what the Apple genius said-I can't speak for them. That was no help whatsoever BUT I'm back with my doubt about warranty AND I really want the 3G anyway just in case.

Regarding fraud I think PayPal cover you for up to ?£500, but for me the risk is too great & I'm back to telling myself to be patient 'cos I don't really want the wifi one anyway. However, I still want one like yesterday & I AM a therapist!
Let's hope we hear today...

The OS 4 conference starts at 6pm UK time (BST).

Thanks. Gee it says something when this thread is nearly the largest thread in this sub-forum!

Ha ha yes we're catching up the "Delivered iPad" and Impressions Thread" on amount of post let's see if we can out post them ;-).
Maybe time for a sticky?

Apple would be mad to sell it at those prices. No way. And where do the 3G versions come into this? Because from the prices you go from a 64GB 3G version would be over £700! You can get a full Macbookfor that much (pretty much).

White Macbook is £816

iPad 64GB + 3G \ Wifi for = £699 / £709 (remember it's $829 in USA with $999 for Macbook)

Seems pretty reasonable to me pricing to me.

People are being 'WAY' too over optimistic in regards to iPad pricing. Expecting closer £ to $ pricing is a joke.

you probably could, but the iPad is a different device than the MacBook...

Now this thread has more post than the "Delivered iPad" and Impressions" thread. Come on apple give us news today.

Yes, a different device but the Macbook can do more, USB port for one. If the price is close to the price of a starter Macbook then I can't see as many people buying it when for a few pounds more you can get a full computer.
