I know the iPad isn’t for the original poster, but I’m the exact opposite. I’ve ditched my macbook pro completely for the iPad Pro. I am an artist & photographer who’s totally embraced the iOS only workflow. I sketch & paint on my iPad Pro using the Apple pencil. I ditched my dslr for the iPhone Pro which I feel is the best camera for street photography. I know it‘s not for everyone, but I love it. I can edit my photos using affinity photo. I can edit my 4K video using Luma Fusion. And then immediately post them. i can write my travel blog on my iPad. I can consume media. It does everything I need and more.

And our number grows. I too have totally replaced my MBP with my M1 iPP for both my Real Estate businesses and personal computing. The complete story of how is in the link in my signature, and also here in abbreviated form.

Wherever you draw the line with the SoC, their last couple of generations of high-end iPad SoCs seem ridiculously overpowered in view of the operating system limitations.

Personally, I have a 2017 iPad Pro with A10X and I sometimes find those laggy browsing certain websites. I welcome the performance improvement brought by A12 and higher chipsets.

Until things progress such that everything finishes instantaneously, I believe there’s always room for performance improvements.

*I* don't. As mentioned, I usually have my phone on me. However, it seems quite a few others do. They already knocked the iPad down to $330. Doubt they'd want to pass up more profits by removing the camera and stuff when it's already implemented.

I don't think they'll do it either. It was just my "wishful thinking" :D So, buying an Air for 599$ only for web browsing was (and still is imo) wasting money but basic iPad pushes me away with its old fashioned design. But maybe if not this year then maybe in 2023 it will get redesign as Air already has M1 chip.

Ha! The one I'd seen before is a woman asking her father how he was getting along on his new iPad. He says, "fine", and proceeds to use it as a cutting board, then rinses it off and puts it in the dishwasher. Her reaction is priceless

Gotta be in it to win it
Yes, there are clearly people who don't understand technology!

My spouse was remarking to me this morning how happy she is that I "made" her buy the m1 IPP with the magic keyboard. Based on her experience with the ipad 2, she didn't want another ipad. She manages her real estate business from the ipp in fact has largely abandoned her surface pro. Everybody's mileage will vary on this.

It's clearly just not the device for you. My experience with the 2021 12.9 has been good. I completely disagree regarding price for video apps - good options are there for less than $10. And I quite enjoy reading books on my 12.9, more so than using my Mini 6 or Kindle Oasis - and that includes reading in bed. Stick with a laptop, sounds like you'd be much happier.
Yes, it's been years since I had to convert a video format just to play it on my iPhone/iPad.
nPlayer, Plex, and a lot more are available.
I use all my devices (MacBook and iPad) daily, but the one I use the most is definitely my iPad Pro 11". Just wish I had purchased the larger model (12.9").

I have two clients who received Surface Pros from work, and hate them, preferring their iPad Pros.

I read all the time on an iPad mini 6. Sometimes for a whole day. It has the highest screen resolution of any Apple tablet at 326 PPI. I'm not sure why you think it is any worse than any other computer screen which regularly get used for 8+ hours at a time.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've used an 11' iPad Pro as my primary device for the last 4+ years (most used). Spending 6 hours straight reading on the weekend has hardly been a record for me lol. I used to double that sometimes (although not as much recently). For me, with a matte screen protector (getting rid of the glare) - my eyes can tolerate it indefinitely. My Samsung monitor is matte (32' curved). Wouldn't have it any other way. lol.

I'm very happy to have an iPad again. Last year and this year I tried to live without it and keep coming back. Now this is just for me. Others will have very different experiences.

Lol, barring meal and bathroom breaks, my record is 36+ hours (no sleeping, comics marathon reading). :p

Lol, I don’t think I’d want to go without an iPad for even 1 week. Hence, the multiple backups. :p

Absolutely amazing! Sounds wonderful. I have something to work towards now! And makes me feel better. I thought my 6+ hours was nuts. Hahaha. And agreed!!! After 2 "short" attempts to go without an iPad over the last few years, agreed.

I totally crashed afterwards. ???

When I was in college, I think my record was like 52 hours without sleep watching anime on the laptop. Alas, I'm a lot older now and my body can't handle as much abuse. ???

Yeah same here. I’ve been wanting to shed my MacBook at least from having to take with me for shoots. My Sony mirrorless with the lenses are already heavy so I wanted more portability with my editing tools. I’ve gone full iPad for things like drawing, graphics, and my photography and I’m as happy as can be that I went the route I did.

I’m a conductor and choirmaster. I keep all my sheet music on my 12" iPad. It’s my everyday companion. The display is easy on the eye even after hours. You can do light office stuff, score editing, video editing, audio recording. Of course, the respective apps might not be as full-fledged as the Mac versions, but it’s a great mobile experience.

That’s awesome! Do you use any music-specific apps for your work? I see many music related specialised apps and also sheet related ones that would be great to use for musicians.

Now, this will depend on the individual use case but I want to share my experience.

I bought iPad Pro 12.9 M1 6 months ago, I had the Air 2 previously. Initially I used to use it as a multimedia/Youtube device and was so impressed by the display and speakers. But as I bought the MacBook Pro 16, the use case of iPad Pro has completely diminished for me.

I mostly use my laptop and don't even pick up my iPad Pro anymore. I knew beforehand that iPad was severely limited in software. I don't know why this even exists anymore. Even the baseline MacBook Air has good value and could do heck more than the iPad.

Most of my gripes are with the software, it just cannot do much. It doesn't even have a good video player where I can watch local dolby vision content, the ones on the App Store are unnecessarily expensive. On my MacBook I can use Subler to convert an mkv DV file with 4-5 clicks and watch it on the QuickTime player. Everything is unnecessarily complicated on the iPad.

The files app is a hot mess as well on iPadOS 14. I haven't upgraded to the 15 as I have read posts about the battery life gone down to the *******. There isn't even the progress bar for copying/pasting files to and from the iPad and It sometimes fails when doing that. Every time I use the files app, I fold my hand and pray for it to go smoothly. The widgets on the iPadOS 15 has messed up the spacing on the home screen as well. Instead of adding some features the update has been an annoyance for the users. ymmv.

I am not an artist or a gamer. I did thought about picking up the Apple Pencil for the heck of it but I read forum posts about how it doesn't jive well with screen protectors so I just gave up on that idea.

Then I thought I could use it to read books but this damn thing is not that easy to hold or read on without getting fatigued eyes and hands.

It's a shame that such a good hardware is just completely hampered by the bad software experience.

For me, this has been the most regretful purchase I have ever made in my life. I am thinking about selling it but I don't know if it will fetch any good value where I live. I wished I had purchased a Mac mini or the Air instead of the iPad. Another Mac could have actually helped me in web development or other hobbies that I like exploring from time to time.

Just buy a MacBook pro

Apple never tries to help you save money, they want you to keep spending money. Just buy iPad iPhone MacBook Mac with a lot of paid apps then you get the best experience, and keep doing these again and again to upgrade for years and years.

I'll just leave this here: https://www.macstories.net/stories/rediscovering-the-mac/

The iPad Pro is such a wasted opportunity, and I think it stems from Apple not wanting to cannibalize its own product lines. They want users to double dip on iPad's and Macbooks.
I read this article word for word twice yesterday because I couldn’t believe it. And that’s saying a lot because I usually avoid his stuff due to it always being 10 pages long.

Note it’s not the iPad in general he’s giving up on, it’s the iPad as a professional productivity device he’s questioning. It’s not that the iPad Pro is bad, it’s that the new Macs are THAT GOOD.
