I can’t bare to watch a beautiful iPad Pro be destroyed - and won’t give him the extra revenue by watching
I don’t so much care if he’s bending them because I ordered three of these iPad pros earlier in the year and all of them came with scratch displays and chassis right out of the box. Apple quality control has gone way downhill. I return them and just kept using my 2018 models which still have no defects and there’s literally next to no difference aside from the LiDAR which isn’t even used at this point

iPad Pro 12.9.inch issue with display 2018

I have gone via the store route and gave feedback, also had a call from the store lead but he said he could do nothing so I’ve hit a wall, I’ve also tried the Apple.com/feedback route and “dead air” on that front also.

I have had this unit since Dec 2019 It has only had light usage never outside my house, but the display shows some spots of discolouration in the centre only noticeable when a black screen is rendered.

I thought this was a straightforward thing after taking it to the store for analysis, a round trip of almost 200 miles but the genius in the store dismissed the iPad straight away as he said it was bent. I cannot see where it is bent and I have solicited the views of others to confirm.

The genius said his confirmation was by eye only as per Apple guidelines, and he had sought a second opinion, and the only way forwards to resolve the display issues was for me to invest another £600+ into the device, which I clearly want to challenge.

I would expected a more scientific analysis from Apple, and given Apple made statements that the iPad Pro unit should be tolerant to some bending during normal usage the two viewpoints do not correlate.

Perhaps I am going mad with this, but I feel they have dismissed my issue without just cause, can anyone tell me a good way to confirm if the unit is actually bent, to what degree and confirm that this should directly cause the issue with the display

“Some bending” in Apple’s usage is less than half a millimeter (400 microns or .4 mm). I would think it would have to be bent by more than that to be seen at-a-glance.

As for testing, try placing it face down on a glass table if you have one, or try the box it came in. If it’s bent so much that they could quickly determine that visually, then you should see areas where the iPad doesn’t come in contact with the surface OR, perhaps it’ll wobble.

Yes I can but those pictures don't show much. Try what others suggested etc.

I don't see any bend from the ones you've posted but I also know that its not taken in the best possible way that could help us determine that :)

I’ve updated post... can you see?

I had respect for Jerry rig until he had to go political like everyone else in this video. Wont be watching anymore of his stupid videos from now on.

He gets political in almost every video.

I didn’t like how easy he went on the OnePlus Nord after it ”failed” his test. You can tell OnePlus is paying him.

Hey guys, sorry if this is repetitive or has been asked before but is the smart folio (just the regular one, not the keyboard one) and a tempered glass screen protector enough to prevent bending if I'm pretty gentle with the iPad? I am getting the 12.9 inch version. I will be keeping it inside of a sleeve when I carry it in my backpack.

No one really knows. While there have been a anecdotal information regarding people having bent iPads that have not been stressed and videos where the iPads are forcibly bent, there’s been no scientific test that apples pressure in a measurable repeatable way that can help determine how much energy is required to stress and deform an iPad.

For me, the 12 inch version in MY backpack with MY smart folio, it hasn’t bent. But, that’s not saying anything about how carefully I load my iPad, whether or not I take public transit, or even if I take it out of my house much. It could be that it might be enough for you, it COULD be that you find it bent after a number of weeks. Any additional material DOES make it sturdier, so it helps, but, without proper testing there’s no telling if your day to day usage will yield a deformed iPad.

The Smart Folio isn’t very Sturdy compared to the Magic Keyboard. It will bend if you put it in a backpack with lots of Books or if someone sits on it when it’s on the couch.

Hi all

I am really considering getting the iPad Pro 12.9” however I am really concerned about this bending issue...

I know you see a lot of reports online of it, but it doesn’t seem to be as huge of a focus on it like with the iPhone 6 Plus (which I also worried about getting but never had an issue).

Is this as big of an issue as reported on here or is it just literally the odd units have the defect?

thanks

Hi all

I am really interested in the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9” as a laptop replacement, however, the one niggling thing that’s putting me off is the whole bent out of the box issue... is this a widespread thing or is it literally just the odd units have the issue?

I know if mine come with a bend it will just make me want to return it immediately.

thanks

Got one six days ago. Flawless. No concerns here for the iPad or any Apple accessories. Check it when you unbox it and then don’t sit on it and it will be fine. These issues have been in the forums for so many releases on phones and tablets... The magic keyboard is tougher than the folio as others have noted. I switch them up depending on my convenience, not any worries about bending the iPad. Let your previous experience be your guide and enjoy.

I’d stay away - I had the 12.9 (2017 model), it went bad from unresponsive screen, was replaced by Apple and that one went bad too. Those are terrible odds.

If I remember correctly, I got two bad ones, too. First went bad under warranty, second went bad also under the extended warranty for the repair. Third one has been great since then.

My 2018 has been perfect since I bought it.

There have been no recent incidents of iPad Pros bent out of the box, so I wouldn't worry about it whatsoever.

I knew a little about this bending problem before I bought my 12.9 iPad Pro. I bought it used 1st. Generation just this year and got a bargain. I took with me, a spirit level to check that the front and back were straight. All was ok so I went ahead. It works perfectly well and l'm satisfied. Oh it has a screen protector fitted. If that makes any difference.

Just go look at the ones on display at virtually any electronics store. Do those bother you? If so, don't buy. If not, then no need to worry about what you're describing.

Exactly. Good point. Either all these users are suddenly quiet or this has been silently addressed not production, one can hope!

I’ve been thinking the same, maybe they addressed it with the 2020 iPad Pro update. It seems not many people have mentioned the bending issue recently.

I’d be careful drawing that conclusion since they’re only been out what, 6 months?

That is true, but didn’t the bending issue reports on the 2018 version occur within a couple of months?

I hope they have fixed it but it’s a difficult one to prove, especially since Apple don’t announce anything regarding fixing of such issues.

For me, the bending didn’t become an issue for several months or more after starting to use the iPads.
