I'd be interested to see sales numbers of the two.

No doubt that the mini would win over the Nexus 7 because it has to compete with other Android tablets in it's class. Rumor has it that the Amazon tablet will be a Nexus 7 killer. The issue I have with the Fire is that it's running forked Android (not pure Android like on the Nexus) and you do not have access to Google Play. But people will buy them because it will be cheaper than the Nexus 7 and people are not geeks; they don't care about stock Android. They care about value and consumption which are the primary focus for the Kindle Fire.
Too many of you guys focus on one Android at a time and not the big picture. Month after month there's always something new getting released that has Android or made with Android in it. The last major iOS device was iPad mini/iPad 4 which was 9 months ago. Sales slow at predictable rates when Apple is about to update their products. Apple can't keep up at this rate.

It's incredible how some people like to drink Apple branded Kool-Aide. Check what CPU/chipset the iPad mini runs and then come back and check your statement.

How can you say that? I think you are drowning in the Apple Kool-Aide yourself. It amazes me how some people can create their own little world and then throw insults at those that live in reality. When did the Mini come out?

I won't be buying anything Android. I will wait to see what the new Mini looks like. I didn't buy version one because it had a processor that was 2 or 3 generations (there's a bone for you to pick at; I didn't know exactly how obsolete the original Mini processor was when it came out) older than the then current iPhone. For my use the screen was ok, but if it couldn't out perform my Kindle, why waste my money.

Most consumers assume all tablets are HD. The new nexus 7 is not going to get any iPad like boost in sales due to specs. Call me when google drops andriod for chrome OS, and has apps specifically designed for the nexus 7! Then I can take them seriously. Specs are useless if your apps don't take advantage of them.

I have a iPad mini and love it, and won't be changing, but IMHO, its competitor is the Nexus 7.2. Period. What else would people compare it too? To harp on about release dates and hardware is just ridiculous and making excuses. When the iPad mini was released, didn't Apple compare it directly to the "older" Nexus 7 on their key note presentation? Can't have it both ways.

I always wonder why people think specs matter. People don't buy the iPad mini because it is masterful technology. They buy one because they like the Apple ecosystem and they wanted a smaller tablet. The Nexus 7 cod offer free tea every day and their ecosystem still isn't there.

Im getting convinced more and more than next mini will be retina as the display review of new Nexus 7 is universally positive, the best on a tablet. I think Apple cant afford not to give retina display to next mini. The irony is since asus/google decided to give the best display to android tabs, this might just push apple over the edge of deciding in favour of incorporating HD resolution in new mini to stay in the competition for portable tablets. Too early to tell ,but thanks to android, we will be getting retina in next mini :D

When the Nexus 7.1 was released, most Apple fans said that no one needed a smaller tablet. Then came the iPad Mini.

And whose fault is that? ;)

----------

Interesting thread.

Try to imagine if the roles were reversed. Imagine if Apple was putting out a retina iPad Mini with a modern processor (even kept the same price) and Google/ASUS was putting out years-old processors and didn't have a higher resolution display...

Can you imagine how different some of these posts would be? I wonder. :D

But kudos to those sticking with the Mini (I mean it). Even I am not convinced the Android-tablet experience is quite there yet. Android on the tablet just doesn't feel as buttoned up as Android on a smartphone.

I know your question was rhetorical but yes, I can. The Android fanatics would be bleeting about customization and ability to change default apps, torrents, rooting/ROMing, and widgets and how they would never trade that for a few more pixels per inch.

And it would be about as persuasive as the Apple fanatics bleeting about ecosystem, build quality, tablet specific apps and ease of use, etc.

(at least I think I covered most of both sides talking points...)

It seems more rare these days that this sub-forum is used to tout new "Alternatives to iOS" vs post the inevitable "Why XYZ is CRUSHING Apple".

The ratio of signal to noise is definitely changing for the worse.

Everyone is 100% right - the Apple ecosystem still dominates the tablet market. However, this is going to change (just like it did with smartphones). Software companies will port their apps to Android and all the major apps worth using will be available to both Apple *and* Google. This is actually a good thing, because it means there will be more competition in the tablet market. (and more competition is good for the consumers, right?)

Some people have pointed out that the iPad Mini is running on outdated hardware. YES and so what??? If Apple chooses to sell outdated hardware, it doesn't change the fact that the Nexus 7 is significantly better. Most rumor websites say that the new iPad Mini won't even have a retina display! This is absolutely crazy. Apple is basically giving away a huge portion of the tablet market because they want to make ridiculous margins on their hardware from people like you. Another complaint is that Android is selling their tablet AT COST, thus making it cheaper than the iPad Mini. Are you guys freaking crazy? Since when is it a bad thing to sell a tablet at cost?

Aside from their ecosystem, Apple has one other thing that Android would kill to have. A blind customer base willing to put up with insane levels of mediocrity just to stick with them. Apple has tons of fanboys who wouldn't even consider a better tablet because they are so sold on Apple. It's hilarious and one of the things I like most about you guys. Keep up the good work!

And considerably less real estate than the iPad.

Haha, yes. Correct.

What country do you live in that it's a crime or unheard of for one to change his/her mind about something given new evidence?

The idea that Apple (and it's fans) are hypocrites because Jobs flip flopped on a smaller tablet and the mini has been so popular is ludicrous. Truth is, the mini is simply an excellent tablet. I love mine. Though I do go back and forth on it, given my primary use (now that I have an MBA) is for videos/TV watching. Depending on how heavy the iPad 5 is (and its overall footprint and form factor), I may decide to switch back to the regular size.

Anyways.....the title of this thread is ridiculous enough without the slew of redundant "Apple fans are hypocrites", "Google is beating Apple at its own game", "I wonder if comments would be different if Apple were the ones releasing the 'state-of-the-art' tablet".....

Until Android offers a decent tablet experience (tablet optimized apps), Apple will continue to be the best - specs be damned.

That being said, I don't know if I ever believed there wouldn't be a retina mini this fall, but to think that Apple will NOW create a retina mini, if it wasn't already their plan, for the fall because of the Nexus 7 is ignorant. Production lines have already begun and at this point, it wouldn't be possible to swap out for an entirely new display AND ramp up production to the numbers Apple needs for distribution in the fall.

If we see a retina mini in the fall, it was ALWAYS going to be that way.

Why do you think it is a bad thing to sell a tablet at a profit - even a ridiculous one? It's not as if Apple has a monopoly on tablets and forcing people who need them to buy them.

Have you looked at Samsung's top-tier tablet prices? (Outside of the subsidized Nexus 10) They are priced with a markup as well.

So does Samsung and so does Google, and every damn company in the world wants it. It's called brand loyalty. Don't hate on Apple or it's users because you don't like them, that's just rude. And most people in this area of the site are not completely blind to either side's failings/shortfalls

P.S. Also, you need to read more recent or more frequently updated rumor sites, your information on Maps and now Retina are seriously outdated.

But will the nexus 7 sell? How many are willing to give up the apple ecosystem? Will this device be supported when google drops android? I have google maps on my iPhone. There not that dumb they make the most profits in the industry. They have the most web useage in the industry. Where exactly is apple failing?specks and gimmicks, but who wants or needs them.

Considering Nexus 7 sold better than iMini, yes, when the iMini was released (a few months after actually, the N7 was still selling 1 MILLION each month), but neither will do as good as the 1st gen, as 1st will almost always sell better than 2nd.

So you think that a retina mini WON'T sell as well as the first gen iPad mini?

And please provide a source for the assertion that the N7 outsold the mini.....I find that terribly hard to believe.

Truth is, when the retina mini surfaces, it will far and away be the best selling tablet on the market, and unless something drastic happens to the regular sized iPad (increase storage to 32/64/128), the retina mini will likely further cannibalize regular iPad sales.

Yeah, and I'll still never buy another nexus 7 for as long as a live. I had an absolutely terrible experience with the first gen N7. Cappy built quality, and I had to get it replaced twice because of issues with the speaker and mics. The third one still isn't perfect. Mine is also laggy as hell. It started out with small amounts of lag, and it pretty much became unusable within 6 months. Trim support will probably fix that with the second gen, but I heard the 2nd gen is still kind of laggy. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. It doesn't matter because it would still be a crappy and overrated tablet, imo.

The tablet apps for iPads look way better from what I've seen. I won't waste my money on any more android tablets until the tablet apps are as good as ios tablet apps (my opinion). It seems like some developers put more effort into ios apps anyway... I would take a mediocre screen with an outdated OS, great apps, and minimal lag any day. For me personally the things that matter the most are app selection and lag since I use a lot of apps. Who cares if a device has amazing specs if it still lags?

I wish they'd make a killer 4:3 Android tablet for those of us that don't primarily use the tablet to play video. The nice build quality and 4:3 is the only reason I picked the iPad mini over the competition.
