Not picking on Apple at all- just proactively covering the stuff fellow CONSUMERS come up with in favor of "good enough" (available for sale now) vs. the next hop... which is the very same stuff "we" came up with against 4K before Apple went 4K and against 1080p before Apple went 1080p.

I'm actually hoping Apple goes 8K so this next iPhone has something much more interesting than "a little faster", "a little bigger", etc. That should put a LOT more money in their vaults as some people are then moved to buy an 8K AppleTV and upgrade Macs to better edit/manage 8K video and more storage if they want to shoot in 8K and more cloud if they want to upload 8K video, etc... the same upgrade action chain that occurred when they embraced 4K. It's all very positive for Apple. 💰💰💰

The only fault I'll put to Apple is my own desire they LEAD the way instead of doing what they've done in the past... which is usually embracing the next tier about last... in spite of charging the most for the hardware. For example, premium Samsungs have already had 8K video capture for a couple of years now.

The reference to "Apple is never called out as stupid" when they DO embrace the next tier is another shot at fellow consumers arguing against advancing only up until Apple actually advances... and then apparently their feelings magically swing to the positive. That's no dig at Apple, only at how people take passionate stances one way that can then flip flop when Apple actually makes the move. See sentiment about phablets before Apple went phablets... or 4K before Apple went 4K... or 1080p before Apple went 1080p... or NFC before Apple Pay... etc. I suspect 8K is going to play out exactly the same way as all previous examples.

Virtually nobody will buy an 8K TV just because Apple adds 8K video recording. Nobody already does for viewing 48MP photos. Most people still watch only 1080p content.
Helpful reminder from a filmmaker / content creator: the benefits of 8K video are that you have extra resolution to play with for cropping/reframing when editing 4K video. I’m sure Apple can figure out some other cool use for it, too.

Can we start reducing the size of that Dynamic Island already? I think the 16 Pro will need some improvements in that area after 2 generations with it.
According to a leaked "display plans timeline" (or something like that) I do believe the 17 Pros will not have a pill (FaceID sensors) just a cutout for the selfie camera. And iPhone 19 would be a complete all display device with no cutouts.

This depends on Apple getting under-display Face ID and front camera working. It remains to be seen if they’ll succeed in that. I’m sure the original plan was to do that after the notch, but since it wasn’t that easy they went for the island instead to avoid stagnation.

I guess we’re going to have to wait until iPhone XX (20) to get some substantial changes (like get rid of the OLED displays)
Apple is making phone with bigger and bigger displays and you want them to remove the displays completely? I don’t see it happening

Why would anyone want a larger display? I wanted the small iPhone 16 plus, but it didn't have the better camera, so I'm the owner of an iPhone 15 plus Max. 😟

According to Ross Young's "display plans timeline", that is correct

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, according to
Ugh. I just went from 13 Mini to 15 Pro. While I love it in general and adjusted to the larger size better than I thought -- I'm still hitting plenty of awkward moments when trying to use it one-handed and just can't reach something on screen without employing a second hand. I don't mind adding a giant Max-sized phone the lineup, but the "regular" iPhone has gotten quite large enough, thanks.

What I don’t find plausible is the “capture button” rumor. It seems outside of Apple’s general approach to the phone. Adding more buttons is the opposite of their stated goal, which is a single seamless piece of glass. No buttons. So I’m calling BS on that one.

Reachability? I use it a lot on the Pro Max.

The next iPhone Pro needs to be at least 15 inches and have a massive action button on the back... so you can put it face down, and then place a frying pan or wock on it... this action button could also be pressed to answer calls or stand or dance on it to music... with haptic dance moves.

Please stop calling the 5X lens a "zoom" lens because it is not. It is a fixed focal length telephoto lens that is a 120mm equivalent. It is 5X the fixed focal length of the main lens which is 24mm equivalent. Any zooming that takes place is NOT optical zoom but digital zoom--it's a combination of sensor cropping and computational photograph which, if you're doing enlargements, compromises quality vs zoom that's achieved through optics.

The 5X lens replaced the 3X lens (77mm equivalent) which, unless you're heavily into wildlife and sports photography that benefit from that additional reach, is actually a step backward in the range of most photos that are shot, which is about 24-85. With the new 5X lens, all zooming from 1.1X to 4.9X is now handled as digital zoom by the main camera lens/sensor. The higher you push within that range, the greater the compromise in quality. At 5X zoom, the new 120mm lens takes over. For most photos, the better system is the old 3X lens, where the main camera lens/sensor handles 1.1x to 2,9x as digital zoom, and then the 77mm lens takes over.

IMO they should stop numbering iPhone models now, it’s getting ridiculous.

Here’s what I propose: iPhone (2024). Same naming convention as the Macs.
That sounds cumbersome to me. It's still a number, but it's a longer one.

This is probably kind of nitpicky, but since iOS and iPhones are updated every year now, I just wish they had the same version number.
