The animations https://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/ page literally go back and forth between using it in portrait and landscape. One of the most touted features is center stage to center you on the screen in landscape. The speakers are oriented in a way to give stereo playback in landscape. Photo / video editing and games and even productivity apps were are all depicted in landscape on the keynote.

There is no one answer here - majority orientation is going to be dictated solely by the apps the each customer primarily use.

Which is why people need to tell Apple what apps they are using and why portrait is more important to them instead of blanket statements like this display sucks.
Good point 👍🏼

You’ve got my point mixed up.

I’m not denying that the marketing makes it look like a portrait device, I’m saying that the majority of people aren’t sensitive to “jelly scrolling”.

If their choice was have the device as it is which is fine for the majority of people, or use a much more expensive screen that is fine for all people, you know which they’re going to pick.
I see, thanks for clarifying 👍🏼I have to say I’m pretty annoyed I seem to be sensitive to it / perceive it. But I‘m also confused why this has never been an issue for me before, and I’ve owned iPads every year since they were released! Its just so much more visible for me on the Mini for some reason, which sucks.

Cheap display.

It’s driving me nuts. I really enjoy using it in landscape, but just look at this is in portrait- look at the bold text as I scroll quickly, slowly, it’s just sooooo pronounced. And it was like this on all the display units I saw in store recently too.

Just an interesting fact what I saw from teardowns.

All iPads - the signal cables are in the bottom of the display so the control circuit is there, meanwhile the Mini 6 are on the side. Probably that's the reason. It updates horizontally and not vertically.

I don't know if it is me, or the that I am looking at a video of this, but I am finding that I really have to focus on the text here to see the issue. When I initially looked at the video, and the same for a lot of videos posted, I just see blurry text going by. I really have to search out a line of text, focus on it, and follow that line of text to see the issue. Maybe it is more pronounced in real life?

I have seen a few videos in real time where it is obvious, but the majority posted here is not so clear for me without focusing extra hard on it. I still have wait another 2 weeks for my delivery, but maybe it will come sooner now if people are cancelling :D

Honestly don’t really see it in that video. I’ve seen much worse in other videos.

It’s the sort of thing that needs to be seen in person. Again, for me I really don’t see it enough to care.

It sounds like it’s annoying you so I suggest you return it and stop worrying about it’s existence.

I said the same in another thread it was posted in - can't see anything that would bother me. It's a matter of individual perception.

The video shared by @Macintosh101 was rendered at 30fps, which isn't enough to see the effect. You can definitely see it in person; however, any recording of this phenomenon would require a minimum framerate of 60fps to see it on another screen. That being said, it's far easier to see it if someone takes a slo-mo video.

Yes, I think people need to try it out for themselves, and not cancel based on videos or comments. In-person reactions range from outrage to not seeing it, or (probably most commonly) not really caring much.
Yes, I see the jelly scrolling and would prefer it be less so, but I am over it and am now thoroughly enjoying the new Mini 6. There is a lot to like about the Mini 6.
Folks with perhaps the biggest dilemma are those coming from a Mini 5, where the upgrade is relatively small, and the portrait jelly scrolling really bothers them.

What’s strange is that I can see it in that upaldoed video, very prominently, at 30fps - the text with the word “latger” tilts lets a full line above the actual line. And that’s how i see it in real world usage too.

I do wonder what the age demongraphic of those perceiving this problem is, and whether it has to do with ageing / young eyes etc.

It's definitely not the best panel I've ever seen, but it's still in the acceptable range for me. In fact, none of the Apple panels I've ever seen were the best. (but I never saw one of their 5K panels or the miniLED iPad Pros)

Major props for this post!
Thank you for coming around @Mac Tyson
It's not that I'm finally seeing it as my first reply in this thread was that it's not a big deal to me and I checked out my ipad first thing upon seeing the Macrumors article.

I should've left it at that. I should be more open to others' experience with tech.

I also wasn't trying to be smart about the pilot comment. I was misunderstood going about trying to see how the scrolling can affect the use of the ipad.

Anyway, i hope you're next ipad is the best ipad for you.

Thank you for coming around to it. But your "scrolling while reading" comments had me intrigued. I was going to reply about it last night but was too tired.

Now, I always assumed everyone does some reading while scrolling. Then I asked my dad and apparently he doesn't at all (says it increases eye strain)! I don't typically "read to absorb" while scrolling, but I definitely "read to scan" while scrolling. I'm always picking out keywords when choosing whether to click on a reddit or forum post. After that, I stop and have a more careful read if I need to. It's an essential part of the normal social media and website experience.

Even aside from that, I often read fast enough that I end up doing a slow scroll through the web page/app to keep the text in the middle. I can see the effect even going at the slowest possible scroll speed... The only times I don't see it is when flipping pages on kindle/books or using it in landscape mode or watching videos/gaming.

Just a thought for those bothered by jelly scrolling: try rotating the iPad Mini 180 degrees.
The slant direction will be reversed, so text instead of slanting down to the left, will instead slant down to the right, when scrolling up.
I don't know if this will make any difference to anyone bothered by the jelly scrolling, but worth a try?
