guys why do you want a M-Chip in a ipad mini?

Firstly, you definitely don;t need the performance for watching netflix

Secondly, the a18 chip performs just about as well as the m1

My wishlist for the Mini 7:

- more than 64 GB storage on entry level
- 120hz Display
- smaller bezels
- efficient A 18 chip

The giant bezels make the design look really dated. Either lose them and give the Mini a larger display in the same sized case (my preference) or lose them and shrink the case to fit the current display size sans bezels. But either way, lose them.

I'm only reading this because I'm interested to see what they do with this model, but I gotta say, too many of these posts are just nothing burgers filled with a lot of nothing. This whole entire article could have been "maybe they will fix the screen. " In the form of a tweet.

I like this site but man this was painfully crap nothing info.
I'm surprised at how few confirmed rumors there are for a device that's supposedly being released in the next few weeks.

Hopefully the jelly scrolling issue is resolved at least to some extent. Will be good to see some new colors.

  • A18 SoC, 8GB RAM, & starting storage at 128GB minimum
  • Shrink the bezels, push the display to 9"
  • 120Hz ProMotion would be nice
  • Apple Pencil Pro compatibility

I bet money this will be the best iPad mini Apple has ever made, super exciting stuff!
It’s always the best iPad mini Apple has ever made. One day I just like to see Tim Cook stand there at the beginning of product release in Apple Park with the rainbow behind him and say “This iPhone isn’t the best one we ever made but it’s pretty darn good”

The M1 chip...
has the same NPU from the A14, a 4 year old chip. only 11 TOPs compared to 35 on the A17.
uses older DDR5 RAM.
Has a GPU less capable than the A17 and A18.
is less power efficiant than the A17 or A18.

People still don't seem to really understand what the M chips are, they arent always better than the A chips.
The M1 is like the A14X, and the M4 is like an A18X.
The M1 is a different architecture.

'A' units will be obsolesced faster than M units.

iPad mini 6 is, hands-down, my fav iPad I've used to date. And easily the one I've used the most. Portable enough to carry as a notebook/sketchpad. Large enough to enjoy in-flight entertainment. It's a pretty perfect form factor.

IMHO, The jelly scroll thing is so blown out of proportion. Can I see it? Yep. Is it distracting? Hardly. I only notice it when I am looking for it. I remember finally "seeing it" and thinking "that's what all the fuss is about?" It's anon-issue, for meYMMV.

That said, I do think there is a market for an iPad Pro mini. A no compromises iPad in a most portable form factor. Sign me up.

I’m moving to a dumb phone in January and plan to use my iPad mini for when I *have* to get online. It’ll be very portable, but still enough of an inconvenience to discourage me from mindlessly doomscrolling.

If you like, you could save the money on the dumb phone and buy the cellular mini, install a VOIP app and use buds for hearing and speaking in calls. Works like a charm and is MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE than about any "phone" ownership plan... including the dumb ones. I've been using Cellular Mini as my "phone" (too) since iPad mini 2. No regrets. Not really feeling like I'm missing anything of consequence. One less device to also carry around.

I would not be so sure about that.
The A10X is technically more powerful than the A12, yet it gets dropped.
The M1 and A14 will more than likely get dropped around the same time, followed by the M2 and A15.

To me it sounds like they want it simply because it has a different letter so it must be more special.
When the truth is an M chip and an iPad mini would be even more underutilized than the M4 in an iPad Pro.
But even worse because the M chips are more power hungry than the A chips, and the iPad mini has a 19.3WH battery, significantly smaller than even the 11 inch iPad Pro.

What do you think about the potential impact of a jelly scrolling fix on the new iPad mini? Do you think it's a significant enough improvement to justify the cost of upgrading?

It doesn't even read like a fix, rather they are likely just shifting the issue from portrait to landscape, where it'll hopefully be less noticeable at least.

I want a product that is an iPhone Pro Max Ultra when folded, but an iPad mini Pro Ultra when unfolded, with Apple Pencil Pro Ultra support...

1) Ability to read in direct sunlight
2) Face ID

IPad mini is best for trips. Never understood why Apple could not bake-in the ability to read books pool/surf-side. The iPad Pro replaced my lap-top on my last trip and adddressed all of my needs except reading on the beach. Too large. Feeling nostalgic, I raided my late father’s paperback collection, he flew 2 to 3 times a week for 40 years and had amassed an amazing collection. Being able to read in direct sun would be a welcomed addition. Saw several people with Kindles on the beach and was envious. So clear and crisp.

be good if mini 7 allows for stage manager support
Would be cool, although they did limit external display support with Stage Manager to M chip iPads so far.

I do wonder how they want to set the mini apart from the regular iPad though. If they both get the A18 + 8 GB RAM for Apple Intelligence, the only real difference would be that the screen is laminated (unless they finally choose to do that for the base model as well).

Charging more for more or less the same device with a smaller screen would be contrary to how they handle it with iPhones and MacBooks.

So I wonder what they'll do to properly set it apart from the next base iPad. Although I wouldn't put it past them to just neglect the mini and put it in a weird spot in the lineup where it only makes sense for people who really want the mini size.

Good for those who are not bothered by jelly scroll even if they see it. Why begrudge changes to help ease or fix this issue for those who are sensitive enough to it that they cannot even tolerate using the Mini 6?

Apple has a strong incentive to fix it: more users = more money. Also, the launch of the Mini 6 was marred with bad press over jelly scroll.

I've upgraded every Mini wince the first one and currently have v6. But I also bought the 13" iPad Air earlier this year and I'm finding the combo perfect to fill my needs for various activities. I don't think I'm going to upgrade the Mini this time though. But I'm still excited to see what it's bringing.
