It’s not the worst iPad mini release by a long chalk, and had I been able to trade in like for like as some users here have done to get a fresh battery, more RAM and more storage for a few hundred I probably would have done. I can’t, so I as a cellular user will do what I can to signal that eSim just isn’t good enough in this part of the world and not buy it. If they notice people aren’t buying Cellular any more in certain markets, they might realise that at least in those, removing the sim tray is costing more than it ever saves.
The worst mini releases were the 3 (Face ID and a new colour were all it offered), the OG (Retina was on everything else bar Macs) and the 4: only a one generation chip jump after waiting 2 years (assuming that most would have been waiting for a worthy upgrade from the 2.)
The 5 and 6 both had the then latest A chip, which makes the lack of a A18 Pro contribute to the ‘lazy update’ feeling. And as soon as the base iPad has A16, it will look even worse (so hopefully the Mini 8 won’t be as far away as we think.) If anything, not giving the 6th Gen 6GB RAM was the biggest stinge - the Air had already had 4GB for a year and they must have known that it was about to get 8. Time will tell whether the A17 Pro does cost sales, but at least users know exactly what the drawback is this time rather than finding out the true extent of it in 6 months time.
