Please everyone stop disparaging folks for whom this is a major deal breaker.

If you're sensitive to this and can't "not see it" -- it sucks -- be happy you don't have that issue.

If portrait mode usage is of prime importance for you, this is major bummer vs previous Mini's

The world is bad enough without us fighting over this.
Please show some empathy!
I second this. Well said. I am always loathed to nit-pick over small annoyances, but this is a major issue for me on the new Mini, it completely takes away from the experience of using the device in portrait mode and causes me to feel disoriented.

One thing thing that puzzles me a little. Why exactly is everyone so bent out of shape about this?

It seems like it's a perfectionist thing. After all, you're not reading when you scroll. It's just a 'non-functional', distortion that everyone is up in arms about.

I hear: "I can't unsee it"; "Once you see it it's always present". So when people go test this phenomena, they actually may fear that once they see it it's over: their new Mini will be ruined forever.

Eye of the beholder

It's a minor annoyance that may be just an excuse to either trash this device, or undo an impulse buy.

No it’s a usability thing.

I have been using a mini 5 for 2 years. When I use the mini 6 it is a less enjoyable experience. The bezels are smaller but who cares when the screen is worse. So why did I spend hundreds of dollars to degrade my practical experience?

That’s why I just returned it. It isn’t a disaster, it’s just a very disappointing product.

On the same note, don’t say that people who can’t see it are blindly defending Apple. It works both ways. (I‘m not saying you’ve done this.)

The hell? I absolutely adore my mini 2. And I refuse to learn to see it.

Why didn't anyone 6itch about it until now? That's been out for 8 years.
As I say, it is more obvious on the Mini 6. It especially affects those who want use the Mini 6 primarily in portrait. It bothers some people greatly, and others not, so need to try yourself if you have not done so already.

If you are happy with the Mini 2, that is great. The Mini 6 screen really is only very slightly larger.

I was starting to get frustrated with my Mini 2, as it is often stuttering, some apps would crash, and is stuck on iOS 12 (which is OK, but I prefer all my devices on the same version for a consistent experience).

I just got my 6 and won't be looking for the Jelly. Ignorance, in this case, really is bliss.

True..
But..

The manufacturer has now made a statement that this is there and on every unit...it's part of the design with how they did the screen orientation.

The onus is sort of now on those folks to admit that and say something like:

Jelly must be there and I just can't see it.
Bummed for all of you that can't "not see it"

Many of the types you're hinting at have been **insisting** their unit doesn't have jelly scroll.
Apple says it does -- they all do -- it's the design.

Those users simply can't see it and it'd behoove them to admit that's the final outcome here.
...at least if they'd like to be debating in good faith now and in the future -- it'd be appreciated.

Sure, now that Apple has responded it would be appropriate for people to stop saying their device doesn’t have it. As for insisting, that might be a bit strong.

When I first read about the complaint and saw the Verge twitter post I was very skeptical. I didn’t see it in any of the described situations. Then some posted the UFOTest and I changed my opinion since I could see the effect. But before that, I could see myself being sure my iPad mini didn’t have the issue.

The discussions here have been mostly very enlightening. I know more about display refresh than I did and as I’ve said a couple of times, I find the variability of human perception to be fascinating.

Edited to match @turbineseaplane changes.

I don’t agree with that at all. It’s a technical issue on a product that I’m very interested in. The discussions here have been mostly very enlightening. I know more about display refresh than I did and as I’ve said a couple of times, I find the variability of human perception to be fascinating.

Please update this - I changed my post while you were replying

Thx

If you review every one of my posts, you would see that I have always described it as being lucky enough not to be able to see it, or not sensitive enough to see it. Others have simply said they can’t see it either. I haven’t seen anyone say that it doesn’t exist….have you?

I’ve been using Minis exclusively for almost 9 years now, and so far nothing has yet deterred my enjoyment of these little beauties. I still don’t see it when I do continuous scrolling at medium speed keeping my finger on the screen and dragging, and I still don’t see it when use apps or websites that don't have dark modes. I think I’m just not sensitive enough to see this issue, perhaps BECAUSE I’ve using Minis for the last 9 years. :)

For me it’s a flagship worthy device that sadly isn’t treated as such.

Honestly I'd have to go back and look - I don't mean you - but yes, it was from several users (that I have put on ignore actually)

Some just get so overly defensive about any Apple product that has any issues -- for some it becomes a personal thing it feels like... like "don't say something might be wrong with my expensive device that I love!"

It really is begging for the "Pro" treatment (ProMotion specifically)

Part of why I'm so bummed here is that the Mini gets somewhat infrequently updated. I was really hoping this form factor change would bring about even more dramatic changes vs the Mini5.

Now I basically am hoping for an iPad Mini Pro - especially if we are going to be dealing with portrait jelly from now on.

This discussion and the ""I see it" / "I don't see it" reminds me of a similar issue that ran to 49 pages of posts - "12 Pro Stutter when closing apps":

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/12-pro-stutter-when-closing-apps.2263484/

Isn't this more clear cut though?

In a somewhat uncharacteristic move, Apple has already gone on record that the jelly is definitely a thing and part of how the screen works and this is really just much more noticeable than other devices due to the orientation change.

This issue just seems very clear and not open to much anecdotal interpretation.

It's definitely there, on all devices -- it's just whether your can personally perceive and/or are bothered by it (or not)

Apple says this is normal behavior and has no plans to fix this:

Well, that was very disappointing and unfortunate, but quite expected. Almost have a bad taste in my mouth right now. I awaited the Mini 6 for so long, and to have this be the end result is just...anticlimactic. Now my two most prominent experiences with iPads are iPad 3 with it's poor performance and support and Mini 6 with its baffling choice of refresh orientation.

People on both sides are defensive, understandably. Everyone wants to like those devices. Some are happy with them and don't want them to be disparaged by others. Others are disappointed because the devices are not what they'd like them to be (because of actual flaws, missing features, or just different design choices). In theory, both should be able to ignore that and go on with their lives. But we are all human and it's not always easy.

Say that out loud a few times though and think how ridiculous it is..
It's a tech device, not someones child.

lmao

No healthy adult should be worried if anyone is "disparaging their iPad"

I fully agree with your analysis of what's happening - I just find it mesmerizingly silly..

Well some of us do worry about the amount mis(dis)information put out on these forums. I agree that it can be overboard at times but I see it happening in both directions. Every single new Apple product has these kinds of discussions where someone posts egregiously incorrect information. That creates a climate where someone else overreacts to technically correct information that isn’t known at the time.

As I said, there are examples on both sides.

Agreed.

This issue, though, is now clear cut and basically case closed (until a revision).

Every Mini 6 has portrait jelly scroll and you either see it or you don't
(or you see it and just don't mind it)

Right from the horses mouth (Apple)

Yeah, I am not about to tell my wife about this issue (she is the primary user of this iPad Mini). She is really excited by it, and I am not about to spoil it for her.
Reminds me of a time when a friend remarked that my fridge in my small apartment sounded like an airplane motor. Had not thought about it at all since I moved in, but you can bet that it caused some sleeping problems after that. Was a bit grouchy with him afterwards. ;)

Yeah, there's a world of problems we don't know we have until someone "helpfully" points them out.
