With Apple, you're lucky if the advancements are barely noticeable. For many, the "barely noticeable" advancements have been overshadowed by "terribly noticeable" downsides. Example: Moving from a weight of 6.07 ounces with the iPhone 6 Plus to 7.27 ounces with the 14 Max--not to mention increase in thickness (and square edges)--are real-world downsides when you're talking about a device intended to be carried around all day and held easily.

E-SIM only for the USA? I'd say people should vote no with their money but they won't. Apple will have full control and carriers are going to have a blast with confused callers. I'm going through the nightmare of switching back to physical SIM. I have no 5G over a week later.

It’s an odd direction. Is it because they assume Americans won’t travel? In Europe it’s common to buy sims when moving between different countries.

Apple does not seem to care. Equality of devices isn't even on par. Apple is slowly going to less options and I hope nobody but Samsung follow suit. We know they will. I just see the trouble I'm going through of losing 5G after going from E-SIM to physical SIM. The threads online are going to be nuts.

I was going to pass on the 14, but Tmo gave me $2k for an 11 pro and a 12 pro max. Thats a no brainer. I don't swap sims as Tmo has me covered anywhere in the world with data. So Im on the 14 pro max train now.

I just put a new screen protector on my mint condition 13 Pro. As with every other year, I don't see enough reason to upgrade yet I still have a 14 Pro Max in Space Black sitting in my Apple Store app cart. I just recently got a new vehicle so I'm telling myself once I get that paid off I'll reward myself with a new phone.

Wish me luck!

I was recently medically retired due to side effects of cancer treatment. My iPhone XR battery is still at 90% & I seldom leave the house, except for medical care.I will be keeping the XR for another year.

The device that’s king here is iPad, I have a 2 year old iPad Air 4 & was recently gifted a refurbished M1 12.9 iPad Pro, along with an Apple Pencil 2, both items came from Amazon & the quality is amazin. I use the Pro to watch content & am also trying to slowly learn to use procreate. I am blessed to have such good family & friends.

I use the iPad Air 4 at night for relaxation and meditation videos.

Upgraded to a 14 Pro Max for the wife and a 14 Pro for myself. While I like the size of the Max I just don't feel like carrying an 'iPad Mini' around all day. It's just way too big and heavy unless you're a women and have a purse to carry it in.

My 8+ is in new condition. In fact, if I wanted a new phone, I could just put it back in the box, open it up, and enjoy the experience all over again. Bonus: no installation of stuff!
Unfortunately my 8+ is in bad condition and I need a proper successor but it has become incredibly difficult to pick the right one with all those different models, colors and high prices.

I feel that everyone has different needs & budgets. I like the size of the iPhone 14 Plus but frankly don’t have the budget for it. I also like the Pro max but how many pics of the cancer center am I going to take? In MY case a new phone is too much for my needs & budget, however I am not everyone & I hope that those who upgrade get a lot of joy with their new phones

oh & my 8+ is sitting dead in a desk drawer, sad, I liked that phone

Well said. All the best to you and positive thoughts to improved health.

It's that time of year again, when Apple and its legions of followers will make you think you need to separate yourself from $1,500 of hard-earned money to get a new phone.

Here's a checklist I use when thinking about acquiring a new phone.

1. Will the phone do anything I need? No.
2. With the new phone, will I end up doing exactly the same things I'm doing with my present phone? Yes.
3. Will the phone make me happier? No.
4. Will the phone make me poorer? Yes, in several ways.

Food for thought...

So today I got a new battery for my 8 Plus. Totally happy, and probably good for another 2 years. :)
I have the same thought process. I actually pre-ordered then asked myself the same questions and cancelled my order. I have a 12 Pro Max 256g works and looks perfect. I wish Apple would go on the same update years as the mac for the iPhone but I get it $$$$$$$.

I’ve dropped XS max on my face while surfing in bed before sleep. Couldn’t imagine upping that to 13 pro max beast class. 14pm looks almost identical to 13pm to 12pm, just in different color boxes.

And for some people, what's "barely noticeable" to you is significant to them. Your comment is wholly subjective.

Apples too "Smart" when it comes to applying pressure to its costumers,

But Apple is also very diligent when it comes to being "Right" for the people

So to say that all of these price hikes and yearly upgrades is all because of ourselves and what makes us happy.

People are comfortable when it comes to buying the next big $1,000 upgrade that they call it Pro/ Pro Max

Apple is setting the trend for the cellular market not because they want to or because they are greedy but because that's the best way to serve out their brand. And much more.

Are you speaking of the “useless gadget” that is a valuable tool for my livelihood? The useless gadget that fits in my pocket, which replaces the need for me to have to carry a computer, a camera and a phone? That useless gadget? Oh, I forgot, it actually also serves as a source of entertainment when needed as well. So yes Skippy, there are people who actually use their “useless gadgets” for more than playing Angry Birds. Go figure!

I didn’t realise the computer, camera and phone part of the iPhone stops working the moment a new iPhone is announced.

Their point is that these things can still be done on the current iPhone and there will be barely any perceivable difference in day to day use between them. But sure if you need to keep justifying it to yourself go right ahead.

Also just because the US gets good trade in values doesn’t mean the rest of the world does. In the UK you lose 50% of its value in one year.

Plus believe it or not there’s people out there who buy the latest and greatest just to say they have it. So this advice is good for those people who try to keep up with the Jones’ when in reality people couldn’t give two flying f**ks what iPhone you have.

Money I have saved by sticking happily with my 8+ and not lapping up Apple's annual "upgraded" phone every year:
X, 11, 12, 13, 14: ~$6500 (not including Apple Care). Including investment return on that money: ~$8,775. Including accessories not purchased: ~$9,775. Including hassle of acquisitions and realization that I was suckered into a new phone to do the same things I was doing on my previous phone: priceless.

You don’t strike me as being happy with that though otherwise you wouldn’t need to create a thread like this. I happily upgrade every 2 years and had the 8 Plus which was a great phone, but the 13 Pro I have now is a much better phone and camera despite still offering the same familiar iOS experience. Nobody forces people to get new phones and different people have different levels of value in their purchasing demands.

No doubt when you and I got the 8 Plus back in 2017 or whatever, there were people with iPhone 4’s and 5’s that thought it was hilarious because they could do the same things we were doing on those older iPhones. The 8 series iPhone is one edition away from losing iOS support too, so it’s days are numbered now sadly.

The OP has made a valid post in this topic and I want to thank you for this.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro which I use every day. This phone has served me well and is still serving me well.

When I watched the announcement of the iPhone 14 pro I was eager to get it. I thought dynamic island looks really cool even though I think it may distract me a lot. However that’s one of the features I was looking forward to in the new iPhone.

I decided to pre order the iPhone 14 pro when pre orders opened at 1pm in the U.K. I kept refreshing the Apple Store app as it kept saying to me about getting the finishing touches ready. I then eventually got access about 1.10pm and placed the order for a collection on launch day.

Then as the day went by I started to think about your post and also my use of my iPhone since I had it.

Thinking do I really need a better camera when the camera shots I take are just fine for my usage. Do I really need that extra battery usage when my iPhone lasts me all day as it is.

Do I really need any of the features of the new iPhone when my current iPhone is working fine and with iOS 16 i feel like my iPhone has just been refreshed with the new features iOS 16 has brought. So the answer is no to the above questions.

So decided to cancel my pre order. Now I can just save that money and spend it on something else in the future for something I may really need or want that I don’t currently already have. :)

You really come off as a person who only cares about money from creating threads like these every year, which is the impression I got form other people. Sure, investing money is important and I put money in my retirement and dividend stocks, but life is more about money and balance is key. If a new phone brings joy and one can afford it, then go ahead and buy it. Still, I think it’s silly to get a new and latest phone every year for minor improvement these days, even for someone who work in IT and enjoy playing around with technology.

I usually keep my phones for 4 years nowadays. I had an 8, but I needed more space since 64 GB wasn’t enough, so I upgraded to an 11 Pro 256GB, so I’m good for a while, but probably will upgrade to a 15 Pro, of course paid in full. iPhone 8 will probably lose iOS support next year, which is probably the only good reason for most people to upgrade, besides other reasons such as needing more space, better cameras, or a certain feature that the new model provides.
