$800 for a 60hz phone in 2024 is already crazy.
Other than slightly brighter display, nothing has really changed compared to 15 so it should keep the same price for the base models.
Essentially I think Apple want everyone to buy the Pros. Even if money is tight, the extra $200 buy you a device that isn't gimped and should last a year longer.

Still have my iPhone 7 here, why would I upgrade?

I got a 13 but I'm not going to upgrade until the phones get more than 8GB of RAM. With the developments we're seeing right now 8GB wont be enough for very long, maybe even immediately, I expect using AI will purge a lot of resident apps so they have to be reloaded.

The changes are not insignificant. Especially the RAM and larger battery.

100% agree. If 8GB is the absolute rock bottom base to run the initial low precision AI models, I'll also wait until Apple are selling Pros with more. I'm in no rush at all to upgrade as I have a 15PM.

Might just make the jump from my Pro 13 (the battery is basically dead at this point), though I don't really want a larger phone..

I was afraid the iPhone 16 was just going to be an iPhone 13SSS, but as soon as I saw the vertical camera lens arrangement, I immediately KNEW this was going to be a year filled with drastic and perhaps even daring design choices.

Other brands might be adding 5000+ mAh batteries to their phones, or 16 GB of RAM in a phone, or 100+ MP cameras, but those are all child's play compared to the truly exciting technological changes Apple has in store: vertical camera bars and a vaguely improved Siri. Now that's innovation.
Your /s is noted. Please realize (no /s) that "adding 5000+ mAh batteries to their phones, or 16 GB of RAM in a phone, or 100+ MP cameras" really are trivial, "all child's play" compared to the truly challenging technological changes needed to produce and sell one of the world's top smartphones in 2024.

My point is that none of those things (batteries...RAM...100+ MP cameras) provide value by themselves. The whole package of phone/OS/camera in one's pocket is what matters, and my expectation is that Apple will again in 2024 make the top iPhone best in the world or very close to it.

The changes are not insignificant. Especially the RAM and larger battery.

There are $300 phones with 8gb ram, 5000mh battery and 120hz display, so ofc 2% more battery capacity + 2gb low profile ram that costs like $2 is insignificant in 2024. this is not 2016 anymore.
at least there were some real upgrades on 15 compared to 14.

Does Apple have a folding phone? Stylus? Camera (stills) is not the best out there. Quick charging? Expandable storage? Free/more cloud storage? Took some arm twisting to get Apple to switch to usb c. Hopefully the justice dept or the eu can nudge Apple towards a more competitive direction.

Apple non pro is priced at some flagship phones and is definitely not competitive. Siri is ****** bad. Android os is generally much better at AI especially at photo editing for the average users.
The point is that iPhone remains the best smartphone overall, or very close to it. Whining about some specific issue is just whining.

While we are whining, allow me to add my whine to wanting Apple Pencil support. ;~)

You shouldn’t. And why do you even need a 7? I suggest you look for an old rotary phone and use it with a landline. Or maybe just communicate through telegrams, or even smoke signals.

also, semaphore is an option…….
I have a friend that is still using a 6, so a 7 is 2 generations newer!

I’m using a 12 and I like to try to get at least four or five years out of each phone. I just had the battery replaced a few months ago to give myself more breathing room.

Do we still think Apple develops somewhat on a tick-tock cycle? If so I will try to wait until next year. But it’s unlikely the 12 makes it to 16.

Edit: whoops meant *18*!
I have the 12 Pro Max and had my battery replaced last year.

I think this’ll be a big year simply because of the neural cores getting a major upgrade and most of iOS 18 is reliant on those. Wife and I are planning this being our upgrade year. Kids are getting the hand me downs.

I would like to point how wrong to compare RAM size directly. I can explain.

Take iPhone XR (3GB) and iPhone XS (4GB) for example.
On the first glance it seems like difference is 25%. It is so, if we will count the whole RAM.
BUT. Let’s compare not the whole RAM, but the RAM that available after iOS took some resources to operate. For example, iOS took 1 GB. So we have 2 GB left in XR and 3 GB left in XS. It is 50% difference already, not 25%.
Then imagine that iOS inflated over time and now takes 2 GB to run. In case of XR we will have 1 GB left, and 2 GB left on XS. THIS IS 100% DIFFERENCE already, even it has only 25% difference in the specs.

This is why you should take as much RAM as you can on your budget. And that’s why you should not compare the RAM size without taking in account how much the system will take for itself.

"While the upgrades that the iPhone 16 offers over the iPhone 15 will likely be at the center of Apple's marketing strategy later this year, many users are on two-year upgrade cycles"

All these people on two year upgrade cycles…I’m on an 8 year upgrade cycle and am looking forward to moving on from my SE Gen 1.

It'll be nice to have a phone that doesn't go down to 10% as soon as I unplug it from the charger in the morning.
