I'm pretty much sold on the 5.4" already if those are the specs. Perfect upgrade from an iPhone 8. I like the screen size as its just a bit bigger.

I have been following their pricing. Pre Corona it would have been 799. Post Corona, it’s hard to predict. But 649 still seems unlikely

even without Corona there is no way that you've been following their pricing if you say 799 lol

iPhone XR was at 749
iPhone 11 was at 699
what's the point of making it at $799

they did it with macbooks too

started at 1199
then followed by 1099
latest is back to original price of 999 (the original base price of macbook air series)

the best selling phones based on units sold goes to iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, big reason is the price cut
their base iPhone:

started at 749
then followed by 699
latest is back to its original price of 649 (the original base price of iPhone 6 series)

even the sources of the leaker said it that it would be $649 and that's coming from someone who is very close to the person that is working within Apple the company.

I had a feeling 5.4 would have been 799. With the new Apple I was expecting 699+. I’d be surprised if it’s just 649.
I think Apple realized they've been starting to price out a lot of their customers even pre-Corona. XR $749 to 11 $699 got a $50 price drop. I doubt they would've done that if they were meeting their sales targets at $749.

Splitting the mainstream back to "Regular" and "Plus" means they have a latest model phone in the $600-700 range (probably a sweet spot for a lot of their customers) and can move up the Plus pricing back to $750+.

iPhone 12 5.4” at $649 is going to be an absolute juggernaut. My plan is to swap in my 2020 SE for one.

I like your plan. Curious though, the big change I see for you isn’t necessarily the different features/form factor or price, but you’re essentially switching from touch ID to face ID, Usually users prefer touch ID or Face ID, then they tend to leave it at that. Do you have a preference of touch ID or Face ID? If it was me, I would prefer to stick with one version of biometric security, which obviously would be Face ID given that’s Apples future at this point, until they can offer both touch ID embedded under the display alongside Face ID co-existing together.

I think the SE2 and 5.4” iPhone 12 will be split like you said with the ID preference but also the cost. I have a feeling the SE2 will appeal massively to the business sector due to its lower cost in the market. Sales fleets etc and company devices where businesses always look to save money will be equipping staff with up to date products with a lower price.

I think the iPhone market is now split into so many camps. You have those who lover TouchID and the classic form factor, those who want FaceID and all the important new features in an affordable price, and finally those who want to pay the added premium for something slightly better again. One thing is for certain, Apple for the first time ever have an iPhone line with a very strong approach to satisfying almost everybody (based on 2020 rumours). :)

Ultimately, TouchID to FaceID is something one can adapt to.

For me, devices were either just too big (XR/11) or too expensive (XS/11 Pro). A $649 iPhone 12 5.4" solves both issues.

I’m ok with either. I’ve been using an iPhone XS since last year and I loved it. I had a little mishap involving steam that rendered the Face ID system inoperable, so I figured I’d just swap it for this SE for a while. The battery life is noticeably better, as is the camera. The SE feels much smaller and lighter than the XS in the hand, which is great.

The taller screen of the XS was nice, but the cropped off corners and the notch were bothersome sometimes. The OLED screen was nice in low light, although it had more of a color shift when tilted even a tiny bit. Sometimes the difference from the perspective between both eyes made it seem like it was shimmering or something.

Face ID works really well, but not with a mask, not sideways, and not from a weird angle like when it was on a table not right beneath me. Touch ID works really well, but not if my fingers are the least bit wet, so I have to dry them off very thoroughly after washing my hands, doing dishes or showering. Neither is perfect, but generally I prefer Face ID.

I like the newer swipe UI, but then again the white bar at the bottom of the screen was annoying sometimes. The good old home button interface works just fine.

The 5.4” has my name written all over it. Can’t wait for a small(ish) phone with full-size screen!

I’m liking this pricing.

I’m set on either the iPhone 12 5.4 or the 6.1 but if the pro series has 120hz refresh rate I’m going to have get that probably ugh LOL.

Without a shadow of doubt the iPhone 12 5.4” and 6.1” will be the big sellers, especially as they are rumoured to now have OLED. There wasn’t a huge difference between the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro and this year the difference sounds even smaller again.
