I simply meant that, compared to 2010, the Android landscape is utterly improved. Far better OS, far better choices..

Because in 2010, there weren't many people who could say they actually had a GREAT experience with and Android phone.

Point being - to expect Apple to KEEP being lightyears ahead is absurd. I think this lull (2013) is going to lead to bigger and better things. But as smartphones go, people have too many demands.

In 2010, the iPhone was a great smartphone and iOS offered a superb experience. In 2010, there were a few nice Android phones, but overall the experience was mixed and meh.

In 2013, the iPhone is a great smartphone and iOS offers a superb experience. In 2013, there are a number of high-quality, great Android smartphones and most (if not all) flagships offer a superb experience.

I fail to see how Apple is failing - only that Android has finally joined the party, and because of the open nature of the OS (meaning a vast number of OEMs put it on their devices), Android owns the market share - make no mistake, that IS the reason Android owns market share. Because dozens of companies push of hundreds of differently priced, sized and specced Android smartphones each year. Apple makes 1 (and perhaps now 2).

The bezels are really not a big deal once you see it in person. In fact, I just forgot they were there. When you scrutinize pictures of the device, only then do the bezels bother.

But in use? They're really not as big as they appear, and altogether forgettable once you're into whatever you're doing on your device.

Totally agree, I have the Nexus 7.1 and it's bezels on the side are bigger than the 7.2 but I can't say in the 9 or so months I've had it I've ever found myself bothered by them.

But, like you said, when you see them in a picture they are a distraction.

To stay as far ahead would be impossible, but they've essentially stagnated. iOS 7 is the first even remotely significant change in forever.

Apple can only rest on iMessage integration for so long. The reasons to choose Apple over Android used to be vast unless you were a geek or an Apple hater. Now? You can save money and get a comparable experience on Android. I actually want Apple to come up with compelling reasons to buy an iPhone again, because I want competition - it makes everyone better (or causes the worst ones to die off).

I wish they'd make a killer 4:3 Android tablet for those of us that don't primarily use the tablet to play video. The nice build quality and 4:3 is the only reason I picked the iPad mini over the competition.

Any company that did a real attempt at a flagship class 4:3 tablet (more than a token effort or rebadge of Chinese junk) would get savaged to the nth degree. Much better to put out yet another stupid widescreen than cater to what is somehow seen as a niche market despite being the best selling tablet ratio. There would be forums devoted to ripping them & the pitifully devoted fApple blogosphere might simultaneously fap themselves to death over it.

I think this is also due to showing tablets primarily in portrait mode; in landscape mode, they are far less noticeable, even in pictures.

I dunno, somewhere in West Texas
Scaled up app isn't the problem on Android. It's the problem that Android developers aren't bothering to come up with a different app for tablets then what the phones use.

Look at SiriusXM, AP News, Denver Post, iHeartRadio. These apps look so different on the iPad then they do on the iPhone.

Take a look at the screen caps. First is SiriusXM on the tablet/phone version. These are all caps from June so some of them show old news etc.

Now here is the iPad version:

Ok now look at a local app that I use, 9News. First is the phone/tablet version:

And the iPad version:

Now you see what we are talking about when we say that the Android developers are just being lazy? Anytime you see the standard list format on an app on Android tablets, you know the app is a phone version.

True and the sad thing about this is that it's the same damn company. Maybe they have different development teams working on each platform but it's the same company that produces the same app for different platforms. I honestly believe that the reason they don't bother with android is because the OS is designed to automatically scale apps to fit resolution. Which is just pure laziness on the developers part and something that will only get fixed if enough of the buying public complains about it.

I was always under the impression that the whole purpose of using a tablet was for the bigger screen first and second, the apps that made use of that extra space.

I don't hate my Nexus 7 at all but for me, the apps are what I am into the most and with poorly written apps available for Android tablets, there is no question that my iPad is a winner in this case and will be until things change, if they do.

True and looking at the play store, the same could be said for it. I don't play games and yet there are lots of games on the apps page in the play store. I didn't see one app that I would be interested in on that one page.

Just like the iTunes app store, you have to go digging to find good apps.

Somewhat agree - I'm making the point that they are a deal-breaker FOR SOME. Some of us prefer experience in apps over specs - even with the lower res display.

I'm also not making the statement that everyone should feel as I do. Simply (as always) trying to make the other side's case. That some of us DO find the lack of tablet-optimized (not looks, but function) to be a big knock against Android tablets and a major reason why we won't buy one.

And I'm sure its difficult for you to type on iOS (not saying you're lying) but please know, its not that way for everyone. There are plenty (myself included) who have no problems typing on the iOS keyboard. Its a subjective criteria - your own personally perceived shortcomings. I actually find the iOS keyboard more responsive (quicker to type) than my HTC keyboard and so find it easier to type on my iOS keyboard. Though I do like the swype-typing on the One.

I'm not so sure it'll be all that easy. The sheer number of OEMs and different sized tablets out there in the Android space make it difficult to truly optimize an app. Of course, devs could take the biggest step and add more functionality to those apps while still letting them scale to fit different sizes. The functionality (changed layout to increase function as well) is the major issue IMO.

I could easily point out objective shortcomings of the iOS keyboard compared to Android stock keyboard and other third party options. Easily. :p

Agree with most everything else.

The top ten free apps are almost always juvenile crap. It's areas like music creation where the iOS ecosystem is lightyears ahead of android.

Totally agree with this. What is happening is a natural progression of the market. 3 or more years ago, Apple had the market to themselves so of course they had high marketshares then. In 2010 for most consumers who wanted a high quality device, it was the Apple way or the highway. Now people have more choice and android devices tend to be cheaper overall. Most people would pay less for what they percieve as the same thing. So it's not that Apple are failing, it's just that the market has changed.

As good as nexus 7 fhd is, when ipad mini retina releases, it will be the best tablet on earth . There is nothing like ios on tablets. I dont find android very appealing on tabs .

Thought of going for new nexus 7 , but now will wait for retina mini.

Agree.

Source?

Ridiculous statement. iPad 2 sold more than the 1. Same for iPhone.
A newer, more advanced product never sells as well as its first iteration? Now that's something I've never heard before.

Source for what the 1 mill sales? It was on every android sites ever when google announced it.

in terms of the 7 inch(ish) market, I went with Google last year, and I will probably buy a new N7 soon. But in my opinion nothing really beats a full sized iPad. Especially if you're in to music/video stuff, the iPad is great and in those categories you have virtually no options with an Android tablet.

I like them both for different reasons. I fully intend to buy the next full sized iPad and the most recent N7 refresh.

Sorry, I must have a different Play Store than you? This is the top apps and top paid apps, in the Apps section. Maybe you went to the Games section? By the way, if you use Android you have some of those top 10 apps. Not games.

I don't see the appeal of the Nexus 7 personally.

The looks of the hardware and software are sorta revolting.

LOL. Whereas neon Barbie iOS7 isn't? Or an iPad with a cheap plastic case covering the whole iPad isn't? Or those ugly as hell polyurethane neon colored smart covers? Really?

Your hatred toward all things Android is evident. Not sure why you even bother to post here, other than to post negative comments in this section?

A little late to this forum, but thought I would add my $0.02!

I finally gave up on my ipad retina gen 3. A system crash made me loose my JB- and I was forced to restore to ios 7. Ios 7 is nice for a phone, but useless for a tablet.

Having had an iphone and iPad from there first iterations - I was truly rooted deep in the apple ecosystem. No longer

I rarely use iTunes on my ipad. My iCloud sync is somewhat useful. I hate how I can't place my work (pdf) files in an order I want, along with movies and music unless it is sync 'd the apple way.

I was considering the note3, however, I really don't need a phone that size and I think the 5s is adequate for day to day usage, also have a number of work app that preclude me from switching to andoid, if I did it would equal a rather tempestuous and intensive task.
with my nexus 7 FHD combined with an iphone is perfect!

The nexus is amazing, like the andoid ecosystem, had to toot to use USB oTG, love how I can customize everything, and it feels do much snappier, I really love swift key - much more useful than Siri or google voice.

Chrome is outstanding on the nexus - I was never a fan of safari, rarely use this on my mac either. Google maps is a non brainier. , but feel more integrated into the os than on ios.

The screen is beautiful, I ripped a bluray to a 8gb file full 1080p and the results were outstanding! Also tried a 4k video downloaded directly on the nexus, and the results far surpassed the ipad

I love the form factor, not as pretty as the ipad, however for me far more functional to my needs!

As a diehard apple fanboi for many years, my friends and family were astounded that I sheepishly pulled out a nexus to read some work, browse the web

I think if individuals like me are slowly drifting away from the apple paradigm, without sounding cliched: this surely reflects apple poor choice of recent decisions on the direction the company is taking post Jobs. I an currently waiting for a 13rMBP and Mac Pro refreshes, but could my loyalty with apple be fading? The alternative of win 8 for me , is unbearable, however, andoid has filled a void that the Ipad simply couldn't.

I actually sold my Nexus 7 and kept the iPad mini. The screen on the Nexus was nice but too small and I really disliked the 16:9 format in a display that size. Android also has very few apps optimized for tablets compared to iOS and the battery didn't last nearly as long. As for the Nexus destroying the mini, just wait. The mini 2 will run circles around the Nexus once it's released, especially if it comes with the rumored A7x chip.

I'm going to flip flop a bit and say the nexus 7 has more merit than I originally thought. I have a buddy at work with a nexus 7 and it's actually pretty good.

He has a PS3 controller attached and a Roocase and it's all around a fun little package. The size works well too.

For a cheap, disposal, all around tablet you can actually throw in your back pocket, and hold easy while on the bowl, it works. iPad killer? Not even close, but it doesn't have to be to be a good buy.

I sold my mini when I got my Nexus 7. I'll likely give the Nexus 7 away as a present at Christmas and will pick up a retina Mini. I much prefer tablet experience of iOS but the screen is much better on the nexus 7 than the current mini.
