I wouldn’t say solved, just mitigated. It doesn’t always work. Holds sometimes register as touches, and touches sometimes register as holds. If there is a button or text on the edge of the screen, sometimes there is no physical difference between a thumb long press and a thumb holding the screen.

It’s funny to me that Jony said that they slimmed the mini side bezels so that the mini can be easily picked up and used with one hand. Funny because 1) it wasn’t due to aesthetics nor to maximize the screen to body ratio, which are the only reasons people seem to want slim bezels, and 2) he and I must have different definitions of the word “easy”.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good iPad Mini 5 case? I like the thin Apple smart cover/smart case design, but they don't seem to make the smart case for the mini anymore and I'm nervous about only using a front case when the device is still in my bag.

Most of the cases I can find seem to be folio-style cases which are a little bulkier than I'm keen on.

I’m using this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07Q6W6NMD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it’s very good. Moko do a good one too.

I originally was going to save up for the next iPhone (am currently with an iPhone 8+), but think I'll pass and wait another year.

So am thinking about the iPad mini. Currently am using a 3rd generation iPad (ok, quit that laughing) on more or less a daily basis. Yeah, it's slow. But it still does everything I need (light web surfing, email, play the occasional video, etc.).

Still, I think now wouldn't be a bad time to upgrade. The mini 5 looks like a pretty nice deal. And I like the extra portability. I could probably put it in a jacket pocket to take with me.

Has anyone gone from a large iPad like that to the mini and would up liking it? I wish I could see for myself, but no Apple store here and Walmart doesn't have any yet. And they are sold out of the mini 4.

Any advice/personal experiences would be welcomed. Thanks!

I went from the original Air to a Mini 4 and suspected I’d love it. Luckily I was right. I loved it so much I subsequently upgraded to the Mini 5 upon its release. The portability can’t be beat IMO, even though the larger screen can be more eye catching. I just find myself not even thinking twice about using the Mini over my iPhone. It was a different story with my Air. I mostly used my Air as a small TV, while my Mini gets a lot more uses.

I recently did exactly this upgrade. I felt as though I had no alternative, as I didn’t want a bigger screen which ruled out the Air, and I couldn’t justify the money for the 6th Gen with an A10. Part of my reason for upgrading was the ever growing list of apps no longer supporting the iPad 3, and with an A10, that would come around again sooner rather than later. If the Mini had an A10 or A11, I might have considered the 6th Gen at refurb pricing, but thankfully I’d always liked the look of the Mini and it works for me. With the A12 and 3GB RAM it is more future proof than any other device that offered what I was looking for.

At this moment I can’t see myself going back to a non-Mini. Are you able to place an online order with Apple, to make use of the generous returns policy if the Mini doesn’t work as well for you?

It came out today and looks awesome! I have the Mini 4 and am glad they kept the line alive. Anyone gonna buy one to keep the sales rolling?

Upgraded my 4 to a 5 because using the Pencil on my 12.9" iPP has become so important to me that I wanted to be able to work on documents that I'd started on the 12.9" IPP on the Mini. I wish they'd adopted the Gen 2 Pencil, but I "get it" that that's a Pro-range feature. I've been very pleased with the upgrade.

I bought this - I don't really like the stickiness of the silicone cases and the TPU is a tactile turnoff for me (YMMV), and this had a loop for the Pencil:

Soke iPad Mini 5 Case 2019 with Pencil Holder, Premium Trifold Case with Strong Protection, Ultra Slim Soft TPU Back Cover with Auto Sleep/Wake Function for New Apple iPad Mini 5th Gen(Black)

I vouch for the Mini too. I loved it outside the usual irresponsive touch issue. My only design quibble is the bottom firing speakers, that’s better with headphones but the only thing that bummed me out about the design of the Mini 5.

I am reconsidering it, because it is the perfect portable size for me. Just waiting on sales.

I saw a rumor on the iPhone SE revival named the iPhone XE. Sounds like the perfect combination with the iPad Mini. The rumor had it with an A12 too. Talk about a potent combination. And maybe you can get both for less than the current iPhone.

I swear every once in a while this happens to me too, with the keyboard but clicking little links and buttons on safari seems no problem so maybe its just a glitchy keyboard? either that, or I just sometimes assume i Know where the keys are when im not actually used to the mini since i havent used one since the mini2. i chalked it up to not a hardware issue.

Safari is definitely an issue with the keyboard (Safari has been wonky for me for several iterations of iOS), but this was also happening in Procreate. That makes me think it is hardware and software, given my history with touch irresponsiveness with the Pencil and my fingers in Procreate in tandem with Photos in split screen. Hell, I noticed really bad touch issues with my mom’s 2018 iPad last week which makes me think it could be a charging issue too (as was partially the case with my 2017 iPP).

Ultimately, I don’t know. All I want an iPad I can use with Procreate without issue.

My iPad 10.5 Pro gets the whole non responsive screen sometimes too. Sometimes the iPad is frozen like and no touches register until I go back to home screen then back to my app. It’s very irritating. I have yet to have this problem on my M5. Do you think it’s hardware or software related?

I am prone to think hardware -given my experiences- since it is the pencil and fingers not responding. That said, I am willing to give the iPad Mini 5 another go. Just waiting on sales.

I am glad there are no additional reports of this trouble on the Mini 5.

Verizon still has $100 off on the mini 5. I got my 64 cellular for the price of WiFi. At the time of release, Verizon was offering $150 off, which is what I got. No long term contract. I paid mine off in less than a month with no penalty.

Thanks, but after my recent 6s+ debacle with Verizon, I will never finance another device through a carrier.

I need more storage than 64gb. Not a cloud kind of gal.

Glad you got a deal that suits you and you enjoy your Mini.

Just sold my iPad mini 3 and got the iPad mini 5

Much faster. And loads eBay amazon Newegg pages much better.

I got a discount on the mini 5 purchased the WiFi 64gb model.

Mine doesn’t ever “freeze” Just sometimes doesn’t recognize a key but doesn’t no seem consistent and very infrequently

I saw the freeze problem on my Mini 2 but haven't seen it on the Mini 5. One thing of note - I found out that email takes a huge toll on the iPad Mini 2. Cleaning out my inboxes of years of emails improved performance to where it was usable on the Mini 2.

@ macfather would it suffer from screen breakage if you struck it with a hammer?

How hard do you press the exact center of the screen?

As I am pretty sure it is not designed to be pressed as firmly as you described.

Does your iPad mini 5 suffer from an air leakage (you hear and feel air coming from the bottom) when you press firmly in the middle of the screen? Mine does.
Not sure if it’s the same thing, but I had this happen on my first 12.9 ipp. First, I noticed a faint clicking noise when I tapped on the screen in certain places. As I was testing the taps, I also noticed it leaked air out the speaker/port area when I pressed the center of the screen. I was within my return period so I traded it for another ipp and haven’t had either issue since.
Can’t be sure, but I think the clicking was the sound of glue inside touching and separating with each tap, and maybe the air leakage was because of the air gap where the glue should have been keeping the surfaces together.

One thing about the Mini 5 is it has insane battery life compared to my iPhone. That's likely due to a new battery but it might also be due to the more efficient processor. So far this device has delighted with no downsides as of yet. If Apple does release the rumored iPhone XE (SE2 successor), I might go for that as a small phone + iPad Mini would work well for me.

iPads have much bigger batteries, too. Most of it goes to powering the display so if you have backlight on low (I usually have mine on 0-15%), that nets you significant battery life gains over an iPhone on same brightness.
