How does the money from Apple care plus work ? In regards to getting it back that is.
Say you buy the AppleCare straight out for $200. If you go a year without using the AppleCare by taking it in for a claim, and you decide to upgrade after that year, you can get a $100 of it back.

You call Apple and tell them you want to talk to Account Services, so you can get a refund on the time left for your unused AppleCare.

If you pay month to month it doesn’t matter cause you just cancel when you’re done using it.

👊😁👍

It's prorated. If you paid for a year (or even monthly), cancel (via Apple support) as soon as you no longer want to cover that device. You'll get the refunded via the method of payment.

If you pay monthly, depending on when you cancel, you'll still get a prorated portion of that month back.

I do this every time I upgrade & just did it recently when moving to the 14 Pro. When I was speaking to the rep, she said so many people forget or simply don't cancel.

Thanks. What happens to those that pay monthly and forget to cancel when they trade their device in to Apple or Best Buy ?

You'll just be continued to be billed. You'll have to remove / cancel that AC+ plan. Unfortunately, the plan doesn't automatically cancel when you trade your phone in.

You can contact Apple Support at anytime, but the earlier the better, otherwise its just a wasted fee on a device that doesn't need coverage.

So lets say I do the monthly option on my 14 pro ($10/month) and cancel it next September; how much money would I get back (if any) as a refund for the prorated portion If I have not used any claims in the entire year.

If you purchased an AppleCare+ monthly subscription directly on your device, it's also treated like any other subscription, so you'll see it in listed in the "Subscriptions" section of your iPhone's Settings app, and can easily cancel it from there.

In theory, you'd get whatever portion of the current month you hadn't yet consumed. If your renewal date is September 30 and you canceled on September 15, you'd get around $5 back. However, I'm not sure if that's entirely correct as I canceled AppleCare+ for my last iPhone as soon as I traded it in and didn't receive a refund. Perhaps it's not automatic and you have to call Apple Support to arrange it.

As title suggests I’m so close to going full time caseless with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I spent the last 3 months using my 13 Pro Max without a case and found that once I got used to it in the hand it was perfectly comfortable to hold. I did not drop or bang it once (in fact have only dropped one iPhone since the 3).

So far with the 14 I have the Apple Leather case but do keep taking it off every now and again. I guess because it’s brand new “we” tend to baby our new phones but as I say, thinking of going caseless.

I have AppleCare Plus for any bad accidents. I do know that that does not cover scratches etc (which would drive me nuts!) but again, I’ve NEVER had any scratches on any of my. iPhones. I am careful with my iPhones and am always aware of where they are and where I place them down.
I'm in the same position that you are and went through the same thing with my iPhone 12 Pro Max when I first got it — picked up the leather case and had a sort of love-hate relationship with it, repeatedly taking it off at home and only putting it on when I was going out. About a year or so ago I eventually stopped putting it back on, and I carried that iPhone from that point onward.

After I picked the iPhone 14 Pro Max, I was debating continuing to go caseless, but I also couldn't resist picking up the ink leather case as it looks so nice against the deep purple that shows through the camera cutout. I also had a mall gift card that had been kicking around in my wallet for a while so it wasn't really an out-of-pocket expense.

I've left the case on for now mostly just because I do like the look and feel of it, but I'm not really concerned about the protection aspect, and it probably isn't going to stay on here for good.

Me too. Have the umber leather case on my pro max and feels great for now but I know it won’t last. Give it few more weeks maybe then it’ll be naked!

Don't do it. Reading this thread yesterday I almost decided to go case free with my two year old SE. tonight I launched the phone out the car onto the driveway. Best case scenario without the case would have been dents and scratches. A no case 14 though, PTSD hospitalization for sure.

Yeah, I would never go case-less. Let's say you just chip/dent your phone a little bit. AppleCare may not cover that. So then you've got a non-pristine case and your resale value plummets. All because you'd rather hold on to a slippery phone? Makes no sense to me.

AppleCare is useless if you are, say, on vacation. Unless you want to spend it sitting at the Genius Bar. Or what if you’re in a far flung locale? iPhones have certainly gotten tougher over the years but they will obviously break, sometimes quite easily. That’s not even talking about the possibility of a drop leading to a catastrophic failure and loss of data, (temporary, maybe) loss of 2FA, etc.

I personally despise cases but have learned to appreciate the leather cases and the way they age. They detract very little from the dimensions of the device, provide a nice tactile feel, increased protection to the screen when placing face down, and level out the camera bump. Plus, you can stash emergency $€£¥ inside the leather case.

I am still using my 14 Pro case-less. My XR was also case-less for 4 years and was in great condition.

I find that I am way more careful with my phone when it is case-less, however the 14 Pro does seem a little slippier than the XR. I have a RYAN London leather case on the way, and I'll give that a go for a while.

If I paid for apple care the last 12 years(which I didn't and never would have used it) I could buy a new phone out of pocket...I see that as a win lol..No case, no screen protector, no apple care

It’s not just about the loss of value, it’s about the inconvenience and lost time of a broken or destroyed device.

You don’t crash your car because you have insurance.

And in an age when phones are conduits to everything that we do (and depending on where you live, indeed, absolutely essential for your daily modern life existence) being cavalier that, “oh, I have AppleCare” seems like a poor justification for not using a case. Now, if you said “cases don’t work” or “the iPhone can handle a drop from 50m” or “the keys in my pocket won’t scratch the screen”, well that would be Spockian.

My family has had multiple phones shattered(front and back) in good cases and one was rendered useless(with no sign of physical damage) both from drops at pant pocket height..sooo do cases work? They do some of the time I guess but not always..

Yup, and that’s why this is a personal and subjective decision based on individual lifestyles.

I can get away with going caseless as I’m extremely careful with my iPhone. The larger 6.7-inch model is actually harder for me to drop, and I never put it into a pocket with anything else in it, so there’s nothing to scratch it.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, has not only a case, but also a screen protector because she often just tosses her iPhone into her purse or bag, regardless of what else is in there.

I think it’s kind of a trade off. A good case lets you handle the iPhone much more casually, but if you appreciate the aesthetics and like the naked look then you’re also likely somebody who is going to be very careful to preserve that look.

Sure, more damage likely with a case-less phone when dropped, but a case-less phone could mean you're less likely to drop it. Going by my experience two years ago, Apple's clear case was too slippery, but slid in easily in my pocket. Apple's silicone was too sticky. I felt I had to yank it out of pocket. Apple's leather was a good compromise, some protection and good balance of sticky and slippery, while not making the phone too bulky. But this year's leather it's not as good of a fit and the leather keys are very mushy. Granted I've only tried on 3, and another poster suggested I keep on trying until I get a good one. I've also used RhinoShield bumpers (2 years ago) which has a good amount of lip, it seems very protective, but it makes the phone a bit too wide for me to get a good grip plus the bumpers were slippery. I'll know better if I can go case-less year round when it's winter when my hands are cold and dry. I'm using a felt-lined sleeve now which is probably more protective than the leather and maybe more protective than the silicone and clear case, when I'm taking the phone out of my pocket. So the only danger is when I'm using the naked phone and it somehow gets knocked out of my hand(s). Not a big deal as I wouldn't use my phone, naked or cased, while standing in a crowded moving train. Is it a bit of a hassle to have to take the phone out and put in back in the sleeve every time I used it though.

I've never found a screen protector that didn't overtly deter from the quality of the screen image.
I never liked using screen protectors. Tried it once and absolutely hated how it deters from the quality resolution of the screen, and even the feel of the screen. I remember just taking it off and never tried using one since. That was years ago and never had a scratch, or any kind of damage to the screen since. I simply always use a case, and always put my phone in my right pocket with nothing else. My right pocket is my phone pocket - never put anything else in my pocket to rub up against the screen. To me screen protectors are totally unnecessary - unless you are someone who is careless with your phone

And always place the screen side towards your body. I also put a $20 and biz card under the case.
