See, I’m glad I didn’t upgrade. Nothing enrages me more while enjoying a new device than seeing rumors about a new one.

I'm not sure if the people who say the Max is too big have ever owned one. For me it's perfect. Impossible to go back to a smaller model.

I have, and I didn't like it. I don't watch video on my phone nor play games, so the extra screen was worthless. It didn't comfortably fit in my pockets either since I don't wear Big Boy Buster Brown husky pants.

WiFi 7 is not coming to the next iPhone 16. I wish MR would realize that Apple has been slow to adopt WiFi and cellular standards.

WiFi 7 is likely to come in 2025 with the iPhone 17 but may arrive as late as 2026 for the iPhone 18.

Not exactly true. Apple send minimum of one year testing before another year for verification process and be ready for next iPhone. That is why it often felt like two years. And this is dependant on WiFi Solution ( in this case Broadcom ) readiness, along with whether the contract is being signed. If anyone has been keeping with Broadcom ( which not a single MR comments has ever shown that ) Broadcom are in negotiation battle with Apple every few years. This is the first time in the past 10 years Broadcom has a ready to go WiFI Solution ( Although likely not their 2nd Gen Solution but we will see ) and contract ready.

Not about time for 8K video capture yet?

48Megapixel cameras and 8K video easily go together. 8K TVs have been available for a few years now. Since M1, Apple has been spinning how silicon can handle multiple streams of 8K video at the same time. 8K-capable iDevice camera begets 8K AppleTVs and more robust Mac hardware needs to actually edit multiple streams of 8K at the same time. It also leads to an 8K (or will that be 10K?) ASD II and perhaps 12K Pro Monitor with $4K monitor stand?

I know, I know: "The chart" and "nobody can see..." and "99% don't want" and "until the entire Internet is sped up" and "until all video in the iTunes Store is available in 8K" and blah, blah, blah (all the same stuff we slung against Apple going 4K while they still clung to 1080p and going 1080p while they still clung to 720p, which immediately evaporates as soon as Apple chooses to make the leap.

Nevertheless, a video resolution upgrade is a very tangible upgrade (see 48mega-pixel camera) and higher resolution can drive people to want/need/believe they need to upgrade various other Apple hardware to take advantage of it, so there's lots of additional revenue potential in embracing 8K as the new peak resolution in Appleland. Last I checked, Apple likes revenue.
What are you intending on watching your glorious 8k footage natively on right now?

You got an 8k tv you are going to stand 3 inches from and pixel peep?

Or are you one of the 12 customers who bought Dells 8k monitor?

Does anyone feel like 6.7 is the perfect size, I'm not sure we need a 6.9... might as well start getting an iPad mini at that point.
No. Anything over 6 inches is hilariously big. Are you always wearing cargo pants with giant pockets just for your phone? If not, do you look like this?

Neither. If one records something in higher resolution, it plays as sharp as it can look at lower resolution (like my 4K main television or a 1080p television in another room). That just doesn't work as well the other way (shoot at todays standards and scale it up on tomorrow's standards). So for now, I would watch 8K masters on 4K or 1080p screens (or 5K computer screens).

But by the time I purchase my NEXT television, 8K will probably be THE mainstream option with hardly any 4K sets still for sale (as it is now with 1080p sets vs. 4K sets). So at that point in the future, accumulated 8K video will look great on a future 8K television... instead of scaling up 4K or 1080p video, which will not look as sharp.

There is no coming back from the future to re-shoot video one shoots today at future higher resolutions. I have precious home movies shot all the way back to the 1980s & 1990s on VHS cameras that looks terrible on today's much higher resolution screens. I thoroughly wish it was possible to take modern cameras back to those days to re-shoot that video at today's quality. This desire is simply projecting that same scenario forward: shoot it in 8K as soon as we can, watch it on whatever screens we have in 2023-24 but know it will look great on screens in 2028-2036 too.

I never understand our pessimism about advancing this part of tech. Nothing gets forced on anyone happy with the "as is" so this is only a benefit for those who desire something a little more than "as is." Nobody would have to buy new televisions or more storage or faster broadband or more iCloud, etc if they have no interest: they could keep shooting in 4K or 1080p or SD. iTunes rentals would still be available in a variety of formats so people could continue to download whatever they download now. Etc. But there's always pessimism about the next resolution hop... until Apple actually makes the hop and then it's as if no one ever felt the pessimism they expressed BEFORE the hop.

Back on page 1, there are also bullets talking up adopting wifi 7 and 5G advanced. The vast majority of people do not have wifi 7 equipment and it may take several years for the carriers to implement 5G advanced so anyone can use it. Strip those out of the rumor list, and iPhone 16 offers only "a little faster", "a slightly bigger screen" etc. Why bother with iPhone 16 at all if that's all it will be?

Every app available for iPhone runs on the current A-series SOC, so why bother advancing the A-series SOC any further? Every Mac app runs on M2, so why bother with M3? No apps leverage the ray tracing features just added yet so why bother adding ray tracing tech? Etc. Write that kind of stuff down and we can readily make cases for bringing on advances in tech. I want M3, I want ray tracing. But this ONE type of advancement is always met with pessimism until Apple makes the hop: it was the same regarding 1080p before Apple went 1080p and the same again about 4K before Apple went 4K.

NOBODY owns Vpro yet, but the latest iPhone can shoot spatial video for Vpro viewing. Apparently that's just fine since Apple has already adopted it. But we'll be quick to fault an option to shoot video at 8K... at least until Apple goes there... and they certainly will go there sooner or later.

While the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are still around 11 months away from launching, there are already several rumors about the devices. Below, we have recapped new features and changes expected for the devices so far.

iPhone-16-Side-Feature.jpg

These are some of the key changes rumored for the iPhone 16 Pro models as of October 2023:
  • Larger displays: The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, according to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. The devices are expected to have taller aspect ratios as part of this change. By comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively.
  • Capture Button: Apple plans to include a new "Capture Button" on all iPhone 16 models, according to pre-production information obtained by MacRumors. The button would be located below the power button, but its purpose is unknown. It has been speculated that it could be a dedicated shutter button for the camera.
  • 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens: The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera lens for higher-resolution photos with more detail when shooting in 0.5× mode, according to Jeff Pu, a tech analyst at Hong Kong investment firm Haitong International Securities.
  • Wi-Fi 7 support: The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will also support Wi-Fi 7, according to Pu. This would enable the devices to send and receive data over the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously, resulting in faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connectivity. Wi-Fi 7 is expected to offer peak data transfer speeds of over 40 Gbps, a 4× increase over Wi-Fi 6E.
  • A18 Pro chip: Apple's next-generation A18 Pro chip is expected to be manufactured with TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, known as N3E.
  • 5G Advanced: iPhone 16 Pro models will be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem for faster and more power efficient 5G connectivity, according to Pu. The modem supports the "5G Advanced" standard, which has been described as "the next phase of 5G" and an "evolution towards 6G."
  • 5x optical zoom on Pro model: The iPhone 15 Pro Max's tetraprism lens system with 5x optical zoom will expand to both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 Pro models in September 2024. Additional details about the devices should surface over the coming months, so be sure to keep tabs on our iPhone 16 roundup for the latest information.

If you plan to release an iPhone with a 6.9 screen, its better to introduce a foldable.

Capture button, better wide angle camera along with the bigger screen are good features/improvements. Looks like Natural, White and Black Titanium will be the standard colours. Wonder what the new colour will be.

Buy a cellular iPad Mini, install a Voip app for telephony, use buds with mic for calls and iPad Mini is your "fat" phone. I've been doing this for about a decade now and don't feel like I'm missing a thing... except pocket-ability. It works great... and costs much less than iPhone plus iPhone unlimited service... and generally doesn't go "long in tooth" as fast as iPhones either. My own jump was from iPad Mini 2 to 6. I suspect my next one will be Mini 9 or 10 out in 2028-2030.
Dude. This was my setup from 2010 to 2019 when I got my first iPhone, the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I started with the original iPad back in 2010. I was one of the first who bought it with the AT&T unlimited data plan for $25 a month that was discontinued a few months later, but I was grandfathered in on as long as I never let it lapse. I transferred it to the first iPad mini in 2012 which became my phone. It worked great. The iPad mini fit into my cargo pants pocket or a jacket pocket easily & the larger screen was so much nicer to surf the web on. I kept this setup until 2019 when my AT&T plan stopped because I missed a payment(forgot to update my credit card!). Anyway... I know I could have bought another data plan for my iPad mini... but they don't have unlimited data plans anymore, and I use A LOT of data! So now I use an iPhone with a $15 a month plan from Mint Mobile as my phone. I also set it up as a hotspot & still use my iPad mini to surf the web. Sometimes I miss the old days of being iPad mini only. But things change.

I love my 15 pro max, first iPhone I’m considering keeping beyond one year, however if the shutter button is true, I would really want that, especially if it has the two step, hold half way to focus and line up the shot, and then press the full way to take a photo, like with mirror less cameras. Unnecessary, maybe, but I love that Sony phones have a dedicated shutter button, and having that on the iPhone would be spectacular.

It really feels like a renaissance for Apple. The Mac’s got ports back, the iPhone getting a customizable button, more rumored buttons. It’s like Apple is trying to give the consumer more, as oppose to minimal. Headphone jack anyone?

Will iOS 18 support Xs Max? I don’t want to be forced to upgrade phone. I need to run the latest iOS for app development, but my Xs Max still runs everything smoothly…

i'm not sure we will see a new ultra wide. i think it will just be upgraded to 48mp

I expect we will see a new main and new telephoto for the ultra.

6.9 inch is meh

Make that 7.9 inch at least and you’re talking.

The sooner we get to 12 inch iPhone screens the better.

We've reached the point where you need three hands to hold your phone
Some iPhones are actually really uncomfortable to hold for long periods. I appreciate them making them out of lighter materials such as titanium to mitigate the increased weight of larger models. But this trend for larger and larger phones seems to keep going and going. There is now no real premium offering on the smaller size offering. The current iPhone SE is real bad value for money.

See, I’m glad I didn’t upgrade. Nothing enrages me more while enjoying a new device than seeing rumors about a new one.
But this happens every year… because they update every year. If they could, I’m sure they would upgrade every 6 month. It’s all about the revenue… don’t let them fool you with their environmental spiel… yes some of them will believe in the environmental causes at Apple… but in the end $$ trump the environment, until it doesn’t. At that point, it’s too late.

Tim Apple: please bring up the technical specifications for iPhone 15 Pro

Employee: Sure thing, what are you thinking?

Tim Apple: increase screen dimensions by X %

Employee: ok

Tim Apple: you’re now looking at iPhone 16 Pro

I just got 6E 😲 and my internet provider dosebt offer faster to make wifi 7 needed. My wired network is 2.5G soo I’m good. When there are devices out there with wifi7 I’ll want it then. I’m 4-5 years off from needing better than 6E.
