Steady there. Macrumors forum users anre't exactly a majority. I imagine most buyers will keep it, and many won't even notice or care.

Other than myself, I don't know a single iPad owner who reads forums or follows any news regarding iPads (or any other device for that matter). I'm a retired engineer so I have the interest and time. My wife owns an iPad and I know she could care less about this stuff. "Really? I never noticed that. What's the big deal?"

Not only do I not have jelly, but I also don't understand the complaints about the screen being low quality or worse than the Mini 5. I think the screen is great. Not iPad Pro level, but just as good as the 5.

Maybe the jellying and the poor screen some are complaining about are related? Which would indicate more than one manufacturer screen manufacturer.

I can see the jelly scrolling on my 256 Starlight 5G. Noticed it the first thing when I was scrolling a news article.

You can also test with this video - rotate the screen to landscape, play at full screen and 2x speed.

I don't see anything unusual.

Tried it full screen both landscape and portrait and I don’t have it. Strange.

I'd say it is more likely that some people just can't see it, the same way some people swear they can't see how choppy a 60 Hz display is. It took my a while to learn how my eyes needed to focus and move to see it so it doesn't seem to be something everyone does inherently.

From what I can understand from other devices that this happens on it has to do with where they place the display cable etc and how they build up that whole chain of things. Doesn't make it impossible for it to be a screen manufacturer related issue of course but previously it seems it wasn't. Even if it is the display cable they might be able to alleviate some of it in software but from previous devices it doesn't seem that manufacturers have been able to.

I’m almost completely sure that every iPad mini 6 has this. If you don’t know where to look for or are not trying to re-create it by a certain scrolling speed you will just not notice it. My complete family doesn’t know what I’m talking about when I’m showing them and I just can’t unsee it anymore.

Once you know how to re-create it to be the most visible and know what to look for I can see it in every 60hz device of Apple I have. And have quite a few. However in the mini it is by far the most noticeable, maybe due to the Aspect ratio, don’t know.

Still not sure if I’ll return it or not..

Just discovered something potentially interesting… when holding the new Mini in portrait, go to your home screen and slide in fron the left to bring up the widgets that are in the “today view“ (the coloumn of widgets that slides in from the left hand side). When I scroll through those widgets, the text does the same thing, slants in one direction when scrolling down and in another direction when scrolling up.

You can also open the Mail app in portrait. Open a mail message in full screen, then slide your finger into the screen from the left hand side to bring up the side bar /column showing your inbox (it will come up on the left hand side of the screen). When you scroll up and down on that column the text slants up and down in the same manner.

Same thing with the sidebar on the News app, in portrait if you bring up the side bar and scroll it up and down, the text slants.

The reason I mention this is that I thought this was to with one side of the screen refreshing at a different rate than the other, but in these two examples the defect is still happening when tested only on one side of the screen 🤔

That's very odd. 🤔

At this point I wish we could just get any kind of news that explain the reason behind all this.

I agree.

The best thing people can do right now is submit feedback to Apple on this:

Also it would help if people drop an email to Macrumors and alert them to this and ask them to cover it. Apple only usually sits up and takes notice when things this are reported in the major tech outlets.

I notice it in portrait, but not landscape. I went back to my 5 and it has it in landscape, but not portrait... Is there really a shift towards landscape being the intended default?

I've noticed this on the mini 4 now. It has the problem in landscape but not in portrait. The mini 6 has it in portrait but not landscape. Annoying as my usage of the mini is probably 90% in portrait.

Thanks so much for this!
Cancelled my order. I can deal with 60Hz (coming from an 11" Pro) but geez the colors look muted and the jello effect looks like a tablet 10 years ago, not a 2021 model. Oh Apple... the more employees you have the less you actually do right.

No problem, I doubt all iPad mini 6 displays are effected but the screen on this unit is quite poor 😔

My display colors are really nice, display looks of high quality, so did my Mini 5. Of course it is LCD, still very good quality. It is even better because in comparison my Mini 5 had a very red tint to it which I only could tell when comparing them next to each other.

I guess I have the jelly effect too, if it is a display problem, but I can't really see it. If I don't see it, it doesn't bother me. I thought of exchanging my Mini 6 because of a quite loose power button but now I guess I don't because everything else seems very good. No problems whatsoever. Display looks very crisp, very nice and not too warm or with some kind of massive color tint to it. So it is not every device with poor colors.

I wouldn't just cancel a buy in general. But maybe buy it in store and check it out there and then return it immediately if display or device has a major defect or problem.

Yes I agree the lcd is a very good display only problem I have with my mini is the jelly effect I just can’t live with it as its very bad otherwise I would keep it , other than that the mini6 is a great device

best display I have is by far the M1 12.9 iPad Pro I prefer it over oled as the latter has my issues with uniformity etc.

My main question is: why doesn’t the Mini 5 have this issue?

Or if it has, I have noticed zero times over the years.

You probably didn’t notice. I am able to replicate in all of our iPads with 60hz. Some have it in portrait, some in landscape. Our iPad 10.5 has it in Landscape. It’s just the most noticeable on the mini 6, maybe because its more narrow aspect ratio in portrait..

I am waiting till mid October for my mini. Should I notice the jelly effect, can I return it for a full refund. Even if I have opened and used the device.

i have a iPad 4 air and a M1 12.9 and both do not have this jelly effect in both landscape or portrait

I had to go looking for the jelly problem after reading about it here. My iPad Mini 6 has it as well. Do I care? Not really as I'm not in the habit of quickly flicking the screen up and down in normal, every day use. The screen is very nice otherwise.

Do you also notice it on the mini 4 with the video in https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-mini-6-jelly-scrolling.2313178/post-30351953 ? Because I don’t notice it on my mini 4 in either orientation. I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t notice it with normal website scrolling, but I would expect to see it with the video if the effect is there. On the other hand it might be good news for me that I’m not sensitive to he effect.

Were you satisfied with the mini 4 before you noticed it?
