Why do we need to have titanium on the phone? Doesn’t add any value and doesn’t look any different than aluminium. Just a stupid move to mess with the ego of the mind and trick people into something is better (which it’s not).

It's part of Tim Apple's 2030 carbon emission plan. Way better than aluminum, aside from being lighter.

The cost of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max's telephoto camera now stands at $30, a 380% increase over the previous model. Likewise, the titanium frame costs $50, a 43% increase over the stainless steel frame of previous devices. The A17 Pro chip comes in at $130, a 27% increase over the A16 Bionic chip.

I stopped reading after that.

This article was written as if Apple sells the iPhone in USA MSRP, worldwide.

There are 1.3b active iPhone users worldwide vs 150m in the USA, so approximately only 10% of iPhone pros are sold at $999/$1199.

Um.... * Website indicated Sales Tax included in price? Nearly every where else on planet earth has their Tax included in final retail price apart from the US. That is including Japan, China and Europe.

And that doesn't even include Import Tax which is not an consumer thing but reflected in final pricing.

Come on this is 2023 FFS.

I personally feel like the price has reached a ceiling. I mean these phones are amazing little devices, but I'm about ready once mine dies to just go back to a flip phone and use the saved money for an m3 laptop! ha ha. Sorry but the biggest laugh is how much they charge for these tiny ipads, the full size ipads do more, have bigger screens, work with the pen. Diminishing returns abound.

The problem is that there are many people who love high prices, because the more something costs, the more they can brag with the product. That is especially true with expensive cars. Imagine the iPhone would just cost $400. Then all those braggers would have to look somewhere else, because it would be "too cheap" in their opinion.

Porsche for example builds really good cars for the comparatively low price, but some people do not like the idea that their sports car costs "only" $150,000 while their neighbour has a $500,000 car. This irrational behaviour makes luxury companies rich.

Imagine someone had told you twenty years about that $999 would a normal price for a phone one day. You would have thought that is insane and to be honest you would have been right. It is insane. Just because everybody acts irrational, that does not make it any more rational.

My latest phone was just €22.99 and it has a battery life of three weeks.

God forbid Apple only make 40% or 45% profit margin on these devices…
How much less should they make? How much less should you make? Everything is relative. Apple the business must make money.

Because technological progress isn’t linear, and also not equally distributed. Semiconductors have had diminishing improvements for the past decade or so. Batteries also haven't been improving much. Physics is a bitch.
We need to get our hands on some more Roswell tech ASAP. 😁

In the light increasing costs for relevant parts it's Apple's choice to add an overpriced titantium frame no one asked for and no one cares about.

Completely with you. Especially entry-level Macs have an insane value currently. I am really surprised how Apple manages to keep the prices for iPhones at that elevated level.

This doesn’t include development costs, shipping, assembly, and all the other overhead that comes with running an international business. I’m sure the profits are good, but why not give credit where credit is due? The cost went up significantly on their end and not at all for us this year.

I know it won’t happen, but I honestly wouldn’t care if they used aluminum for the Pro models to cut costs. I’d actually prefer it.

Higher capacity models have higher margins as NAND prices are significantly lower than what Apple charges at retail. Apple already took care of raising their average margins this generation by eliminating the 128 GB Pro Max and maintaining the price of the 256 Pro Max model. They'll likely do the same next year with the 16 Pro (non Max) model.

So that's the cost of the components in the phones, so what's the labor cost, packaging, etc.? That would be the total cost of the phones, before shipping and selling costs.

What's funny is the UAW strike, and the claims by the union about the profits made by the D3 automakers. Their profit margins aren't really that high (single digits in some cases). Not nearly as high as those of the makers of electronics.

Because (contrary to what those who come to Apple's defense say) there is a significant boutique factor to the iPhone. Note, I didn't say the iPhone is ONLY a boutique device, but that it is a significant factor. iPhones offer terrific functionality but functionality alone isn't what allows Apple to charge as much as they do.

So yes, Apple has to conjure up marketing points (like titanium) as a way to encourage people to upgrade before they NEED to, and to justify the increase in cost. Using titanium instead of aluminum certainly costs more to produce, but not as much as Apple charges for the increase.

Apple will keep doing this (and charging obscene (IMO) upcharges for larger storage options) until and unless customers stick to the base configurations in large enough numbers to affect their bottom line.

The base model, S23 Ultra, costs over 1300€, without having the costs of developing the operating system, App Store or iCloud, maintenance of data centers, hardware is developed by Qualcomm (processor, sensors, modem), and I could continue, from lag to disastrous UI / UX.

I don’t understand why people forget that they are more expensive phones than the iPhone with no reason to be more expensive.
You are right, the Iphone is too cheap

Or, Apple could just release a new phone when it has something meaningful to add. This would improve costs over time, lower overhead and be far “greener”. The yearly cycle is only there to push constant sales and is for Apple’s benefit, not the consumer.
That’s a great business plan, we’ll release something when we are ready. /s

I imagine Apple, and many Apple fans, would argue that there are meaningful additions or improvements to the iPhone every year. Who/what determines if there's something meaningful?

The yearly cycle is only there to push constant sales and is for Apple’s benefit, not the consumer.

If the yearly cycle is not also for the consumer's benefit, why do some many consumers buy new model iPhones each year?

The reality is that not everyone is on the same purchase cycle and when the time comes to buy a new phone whether it be after one year, three years, six years or whatever, many will want the latest model with the latest features possible especially if they plan to keep it a while. By offering a new phone every year, Apple provides that no matter where someone may be in their personal purchase cycle.

The 15 Pro Max is the best iPhone I have ever had, and I have had most of them since the first one. Worth every cent, and I'd happily have paid $200 more. Same with the Watch Ultra. You can easily spend the same on Samsung and get already obsolete crap.
