I have to say I love how some people complain about the weight. Last thursday me and my Girlfriend had took a day free from studying. this means curl up in the sofa , me with the iPad she with the iPhone and the we turn on whichever series we last downloaded. This thursday we watched House MD for 12 hours straight. And I used my iPad 11of those hours, all this time I held it in my hands, and nope... never thought of it as being heavy.

I dont neccesarily think you need a gym membership. But you must be doing something seriously wrong if you feel it is heavy and difficult after only 15 minutes.

So true...It's hard to picture some seemingly able-bodied people getting through life when they can't even hold an iPad. I guess some people will always find something to complain about.

I love how so many nerds are bragging about not finding the iPad heavy, especially after a long time.

For myself, after an hour or so, it does get heavy. This is from someone who can bench press 275lbs for 6 reps.

Wimp. If your only doing 275 for 6 reps, you ain't doing much. When you're doing AT LEAST 4 plates for 10, then come talk to me.

...and I bet your form is bad too.

Wow, you are ally strong, may I brag to my friends about knowing someone as strong as you?

Seriously though, as I said it may be that you just hold it wrong. And bragging about how much you bench, make me think you are kind of stupid, ( really tried to think how to phrase that without sounding insulting) but did not manage as english is not my first language, because if you think the muscles for benching is the ones you need to hold an iPad you are either really proving you hold it wrong or dont know anatomy.

And just because you seem to want a pissing contestI bench even more than you do. 320. And yeah I call myself a nerd, even though I am really fit, it follows as I am a proffesional Ballet dancer.

Haha, everyone has said already what I was gonna say.

Time to start working out. To think 2 1/2 lbs is heavy you must have no upper body strength..

4 plates each side = 4 X 45 = 180 each side plus 40 for the bar...400

LOL...ballet dancer...

Wow! Real classy replies. My response was to show that most of these people telling others to go "get a gym membership" was unwarranted.

If you think that you don't use your arms, wrists, and grip when you bench press, who's the stupid one?

You should tell all of your friends that you know a lot of people who can hold their iPad for several hours without fatigue setting in.

Speaking of "real classy," [sic], re-read your original post.

Exactly. Reminds me of another thread where some one thought a MacBook was heavy and he said he could lift like 225 twice. I lol'd

An iPad weighs 1.5lbs. If people could, they'd complain to God about the weight of their newborn babies.

It's not the weight. It's the weight over time and how you hold it to do what you want to do with the device. But hey, no need to think about pesky ergonomics when you're so strong. Feel free to private message me when you're 80 and completely pain-free as you're apparently all superhumans.

What is the purpose of a thread like this other than to complain about the weight?

It doesn't take a superhuman to hold an iPad. That said, those that have trouble for whatever reason should consider one of the many options suggested by others in this thread, such has holters, mounts, stands, etc. That's all there is to it.

I'm skinny as a bean pole and can't bench press a feather.

I find the iPad to be fine most of the time.... some positions it is a bit uncomfortable... but not due to the weight, but rather the size.

But, the only way to fix that problem, would be with a significantly smaller screen, and I like the way it is now overall.

YMMV :)

Unergonomic maybe, not shaped to my hand but not horrible to hold.

Heavy?! are you serious?

We're serious. I can't speak for the OP, but someone who wants to use a device, has some difficulty with it, etc. is probably not joking or trolling. I'm being serious. I'm a software engineer. My joints are abused after over 15 years in front of a keyboard full time. The weight of certain objects that you hold for long periods of time certainly does matter.

I have to think about strange things like which kind of shifters to use on my bike or how to open a bag of cereal. It has nothing to do with strength and everything to do with recovering from RSI.

As someone who has experienced CTS and other RSI-related issues, these things eventually do matter and I can attest to the fact that at certain weights, depending on how you hold something, even a 1.5lb. device can be awkward.

Any example. The Nexus One is less comfortable to me than the iPhone. The reason being that the material the Nexus One is made of, the same slippery surface that the MacBook is made of, is hard to grip. So when I owned both for Android and iPhone development the Nexus One was a device I never carried. It was awkward to keep a grip on it given the phone's surface. So it went into a case eventually and was much better. Did the same thing when I bought my iPad. Immediately put it in a silicone case so it wasn't so slippery.

EDIT: Also, fwiw, when someone says something about how insane it is that the iPad is too heavy for some of us or talks about lifting weights I'm voicing those posts using the voice of Hanz and Franz. It makes it less painful.

I think there is some confusion in this thread. When you say that you watched TV hows on iPad for 11 hours, I am sure you do not mean to say that you actually held the iPad for all this time, right? iPad was resting with you on the sofa. When people are complaining about the weight they talk about something different. They talk about actually holding the iPad. Why is this important? Because when we talk about watching TV on a sofa, this is not something iPad is uniquely suitable for. Any laptop would do just as fine if not better because laptop has a natural stand. Same is true for taking notes during the lecturers. What's the inherent benefit of using the iPad for this? Just put the laptop/netbook on the desk and type: faster, better (and yes, there are laptops, like Sony VAIO X, that are much lighter than iPad, so hauling them in the backpack is not an issue).

The tablet computer is supposed to be better as mobile computer (probably implying handheld use). Does iPad meet this requirement or is it too heavy for that?
