I’ve now had to reboot 8 times since launch day on my 12.9. WiFi freezes up. Will not turn off even when I turn it off. Cellular will not appear. Web pages won’t load. Works perfect after reboot. Every time that talk happened to me was while using the USB-C to 3.5 headphone adapter. It hasn’t happened any other time while not using the adapter. If this is really an issue, can it be fixed with a software update? I’d hate for this to happen while I’m teaching from my iPad.

Edit.. I can’t replicate the issue while charging or while nothing is attached to the USB-C port.

Well, I have my iPad Pro 11”, rapidly nearing the end of its 14-day return window, all boxed-up and ready to be shipped back to Apple.

I have decided that once the return/refund is processed that I will order a non-Touch Bar 13” MacBook Pro instead; hopefully it does not exhibit this same issue.

So I did a test. I had photos importing 45 min of videos from my Sony 4K video camera over a USB-C to USB-A adapter (one I got from Anker) with a short USB-A to mini USB port. I also had safari up as a 30% right side app with a continuous stock ticker updating over WiFi. No interruptions at all.

I have also been consistently watching Netflix each night with my Bose sports earbuds connected to apples 3.5mm to USB-C adapter with no WiFi issues.

Neither time was I connected to power (the Sony camcorder was powered by an AC adapter during download)

I bet if you used the adapter on the Mac it would do the same. Macs has usb issues as well so it may not be the iPads fault. Yes the Mac has a headphone jack but still.

A bit of dust can get under any device in production as well. Can happen to the next iPhone, iPad etc.

I don’t plan on returning mine at all, since I came from the iPad Air this thing is everything I want in an iPad. But yeah this WiFi thing is a bit of a pain but it is what it is.

I used the usb c hub (HDMI,USB,Ethernet) that i used for the iPad on the Macbook with 1 usb C port. No issues on the Macbook but the issue came up on the IPad. The usb C hub did run a bit hotter than it did on the Macbook thou.

Have you tried letting the Ipad go to sleep and resume from sleep after a while? While having the usb C to 3.5 mm adapter plugged in

I don’t lose WiFi connection while the adapter is plugged in either. I can use the iPad all day with the adapter plugged in.

To be clear, I only lose WiFi when I put my iPad to sleep with the dongle still plugged in.

If the adapter is still plugged in when the iPad wakes,it will have lost its WiFi connection. Only when it sleeps/wakes.

I stated this in my initial post.

Has all the people affected raised this as an issue with Apple via their feedback page?

I had a play last night with the new 11" and a USB-C Hub. No audio port but did try the HDMI output to TV and streamed video content flawlessly. I also started streaming online music then used the SD Card reader on the hub to import a bunch of RAW images into Photos - again worked flawlessly - both the music streaming and image import.

What I will need to do is try the same with the hub attached when sleeping then wake and see if Wifi connects.

Imo I’m sure this can be remedied with software if it only happens when it goes to sleep

Otherwise it would cut out as soon as you plug in the adapter I would think.

I hope. It doesn’t bother me too much now that I know what the issue is. And it’s onky when my iPad is on my desk and plugged into my computer speakers. So I just unplug the dongle after use.

I guess it could be a real pain for others. So yeah hoping a software fix is in the works.

Noticing this only happens for me if there is nothing playing through my headphones. If I'm listening and it goes to sleep wifi remains functional.

Hello all, just posting to see if anyone else has been experiencing this annoying bug since release.

12.9” WiFi only 64 gb. Set up as new.

iPad will be working great, as advertised. Let it sleep a few minutes then go to use it and it’s unresponsive to the WiFi network. It will show connected but the iPad just won’t do anything.

Safari will just load, YouTube won’t open etc. apps will just loop like it’s going to connect but it won’t.

I had to restart the device every time. Does the trick as the iPad works fine again. Probably happened 3 times in a week. But once yesterday and again this evening.

This time I only put the iPad down a few minutes before waking it up to find it won’t connect to the internet even though it’s on the network.
Wait, you got a USB-C to headphone adapter?

Further data points.

Behavior is the same if I use a usb headphone amp via usb-a to usb-c adapter. Lose network connection when device goes to sleep with nothing playing, retain it if device sleeps while playing.

Same behavior as well using a usb-c hub even when using an Ethernet connection rather than wifi - so long as I still have the usb-dac connected.

If I have the usb-c hub connected, but the DAC disconnected, there is no loss of network connectivity.

So in short, all three conditions must happen for this to occur:

1. USB C to audio dongle/DAC in use
2. No audio playing at all
3. Device going to sleep

Did I summarise this correctly?

That appears to be the case.

Ah thanks, this makes sense now. I recall that when I was testing the iPad Pro 2018, I had all three conditions happening at once only on one occasion which led to this bug. Most of the other times, I was either not using the USB C to audio dongle (I was testing USB C to HDMI), I made sure audio is playing (needed for gameplay), or simply did not let the device sleep by itself as that affects gameplay. As for Internet connection, my tests are mostly done on Wifi, except for AirPlay in which I used Gigabit Ethernet connection to ensure smooth data flow to my Apple TV 4K

This sounds like a specific software bug at this point since my tests with USB C to HDMI did not lead to this issue; had it been a hardware issue with the USB C ports, we will be seeing more complaints by now as it would have affected all sorts of USB C accessories

I would be actively working on my iPad and listening to music or other audio when it would happen. So it has nothing to do with sleep. And audio WAS playing when it occurred. For me at least it happens when I am actively using my iPad and suddenly no network; even though WiFi icon shows full bars. Unplug 10 seconds and network returns. Reconnect and continue working using headphones until it occurs again. Usually every 2 to 4 hours of use.

So out of these 3 only (1) is correct for me.

Maybe Apple will release their own branded version of this--for $19.99

Time to replace the bean-counter on the top of this mess!
