Thats such a stupid comment. That’s your opinion! I always use one and will always use one. Not using one is like not using gloves to protect your hands and skin during hard work. Not using a screen protector or case just means you don’t care about your investment. If you drop something heavy on your phone, the glass protector will save the iPhone glass. Yeah AppleCare is used for that also, but during this stupid pandemic, you’ll be lucky if you can get to an Apple store to have it replace.
Overwhelming majority of people use iPhones without them. Because iPhones don't need them. If you're going to post this nonsense, I'll just respond with reality.

glass scratches

the less likely a glass is to shatter, the more likely it is to scratch

Apple has focused on shatter resistance which means they won’t make any gains on scratch resistance

if microscratches bother you, use a screen protector. simple as that

I feel I need to ask for a source on that please? I know a few people who don’t use a screen protector, but just from my small anecdotal snippet it’s not the ‘vast majority’. I’d be interested to see a survey on that as it’s not something I have ever been asked or seen surveyed.

You can’t say ‘iPhones don’t need them’, because it doesn’t have a one size fits all use case. I use a screen protector because my phone does need one. I scratch the screen protector with my usage and I have the luxury of being able to replace that element. For those that don’t need them, that is totally acceptable too. There is no correct answer to this, and that is fact.

Everyone saying it scratches easier due to it being a stronger material well you're very wrong. Jerry did the test and at level 6 as all phones it did scratch but the marks are less on level 6 than the competition so get your facts right.
I won't be using the glass protection but I'll be using the Tech21 filme protection, to avoid any micro scratches (as I've done on all my phone's).
Shatter resistance isn't necessary for the iPhone 12 that's for sure, you're wasting your time with any of those glass protections.

Vast majority is right. He's right you know, screen protectors are like plastic on furniture. I know a few old people have it but I rarely see it.

I have replaced many many iPhones under Applecare over the phone. Who goes to an Apple Store? That's like walking into Times Square willingly. They ship you a phone and a you ship yours back in the box.

To you, me and many others hare, it is that simple. However, there is a segment of users here who refuse to accept reality and expect a scratch proof screen, as well as a screen that is hard to shatter. And many of these same folks go naked and then complain when their new screen gets micro scratches.

So far 2 weeks in for the iPhone 12 Pro (which I did initiate the return but will send it out once I receive the 12 Pro max), no screen protectors and still no scratches on the screen *Knock on wood

It’s totally the opposite in my experience. From my own observations it’s very few people that in encounter that don’t use cases or screen protectors.

So that would suggest there is no ‘right’ answer after all.

Nah it's just the simple reality that people have used these phones for years without scratching them. People throw them in their pocket, their purse, their cupholder. Not scratched. They just don't scratch unless they are dropped or abused. Period.

Oh look here's my wife's iPhone X that's been not especially cared for since 2017. Not a single scratch, not even a micro scratch, anywhere on the display. Imagine that. You wouldn't think it possible based on the hysteria of the screen protector crowd. Except it is... in fact, it's the norm for the iPhone market.

Lol. There is a huge difference between cases and screen protectors. To even lump them together like this indicates you're trolling, which I've suspected for the last few comments. Or you're just that wrapped up in your own experience that you can't see past it. Virtually everyone uses a case, whereas hardly anyone uses a screen protector. I'd wager screen protector is about as popular as caseless.

I have no doubt there are a lot of people that make up the naked screen group. If someone wants to go naked and accept the risks involved, I am happy for them. My beef, as it were, is with the many of the tech nerds here who educate themselves about every little nance of the phone and make post after post on here complaining about getting scratches after going naked.

Frankly I'm more bothered by the people who push screen protectors onto people, which they clearly do not need. Years of experience plus annual scratch tests of every new model prove beyond any reasonable doubt that no one needs a screen protector. All anyone needs is to treat their device with some degree of care, and be honest about it when you drop it down the stairs and find a scratch.

So you are ok to be wrapped in your own experience to support your claim but I’m not allowed to share my experience and suggest there is no definitive answer because it differs from yours?

You think I’m trolling because I’ve joined in on this discussion and tried to be objective? Let’s see if the mods agree with you then.

How about those people who want to go without a screen protector do that and those that know they probably would scratch their device, use a screen protector? It’s a very simple equation with two very correct answers. Nobody needs a screen protector if they don’t want one and nobody should be told they don’t need one. It’s the beauty of making your own decisions that don’t affect anybody else.

Vast majority is right. He's right you know, screen protectors are like plastic on furniture. I know a few old people have it but I rarely see it.

I travel extensively for work (pre-covid). As a phone-nerd, I always take note of what phones/accessories people in airport lounges are using. In my own anecdotal experience being many thousands of iPhones, I'd say the overwhelming majority of them are in cases. The number is so overwhelming that when I see a careless iPhone it really sticks out. I think in the past year I've seen maybe 5-10 uncased phones among thousands of phones in cases.

Screen-protectors are a very different animal. They are of course harder to spot when correctly applied (especially in conjunction with a case). I'd say in my own experience, I do see relatively few screen protectors out there. Maybe no more than 15-20% of phones I encounter?

Since it is fair to assume all models of the same phone have the same scratch-resistance, I think there are several things at play here:
  • Some people are just plain less "anal" about their phones. Unless someone is obsessively studying their device with the screen off from certain angles, they may never notice scratches.
  • Depending on where you live, and what you come in contact with you may have less issues. Someone living in a sandy or beach area will almost certainly get more sand-related scratches. People who wear diamond earrings/rings will almost certainly have more scratches.
  • How you handle your phone will have an influence. I see plenty of people who literally toss their phones face down on any surface, no matter how dirty, hard, sandy etc. This will of course increase the scratching potential. I have some friends who keep their phone in pockets or purses along with keys/loose change/firearms, other phones etc. I suspect these folks get more scratches, but simply aren't as sensitive to it.
  • Personally, I've been using phones since the old plastic screen days of the old pre-iPhone "smart phones." I always had a screen protector on my old Palm devices because I was using the stylus with them. Since iPhone launched I've never used a screen protector with any of my phones... never had a scratch that I could notice. Maybe I'm less sensitive? Maybe I just am more careful in how I put it down? Who knows.

One thing is for certain, it is hard to reconcile people who never get scratches... and those who have phones that are scratched to hell. All things being equal, SOMETHING in the environment and/or the usage must be causing abnormal scratching on some devices.

I mean, we are all in the position where we can only comment on our own observations as I don’t think data exists that gives a fair indicator on whether a majority use or don’t use screen protectors. This isn’t really a debate I need to continue with though as I think I’ve engaged enough with this topic by now. Whether lots of people use them or don’t, doesn’t really impact me and I don’t know why we need to try and convince each other? A bit bored of screen protectors now and no disrespect to anyone here but I may bow out now. I might try and find a really interesting thread debating the stickiness of some rubber cases instead lol. :)

Wasn't trying to convince anyone, just pointing out what I see. I bought a screen protector 3 pack for my wife's incoming Pro Max. Even though she has never had a scratch, a friend on her trip to China last Nov applied one for her. Now she likes them.

I'm indifferent, may try one may not... dunno. I think it boils down to how sensitive each person is, and is ultimately a personal decision as you pointed out.

Nope, you and others throughout this entire thread have tried to push the narrative on people “You don’t need a screen protector unless of course you don’t want scratches“ which is ridiculous and provably false.

After much consternation, that's the way I'll go with my Max, with a solid case. Always in a front pocket with no keys, pebbles or sand. Don't drop it. :) Since I'm at home a lot and older (and don't get drunk) have a good shot at minimizing scratches. If I do get a small scratch or two, it'll lessen the resale value a bit, oh well.
