I have replaced many many iPhones under Applecare over the phone. Who goes to an Apple Store? That's like walking into Times Square willingly. They ship you a phone and a you ship yours back in the box.
Well for some of us, (me), I like the Apple store. It’s a candy store for me. I like to just hang out and take it in. The iPhone and iPhone photography is my passion. For most folks, it’s just a phone. I don’t think that way, I like my iPhone looking new, not used or scratched up. That’s why I prefer a case and screen protector. If you guys don’t want to use either, then don’t. Those are my standards. My standards are just higher than everyone else’s I guess. Also if I choose to sell my iPhone, it’s resale value will be higher because of the condition it will be in.

Nope, you and others throughout this entire thread have tried to push the narrative on people “You don’t need a screen protector unless of course you don’t want scratches“ which is ridiculous and provably false.

I haven’t at all and it’s totally untruthful of you to suggest that. I’ve maintained my stance from my own experience where unless I have a screen protector, my phone would be covered in scratches. It all depends on how an individual treats their phone and to be frank, I don’t give a toss whether someone else uses one or not. Go and find someone else who might give you what you are looking for.

So what’s the benefit of having a screen protector that’s notched out? Does the full glass one interfere with any of the sensors or camera?

The notched out screen protectors make the notch more pronounced, almost 3D. A full screen detector (no notch) does not affect the sensors or the camera at all. My X was fine with the full screen protector!

My iPhone 12 Pro was scratching like crazy. Just got it replaced today because it had a hardware defect. We will see how this one fares.

I met up with a good friend today who also got an iPhone 12 Pro. She has been working from home. Hasn’t set the phone down face down. Gone out a few times and placed her phone in a leather and fabric lined pocket in her purse with no metal attachments. Somehow she has a deep, long scratch in her screen. No idea how hers happened. She had a launch day X that was scratch-free.

Seems unlikely that we were both so unlucky when we didn’t experience this on any other iPhone.

Thats such a stupid comment. That’s your opinion! I always use one and will always use one. Not using one is like not using gloves to protect your hands and skin during hard work. Not using a screen protector or case just means you don’t care about your investment. If you drop something heavy on your phone, the glass protector will save the iPhone glass. Yeah AppleCare is used for that also, but during this stupid pandemic, you’ll be lucky if you can get to an Apple store to have it replace.
So, somebody expresses their opinion, and you say it's a stupid comment because it's his opinion. Then you go on to express your own opinion. LOL

And here's my opinion: not using a screen protector does not mean that one does not care about their 'investment'. Personally, I never considered a mobile device an investment. Anyway, I do not use screen protectors and I've never had any problems with scratches. I want to fully enjoy my devices, and that means not degrading the screen quality and feel by adding a cheap piece of plastic or glass to it.

I see people here pay a premium for a beautiful phone that looks stunning and elegant, then they encase it in some military-like hard plastic vault of a case, and suddenly that phone looks like a toy walkie-talkie from the 1980s. I don't get it. Why buy such a nice device only to hide it in some ugly plastic cocoon?

To add to this, a phone by literal definition is not an investment. It’s a depreciating asset.

You’re not wrong for not wanting to enjoy your phone without protection on it, that’s your choice.

From my perspective, a glass screen protector does not degrade the screen quality or make it feel cheap. I can stand by that personally and even pledge it as a fact if I wanted to, I’m that confident. Glass is glass and my finger in a tempered glass screen protector is no different to a bare screen.

People use screen protectors and cases because the physical aesthetic of these beautiful phones would change very quickly and permanently without them. My phone would undoubtedly be smashed by now judging by the amount of times I’ve dropped it in the last 2 weeks. I’d rather have a phone that is immaculate once out of a case than a smashed device that would cost hundreds to repair. The phone would also be filthy dirty by the amount of fingerprints constantly on the device. You say you don’t get it but I think you do. Not everybody has the same use case for their phone and there is no correct answer as to what someone should do with their phone.

Bottom Line: iPhone 12 pro scratches easily. Whether it’s the oleophobic coating or the actual screen
Only way to prevent it is a screen protector
There are some good ones out there

I haven’t dropped a phone for years, why?

I meant why are you dropping them?
Just day to day use, accidents happen. My phone is exposed to anything from an office desk, harsh product testing environments, used in a production environment taking pictures of 400T hydraulic presses, to two young children who enjoy looking at things on my phone. It gets dropped here and there.

I don’t put my phone in a silk sleeve and worry about damaging it every time I put it down. It gets used primarily as a tool and is the reason I use a decent case and screen protector. My use case isn’t identical to everybody else’s and where I need protection, others may not. I’m sure a lot of people do use cases and screen protectors for piece of mind which is why such an expansive industry exists.

Well because some of us are clumsy and we don’t wanna drop it. I work in a fairly harsh environment so I don’t want to get it damaged by not having it in a case, but my cases are minimal and a lot of times I’ll take it out of the case when I get home to admire the phone as you mentioned. Look, I’m not here to are you or cause any conflict, I just don’t like to see other peoples phones get damaged. I usually take my phone out of the case and wipe it down with a moist terry cloth to get any of the oil or fingerprints off of it.

I did mention it was a stupid comment not because it was an opinion, but because the poster said nobody should use a screen protector ever like he was telling us no.

that’s OK if you don’t want to use a piece of glass on yours, like I’ve said the glass on mine has protected my phone several times already and without it I would have made several trips to the Apple Store to get the glass replaced. So for me they are essential.

It protects the notched area (with all of your cameras and sensors) from being scratched as well.

It's a necessity. IMO.

So just an update - I’ve owned two iPhone 12 Pros for about equal time.

My launch day 12 Pro was returned because the microphone and speaker suddenly stopped working. I reordered the exact same phone, storage, color, everything.

That same 12 Pro was scratching like a plastic Samsung Galaxy screen from the late 2000s. It had deep scratches within 1 week that I could feel with my fingernail. It looked like I had sandpaper pockets.

My new replacement 12 Pro is treated the exact same way. I even took it to the very dusty, rocky Joshua Tree over the weekend. However, this second phone doesn’t have any scratches. Not even micro scratches you can only see in the sun. It’s perfect.

I noticed a new scratch every 1-2 days on the launch day 12 Pro. I don’t think it was just bad luck for a week and a half. I honestly feel there was a bad batch of screens and that’s where the discrepancy in this thread came from.

I had scratches within a couple days. I have not returned it, not sure how I feel about returning it.

I wasn’t interested in returning the original phone until the mic and speaker went out. At that point I was feeling weird about that specific phone so I didn’t mind returning it to be refurbished

I bought the ESR full screen protector to replace the Spigen notched protector I installed on my iPhone at launch. I took the Spigen off and began cleaning the screen and noticed a scratch across the notch which ironically is the only part of the screen that has been exposed. The phone has never been in pockets with anything else and there are no scratches at all on the Spigen I took off.

These screens really are quite soft it seems and thankfully this scratch can’t be seen now the ESR protector has been put on. There’s no way I’d use this phone without one.

Put an ESR full screen protector on the second I opened it up. Before I even turned it on for the 1st time. I don’t even know why they made the ones with the notches.
