"The bend is the result of a cooling process involving the iPad Pro’s metal and plastic components during manufacturing, according to Apple. Both sizes of the new iPad Pro can exhibit it." – The Verge

It's been confirmed since Dec 19. The dilemma is Apple has confirmed, but not given official statements or explanations, so there's still some internet doubt as to the validity of this article because some people are saying The Verge can't be trusted.

Have you tried returning it during your 14-day return window? Perhaps ask Apple Store employees to specifically find you a bent one. Bonus points if you film it for your YouTube Pranks channel.

That Verge link has two pictures of VERY different bends happening. That first one is absolutely a non-issue, and what Apple is talking about. That second image I guarantee was not like that out of the box. So yes, The Verge can't be trusted because they're equating those two images as being Apple's issue.

What Apple has acknowledged as bending is actually warping. The metal is warping in the cooling process the way a cookie sheet will, if not made of the right thickness and materials, when heated or cooled. Logic dictates that if the iPad is warping in the cooling process, if the right conditions are applied after sale, the iPad could warp or continue to warp. Note that those conditions have nothing to do with drops, stomps, or other abuse.

So, IMO, Apple needs to own up to what they’ve done, fix their process, and replace warped devices at no charge if the customer requests it. What they don’t need to do is replace all bent devices. The warp is very specific and not the same as what you’ll see from a dropped or stepped-on device, and they can teach their staff to recognize the difference.

Because regardless of the scale of the bending issue, apple is getting really bad press right now, and with reports of them cutting production on phones, there stock dropping, etc, what do you think there solution will be?

1: Deny anything is wrong and act as if everything is normal.
2: Admit there might be a bending issue with the ipads, offer free replacements and or repairs
3: stop production all together, restart it with a stronger aluminum and redesign that gives it much more strength (i admit this is the most unlikely of choices)
4:Offer free cases or some sort of equivalent. (simular to how they offered free bumpers to the Iphone 4s)
5: Except there is a problem, adress it later on (like the iphone 6s bending and touch issue) and on the next model say there aluminum is stronger and tote it like a feature.

Frankly i feel apple really has to do something, because even the die hard apple sheep like me, cant defend them anymore and they are really begining to tank hard IMHO.

They havent innovated in a while, siri is a joke at this point, there raising the prices to the point where no one wants to shell that kind of money out for a device thats just slightly better then the last one...

something has to be done.

What do you think they will do about it?
[doublepost=1545689547][/doublepost]Siri is not a joke.
Apple is still very innovative — they make the world’s best mobile phone and tablet.
The competition has simply caught-up and competition is fierce.

They will send a QC team to check on the manufacturing process (unless thats what they already did) but besides that what they said about it being normal... is correct. Next iPad might just be made of 7000 aluminum and ion X glass for 10-year anniversary and to avoid any QC complaints.

Kallum.

Just wait, when you might need warranty repair for something else, they will deny it saying "your ipad is bent, therefore warranty is voided" just like when the battery replacement was voided if your screen was cracked"

This is part of my concern.

I had 2 brand new iPad pros that were bent out of the box, I never even turned them on!

I took them back to my local Apple Store, not only did they refuse to swap them over, the manager also refused to put in writing that I had brought them in to show they were bent out of the box!

Take pictures and call the Apple mothership.

My 11 inch is straight as can be. However my 12.9 inch, I had to send back because of bending.

Is your 11" the cellular version?

If so, I'd love to see a photo of the top short edge where the camera is, looking along the top edge.

I'm yet to a see a photo of a cellular iPad that's not bent.

Mine was non cellular 12.9 large bend. Took it to one store and they were rude and refused. Took to another store after opening case over the phone. Phone support had pre arranged for me to swap it. Manager at store stepped up and offered brand new model. Even let me keep spare charge cord.

No they aren't. They are saying 'there are reports of iPad Pros coming bent on social media' and then showing two photos representative of that. They even have a link in the caption, so you can judge for yourself. The Verge, as far as we know, had not misreported anything, so to say they can't be trusted, with no evidence to back that claim, is irrational.

Read this bit:

"The response comes after some customers on social media and several on the MacRumors forums have claimed their iPad Pros developed a small curve or bend without any mistreatment or abnormal stress being exerted on the metal casing. There are posts from people who believe it happened gradually over the course of normal, everyday use — or after transporting the iPad Pro in a backpack. And I’ve seen others from folks who are insistent their iPad came that way out of the box.

Apple is now saying that in some cases, the latter is true. And I can personally vouch for that: my 11-inch iPad Pro showed a bit of a curve after two weeks. Apple asked if I would send it their way so the engineering team could take a look. But the replacement 11-inch iPad Pro I received at Apple’s Downtown Brooklyn store exhibited a very slight bend in the aluminum as soon as I took off the wrapper."

So let's break down what Chris Welch (author) is saying

  1. I noticed my 11-inch iPad Pro exhibited a bend after two-weeks. I sent it to Apple's engineering team for examination
  2. Then the replacement 11-iPad Pro ALSO was bent straight out of the box. Here's a picture.
  3. But before sharing his own story, he says there are claims on MacRumors forums that iPad Pro bends developed without mistreatment, and shows a second picture in the article, linked to that claim.

So why you would take that as untrustworthy...does not compute. It's all transparent, no deception, you can read it with your own eyes and brain.

I fundamentally disagree with you. The way the article is laid out is incredibly misleading, equating Apple stating the bend is normal with that second picture. If you know anything about journalism, you’ll know that people absolutely equate the pictures with the headline. That second picture is NOTHING TO DO with the headline.

I agree that there are two things being conflated here. Some iPads are coming from the factory with a very slight bend, and this is what Apple was referring to. There have also been some iPads that have apparently bent during use, and I think these tend to be the more dramatic bends. While Apple does really need to improve their manufacturing process, and should replace iPads that are bent out of the box if the buyer so desires, I don't really find this issue to be that disturbing. The bend is slight and it supposedly happened during manufacturing, and won't get worse. What does worry me is the idea of people bending them in regular use. At this point we don't know if it's actually any more of an issue than it has been with previous models, because it's being confused with the above warping issue.

People are saying that they are afraid to put them in a bag, and even literally making steel cages to protect them, all of which seems like an insane overreaction to me at this point, but it's hard to say for sure.

you’ll know that people absolutely equate the pictures with the headline.

The headline is, "Apple confirms some iPad Pros ship slightly bent, but says it’s normal," and then it talks about supposed iPads that shipped slightly bent. Of course you equate the pictures with the headline, since thats the topic we're discussing.

We don't know anything about the second picture, meaning was it bent out of the box, and got worse? Is there a structural-rigidity problem? We don't know. But it wouldn't make sense for The Verge to NOT report the bending issue.

"Apple says its normal" is what Apple said. That's not The Verge's fault, it's Apple's for not taking time to investigate and make a better statement.

That second picture is NOTHING TO DO with the headline.

Yes, yes it does. They are both bent iPads. Saying they have "NOTHING TO DO" in all caps ignores that they are both bent and have to do with structural-rigidity weakness, whether it be from cooling or being in a bag. At this stage, we don't know. Nobody knows. And this report is just reporting the beginnings of everyone trying to figure this out. There is nothing conclusive about any statement in that article.

Whoa. This says a lot. Poor quality control is hurting them.

All stocks have been down. But as for the IPad Pro, it's too flimsy. Some come bent out of the box, some seem to bend on their own, and others just bend too easily. After all it is a portable device meant to be carried around and used. It's too flimsy. Many people will read about all this and figure the best plan is just don't buy it. Apple's rep for the best quality and after purchase service is going down the drain. The quality had been going south in recent years even before this. I wouldn't buy AAPL stock, and I'm glad i didn't buy the new Pro. I'm typing this on the Samsung Tab S4. This stupid thing is made out of glass of all things, but in a case it seems OK. At least it's flat.

Zip to do with quality. Reports of poor iPhone sales, Huawei-driven Apple boycott in China and trade war more likely. Probably a good time to buy though...

It has plenty to do with quality. All of their new machines throttle quickly and run hot. Everything they make now is overpriced, has that damn t2 chip that will become a problem, is too hot, too small, and only has good performance for around 1 minute.

Used FaceTime for the first time today for a little holiday greeting with the kid. With the Apple Folio on I didn't feel like the heat was a lot for about 15 minutes of communication. I of course don't how to measure performance. I can't really see how throttling would be able to be detected in everyday use. What apps would show performance degradation?

I love the look of the new iPad, but its really too bad that again we consumers are facing the bending issue once again

But they’re really not, are they.

Fear of bending is not a reason to avoid one of the best Apple products ever made.

My 3rd gen iPad Pro runs cooler than the 2nd gen one even after a lot of work, and the performance is consistently fast in demanding graphical apps that run in 120fps and 3d games. So I don’t know what they are talking about.

You convinced yourself into this narrative to justify your purchase decisions, but the truth is that a vast majority of people doesn’t read this forum or tech news and will never even know about these bend cases. They will buy their iPad Pros and enjoy the product.

iPad Pro 2018 is by far the best tablet on the market and a really great product. Hopefully, iOS13 will bring more functionality and make it even better. But it’s seriously awesome - it is not only insanely fast, it also runs cool, the screen is amazing, the new Pencil is great and it looks and feels superb. And as owners report on this forum, if you treat it normally - it won’t bend at all. Some people are acting like sitting on your tablets is now a common thing. It’s not, and previous ones would also bend if you subjected them to such abuse.

The new iPad Pro is the gadget of the year and one of the best Apple products ever made, in my opinion.

You literally said that the new pros weren't bending EVEN WHEN APPLE ADMITTED IT

So Apple’s share price drop is due to the quality of the iPad, a T2 “problem” and over-priced products? o_O Which stock market are you following?

That there are some issues with Apple products (heaven forbid that they’re also human), yes. That doesn’t mean that they’re not still great products. When you push the limits of design, issues will creep through. As to what the better option is, my money is on pushing the limits. How else would we have the great products we do?
